OBJECTIVES: Assess injury death relative risks (RR), dose-response, and attributable fractions for current cigarette smokers (smokers) in a recent representative sample of the United States population without and with adjustment for (a) demographic and (b) additional behavioral risk factors.
SETTING: United States.
METHODS: National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) adult (ages 18+ years) interviewees from 1990 or 1991 were followed through 1995. Referents had never smoked a total of 100 cigarettes. Relative risks were estimated with Stata software's Cox proportional hazard regressions, using N

AIMS: Our aim was to determine the significance in Maori of injury in relation to other health problems, to describe the leading causes of injury, and to determine age specific rates for major classes of injury.
METHODS: We used New Zealand Health Information Services mortality data files. The New Zealand Census classification of 'Sole-Maori' was used to determine injury mortality rates.
RESULTS: For more than three contiguous decades of life (1-34 yrs) injuries were the leading cause of death. For all age groups combined, unintentional injury accounted for 75% of injury deaths, suicide 17%,

It was found that almost one-half of all Interior Alaska rural fatalities from thirty-six villages are due to unintentional and intentional injury. Drowning, motor vehicle crashes, hypothermia, fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and air transport crashes accounted for over 32% of all deaths; suicide and homicide account for over 15%. Many of these deaths are preventable.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze trends in overall and cause specific mortality in young people from 15 to 34 years-old residing in the city of Barcelona (Spain) from 1983 to 1993.
METHODS: Data were obtained from death certificates. The overall deaths as well as deaths due to motor vehicle accidents, suicide, AIDS and drug overdose were studied. Annual crude and standardized rates were calculated (direct method) by sex and cause of death. Simple lineal regression analysis was performed to model time trends.
RESULTS: Global mortality rates increased from 65.7 per 100,000 inha

OBJECTIVES: New Zealand (NZ) has an unenviable track record in childhood injury mortality. We sought to describe this burden and to compare it with the United States of America (USA), with a view to taking the first step in identifying potential areas in which NZ might benefit from injury control as practiced in the USA.
METHODS: We identified all children and teenagers who had died of injury for the period 1984-93 from the NZ Health Information Service mortality data files. We compared their rates of injury with previously published rates for USA.
RESULTS: The age specific rates follow a J

To investigate the correlation between the mechanism of an accident and the resulting injury pattern we reviewed the data of 195 prospectively documented multiply traumatized patients. Information on the accident was based on descriptions given by eye witnesses, police and the emergency medical staff. Only moderate to severe lesions (AIS > or = 3; Abbreviated Injury Scale Version 1990) of each body region were analyzed. The mean injury severity (ISS) for all these patients was 39.5 (18-75); the lethality was 34%. Different types of accidents led to various injury patterns. We found a high inci

OBJECTIVES: We attempted to document the role of homicide and other injuries as causes of maternal death and to compare the risk of fatal injury among pregnant women with that in the general population.
STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed New York City medical examiner records of 2331 women aged 15 to 44 years who died of injury in 1987 through 1991. Pregnancies were identified from autopsy information.
RESULTS: A total of 115 (39%) of 293 deaths in currently or recently pregnant women were attributable to injury. These 115 deaths included homicide (63%), suicide (13%), motor vehicle crashes (12%), an

We conducted a case-control study to determine whether adolescents and young adults who have been in a motor vehicle crash or hospitalized for unintentional and intentional injury are at greater risk for suicide. Cases were 700 Washington State residents age 16-35 with a driver's license who died of suicide during 1987-1989. Controls were 3,494 licensed drivers matched by age, sex, and zip code. Using two different databases, we were able to determine the past incidence of in-state injury hospitalizations and motor vehicle crashes for all subjects. Overall, the incidence of suicide was tenfold

In 1990, firearm-related injuries surpassed motor-vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death from injuries in both Louisiana and Texas, and from 1979 through 1987, these states ranked third and fifth, respectively, for age-adjusted firearm-related death rates. Because firearm-related injuries are a major cause of death in Louisiana and Texas, the Louisiana Disability Prevention Program, Louisiana Office of Public Health, and the Injury Control Program, Epidemiology Division, Texas Department of Health, used death certificates to examine patterns in firearm-related mortality. This report sum

This study documents the strong association of alcohol in trauma-related deaths. In a previous study alcohol was present in 62.8% of homicide victims, 48.6% of unintentional injury fatality victims, 35.3% of persons who committed suicide, and 14.4% of persons who died of natural causes. The present study uses the legal limit of 100 mg/100 mL to include patients as having an alcohol-associated trauma death. In addition the study includes patients who die up to 20 hours after injury. These features of our study result in the lower reported frequency rates. Our study confirms that alcohol is stro

BACKGROUND: The importance of injury as a public health problem is not well recognized in many developing countries. Data have recently become available on injury mortality in China.
METHOD: We compared Chinese injury data based on a 100 million population segment for 1986 with data for the United States.
RESULTS: The age-adjusted death rate from all injuries for China exceeds the rate for the US (69.0 vs 61.3 per 100,000). The US has higher death rates from motor vehicle crashes, fires, and homicide; China has greater mortality from drowning, poisoning, falls, and suicide. Especially notewo

We reviewed the available data on firearm-related injuries in Canada to suggest strategies for prevention in the context of the proposed amendments to the Criminal Code (Bill C-17) currently before Parliament. The risk of death from a firearm in Canada is equivalent to the risk of death from a motor vehicle crash. We discuss the risks associated with firearms with regard to suicides, homicides and "accidents." We also discuss the accessibility of firearms. This article builds upon a recently published update on the epidemiologic basis of the public health approach for the prevention of firearm

The literature has often suggested a relationship between psychiatric illness and increased risk for motor vehicle accidents but few data exist, particularly those from prospective or case-controlled studies. The present study examined detailed accident and injury data from a large series (N = 1778) of motor vehicle crashes that included persons with diagnoses of psychiatric illnesses (n = 17); matched controls were also studied. As expected, drivers with psychiatric diagnoses used psychotropic medications more frequently than did controls. Drivers with psychiatric diagnoses did not have more

An overview of the injury problem in New Zealand is presented. National mortality and morbidity data demonstrate that relative to other diseases injuries represent a significant community health problem. Injuries are the fourth leading cause of death and account for 32% of Potential Years of Life Lost between the ages of 1 and 70. Injuries are the second leading cause of hospital admission and account for nearly 12% of all admissions. Injury rates vary dramatically by age, sex, socioeconomic status, and race. In general, males, particularly those 20-24 years old, have higher death and hospital

Although alcohol use has been established as a risk factor for injuries associated with motor vehicle crashes, the role of alcohol for other unintentional and intentional injuries is less defined. A review of 102,401 deaths investigated by North Carolina medical examiners in the period 1973-1983 characterized the temporal patterns of ethyl alcohol in unintentional injury fatalities, suicides, homicides, and persons who died of natural or unknown causes. Victims of homicides (85.9%) and suicides (77.7%) were tested for alcohol more frequently than were fatalities resulting from unintentional in

US mortality data on motor vehicle crashes, falls, suicide, and homicide for 1980 are compared with corresponding data for France, Japan, West Germany, and the United Kingdom. Unadjusted and age-specific death rates are presented, together with age-adjusted rates of years of life lost (YLL). A large male excess in rates is typical outside the fall category. Motor vehicle crashes are the predominant cause of YLL, and the United States manifests the highest YLL rates for each sex. US fall death rates at the older ages are exceeded by those of France and West Germany. The elderly generally manife
