It is not currently understood whether the COVID-19 pandemic led to a lengthy period of elevated mortality rates or whether rates have returned to prepandemic trends. Adolescents with severe suicide attempts requiring intensive care represent a major public health challenge, with high morbidity and resource utilization. This retrospective study reviewed all cases of young people aged 10 to 18 years admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit between 2014 and 2024 following a suicide attempt. METHOD: Peer-reviewed papers reporting suicides among the medically and surgically admitted patients of general hospitals were located by searches of MEDLINE, PsycINFO and EMBASE between 1946 and 2025.
