Suicidal behaviour characteristics and factors associated with mortality in the hospital setting.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a major public health problem worldwide, and an approach is necessary due to its high potential for prevention. This paper examines the main characteristics of people admitted to hospitals in the Community of Madrid (Spain) with suicidal behaviour, and the factors associated with their hospital mortality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A study was conducted on patients with E950-E959 codes of suicide and self-inflicted injuries of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification, contained in any diagnostic field of the minimum basic data set

A 12-year National Study of Suicide by Jumping From Bridges in Norway.

Studies from several countries suggest that erecting fences on bridges more commonly used for suicide by jumping may be an effective way of reducing the risk of suicide by jumping from these bridges. Distribution of suicides by jumping off bridges has not yet been studied on a national level in any country. This study included all suicides by jumping from high places registered in the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry (COD) in the period 1999-2010 (n = 319). Combining data from the COD registry and information from police records, 71 cases of suicide by jumping off a bridge were identified inv

Suicides in Visually Impaired Persons: A Nation-Wide Register-Linked Study from Finland Based on Thirty Years of Data.

Focusing on seasonality, gender, age, and suicide methods a Finnish nation-wide cohort-based study was carried out to compare suicide data between sighted, visually-impaired (WHO impairment level I-II, i.e., visual acuity >0.05, but <0.3) and blind (WHO impairment level III-V, i.e., visual acuity <0.05) victims. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) of age- and gender-matched populations from official 1982-2011 national registers were used. Group differences in categorical variables were assessed with Pearson's Chi-square or Fisher's Exact test and in continuous variables with Mann-Whitney U-tes

Restricting access to a suicide hotspot does not shift the problem to another location. An experiment of two river bridges in Brisbane, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Restricting access to lethal means is a well-established strategy for suicide prevention. However, the hypothesis of subsequent method substitution remains difficult to verify. In the case of jumping from high places ('hotspots'), most studies have been unable to control for a potential shift in suicide locations. This investigation aims to evaluate the short- and long-term effect of safety barriers on Brisbane's Gateway Bridge and to examine whether there was substitution of suicide location. METHODS: Data on suicide by jumping - between 1990 and 2012, in Brisbane, Australia - we

Suicide in elderly South Tyroleans in various residential settings at the time of death: a psychological autopsy study.

BACKGROUND: Completed suicide is more frequent among older adults than any other age group. Data on suicide in nursing homes and other residential facilities are inconsistent. This work aims to describe the characteristics of elderly suicide victims in different residential settings compared to young suicide victims. METHODS: Data on people who died by suicide in the South Tyrol (Alto Adige) region of Italy between 2000 and 2009 were gathered from the local Provincial Mortality Register. Further detailed information was collected via questionnaires to mental health departments and psychologic

Emergency department admission and mortality rate for suicidal behavior. A follow-up study on attempted suicides referred to the ED between January 2004 and December 2010.

BACKGROUND: The international literature reports that for every completed suicide there are between 8 and 22 visits to an Emergency Department (ED) for attempted suicide/suicidal behavior. AIMS: To describe the characteristics of admission to emergency departments (EDs) for suicide-related presenting complaints in the metropolitan area of Bologna; to estimate the risk for all-cause mortality and for suicide; to identify the profiles of subjects most at risk. METHOD: Follow-up of patients admitted to the EDs of the metropolitan area of Bologna between January 2004 and December 2010 for attemp

High life in the sky? Mortality by floor of residence in Switzerland.

Living in high-rise buildings could influence the health of residents. Previous studies focused on structural features of high-rise buildings or characteristics of their neighbourhoods, ignoring differences within buildings in socio-economic position or health outcomes. We examined mortality by floor of residence in the Swiss National Cohort, a longitudinal study based on the linkage of December 2000 census with mortality and emigration records 2001-2008. Analyses were based on 1.5 million people living in buildings with four or more floors and 142,390 deaths recorded during 11.4 million perso

Suicides by jumping from a height in Hong Kong: a review of coroner court files.

PURPOSE: Jumping from a height is the most common method for suicide in Hong Kong and other urban cities, but it remains understudied locally and internationally. We used Coroner records in exploring the ecological factors associated with these deaths and the personal characteristics of persons who jumped to their death (hereafter, "jumping suicides"). We compared suicides by jumping with all other suicides and examined the suicides that occurred at ten different jumping sites. METHODS: The Coroner's files of all suicides in Hong Kong from 2002 to 2007 included 6,125 documented deaths. RESUL

Gender differences in methods of suicide attempts and prevalence of previous suicide attempts.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide attempts are important predictors of completed suicide. Adolescents admitted to the emergency room of a large university hospital in Bern after a suicide attempt during the years 2004-2010 were prospectively assessed for methods of suicide attempt. METHOD: Adolescents (N = 257; 66.5% female; age 14-21 years), presenting after a suicide attempt, were assessed with the WHO/EURO Multicentre Study on Parasuicide assessment tool. RESULTS: Males more often used jumping from a high place (14% vs. 4.6% in females, p < .05) and less often intoxication (36% vs. 71.3%, p < .01). At l

Characteristics of suicide attempts in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in comparison with depression: a study of emergency room visit cases in Japan.

We worked on characterizing suicide attempts in patients with schizophrenia in comparison with mood disorders. This study population comprised 260 patients with F2 disorders (ICD-10), i.e., "schizophrenic group" and 705 patients with F3 disorders, i.e., "depressive group" who presented at the psychiatric emergency department of our hospital for 8 years. They were compared in three age groups: young (≤24 years), middle-aged (25-44 years), and elderly (≥45 years). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified factors associated with the seriousness of the suicide attempt method. The schiz

Suicides in public places: findings from one English county.

Little is known about where suicides take place. We collected data from coroners' files on all suicides and undetermined deaths in one large English county from 2000 to 2004. The data show that >30% of suicides occurred in public places. A quarter of these involved jumping from a height and nearly a quarter involved car exhaust poisoning. Several sites were associated with multiple methods of suicide. Identifying and managing high-risk locations should be an important part of an overall suicide prevention strategy and is best tackled at local level.

Methods of suicide: international suicide patterns derived from the WHO mortality database.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate information about preferred suicide methods is important for devising strategies and programmes for suicide prevention. Our knowledge of the methods used and their variation across countries and world regions is still limited. The aim of this study was to provide the first comprehensive overview of international patterns of suicide methods. METHODS: Data encoded according to the International Classification of Diseases (10th revision) were derived from the WHO mortality database. The classification was used to differentiate suicide methods. Correspondence analysis was used

Intentional traumatic brain injury in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Violence and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are two major public health concerns. This violence-related TBI, however, has not been studied in Canada and there is little literature on a profile of risk factors and injury severity regarding TBI because of self-inflicted/suicidal and assault/homicidal injury compared with unintentional TBI. METHODS: Cross-sectional study using the comprehensive data set (CDS) of Ontario trauma registry (OTR) from 1993 to 2001. SETTING: Data from a large trauma registry were used to assess demographic and injury-related characteristics, injury severity

Suicide attempts by burning.

Setting oneself ablaze is an uncommon method of attempting suicide. Ten patients with deliberate thermal injuries had been evaluated by a consultation psychiatry service over a 15-year period. Schizophrenia and major depression were the more common diagnoses, and most patients had prior psychiatric histories. When compared to 1,864 people who attempted suicide by other means, the burn subjects were older, comprised a larger percentage of African Americans, and resembled those who had jumped from high places. Stresses encountered by recovering burn patients involved dependency, body image conce

Seasonal associations between weather conditions and suicide--evidence against a classic hypothesis.

Psychiatrists, epidemiologists, and sociologists have debated the existence of an association between weather conditions and suicide seasonality since the preliminary statistical investigations in the 19th century. Provided that the effect of weather conditions on suicide operates via a dose-response-like mechanism, time-series (Box-Jenkins) analysis permits an indirect test of the hypothesis that temperature or other weather variables promote higher suicide frequencies in late spring and early summer months. The authors modeled monthly data on suicide and climatic conditions (i.e., temperatur

Epidemic of suicide by hanging in Lithuania: does socio-demographic status matter?

OBJECTIVE: To analyse suicide by hanging, compared with other methods, by demographic and selected social factors in Lithuania, and to evaluate changes during 1993-1997, and 1998-2002. METHODS: Data on committed suicides were compiled from the Lithuanian Department of Statistics. Suicides were identified by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD): codes in ICD-9 E950-E959 and codes in ICD-10 X60-X84. These were categorized into seven groups by method of suicide. Particular attention was paid to suicide and self-inflicted injury by hanging, strangulation and suffocation (ICD-9: E953

[Bilateral axillary brachial plexus block guided by multiple nerve stimulation and ultrasound in a multiple trauma patient].

We present the case of a woman with multiple wounds and injuries after attempted suicide by jumping from a high place. She had multiple craniofacial injuries and fractures of both forearms requiring emergency osteosynthesis. The neurosurgeons requested that a level of consciousness be maintained for frequent assessment; therefore it was decided to provide a bilateral axillary brachial plexus block. The procedure was carried out with the aid of a nerve stimulator to locate a triple response in the left arm (radial, medial and musculocutaneous nerves) and with both ultrasound and double nerve st

Suicide mortality in Southern Italy: 1998-2002.

The purpose of the study was to describe the deaths by suicides that occurred in an area of Southern Italy in the period 1998-2002. Data were obtained from death records, and population estimates for each year were provided by the National Institute of Statistics. A total of 367 suicides were retrieved. The number of suicides was stable for the 5 years recorded, with the highest value for 1998, ranging from 1.4% for ages 0 to 14 to 25.1% for ages 25 to 44 years. Age-specific rates of suicide showed that the highest rates were in those 75 to 84 years old. Rates are always higher in males, with
