OBJECTIVES: We have described national trends for the 5 leading external causes of injury mortality.
METHODS: We used negative binomial regression and annual underlying cause-of-death data for US residents for 2000 through 2009.
RESULTS: Mortality rates for unintentional poisoning, unintentional falls, and suicide increased by 128%, 71%, and 15%, respectively. The unintentional motor vehicle traffic crash mortality rate declined 25%. Suicide ranked first as a cause of injury mortality, followed by motor vehicle traffic crashes, poisoning, falls, and homicide. Females had a lower injury morta

BACKGROUND: The International Collaborative Effort (ICE) on Injury Statistics called for an effort 'to reach consensus on what are the 10 most important indicators of injury incidence that offer the potential for international comparisons and for regional or global monitoring.'
OBJECTIVES: To describe the process of developing the ICE indicators and to present the specifications of selected injury mortality indicators, along with comparisons between selected countries for those specified indicators.
METHODS: Participants on the ICE list had been asked to send to one of the authors what they

Many authors have suggested that some road traffic crashes are disguised suicide attempts. A case report and literature review is used to explore this claim and to examine the frequency and risk factors associated with driver suicide. The author concludes the methodological difficulty of establishing the driver's intent of suicide accounts for an under-estimation of the frequency of this event and that many cases of driver suicide go unrecognised. Familiarity with the risk factors associated with driver suicide may assist in the identification of cases of failed driver suicide and referral to

In a 7-year period (April 1, 2003-March 31, 2010), all medico-legal childhood deaths aged 0-18 years investigated by the Lancaster County Coroner's Office under the auspices of Nebraska Institute of Forensic Sciences, Inc. (NIFS), were retrospectively reviewed (n = 140). This number of cases represents 10.9% of the 1287 forensic autopsies performed during the same period. Age, race, gender, cause and manner of deaths were analyzed for all victims categorized into five age groups: 0-1 year, 1-4 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years, and 15-18 years. Male victims predominated with 98 cases (70%) versus

BACKGROUND: Combat fatalities are reported by the media as a frequent cause of military deaths, yet they may not reflect the most common and preventable ways that soldiers die.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to quantify the leading causes of death in the military and to identify modifiable behaviors that potentially contributed to death.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of all Canadian Forces members who died during the past quarter century (January 1, 1983, to December 31, 2007) and included autopsy reports, death certificates, coroner reports, hospital records, milita

OBJECTIVE: This study had its genesis in a personally observed collision between a motor vehicle and a motorized wheelchair (electric mobility device) on a busy street in the middle of the block at an unmarked crossing. To the observer, at the time, this appeared to be a suicidal act. This investigation was initiated to both delineate the number of these crashes nationally and understand this phenomena as a potentially planned act of self-destruction.
DESIGN: An initial survey of police reports was immediately frustrated by an inability to separate motor vehicle and electric mobility device c

Following the urgings of many advocates, an IOM report in 1999 called for a national data system on violent death, modeled after that existing for motor-vehicle crashes. The National Violent Death Reporting System now provides rich data on the circumstances of violent deaths in the U.S.; it is the first national system to collect in-depth information on suicides. In November 2008, the system went online (www.cdc.gov/ncipc/wisqars/), making data from 17 states available to researchers and the general public. The successful development of this system was the result of a 10-year effort begun with

BACKGROUND: Some motor vehicle crashes, particularly single-vehicle crashes, may result from intentional self-harm. We conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the risk that intentional self-harm poses for motor vehicle crashes among young drivers.
METHODS: We prospectively linked survey data from newly licensed drivers aged 17-24 years to data on licensing attempts and police-reported motor vehicle crashes during the follow-up period. We investigated the role of recent engagement in self-harm on the risk of a crash. We took into account potential confounders, including number of hours

The 2008 annual report of the Regional Infant and Child Mortality Review Committee (RICMRC) is presented. This committee has as its mission the review of infant and child deaths so that information can be transformed into action to protect young lives. The 2008 review area includes South Dakota's Minnehaha, Turner, Lincoln, Moody, Lake, McCook, Union, Hansen, Miner and Brookings counties. Within our region in 2008, there were six infant deaths labeled as Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID), of which two met the criteria for the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The four non-SIDS SUID dea

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the burden or causes of injury in rural villages in India.
OBJECTIVE: To examine injury-related mortality and morbidity in villages in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India.
METHODS: A verbal-autopsy-based mortality surveillance study was used to collect mortality data on all ages from residents in 45 villages in 2003-2004. In early 2005, a morbidity survey in adults was carried out using stratified random sampling in 20 villages. Participants were asked about injuries sustained in the preceding 12 months. Both fatal and non-fatal injuries were coded using clas

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the classical trimodal distribution of trauma deaths is still applicable in a contemporary urban New Zealand trauma system.
METHODS: All trauma deaths in the greater Auckland region between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2004 were identified and reviewed. Data was obtained from hospital trauma registries, coroner autopsy reports and police reports.
RESULTS: There were 186 trauma deaths. The median age was 28.5 years and the median Injury Severity Score was 25. The predominant mechanisms of injury were hanging (36%), motor vehicle crashes (31.7%), falls (9.7%),

BACKGROUND: To identify the leading causes of injury- and violence-related deaths in demographic subgroups of the population in Ohio, by Medicaid status.
METHODS: We used linked Ohio Medicaid and death certificate files, 1992 to 1998, and obtained the probability (p) of dying from a specific mechanism of injury--given death from injury--by Medicaid status, using multinomial multivariable logistic regression analysis. Probabilities were rank-ordered to identify the leading causes of death in each subgroup.
RESULTS: The leading cause of injury-related deaths was homicide among Medicaid deceden

The present study assessed newspaper reports of injuries affecting individuals with Spanish surnames and compared newspaper reports to hospital injury discharge data in two counties in Colorado. Newspaper reports came from 12 daily and weekly newspapers. Hospital discharge data were obtained from the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment. Motor vehicle crashes, assault and legal intervention, and suicide and suicidal acts were counted. A higher proportion of people with Spanish surnames were reported in newspapers than expected based on the hospital discharge data. Motor veh

Although most clinical guidelines for older adults allow for one drink a day in persons without a history of alcoholism, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease, alcohol may contribute to fatal injury in the elderly. Using two national surveys, this case-control study determined the associations between drinking history and fatal injuries from falls, motor vehicle crashes and suicides. We performed a case-control study using 1,735 cases who died of falls, motor vehicle crashes, or suicides selected from the 1993 National Mortality Follow-Back Survey; controls (n=13,381) were a representative sampl
