A systematic review of clinical practice guidelines for suicide and self-harm prevention in adults.

Clinical practice guidelines are used to guide clinical decision making but are rarely formally evaluated. As high-quality evidence for suicide prevention is scarce, partly due to limited understanding of underlying causes and low baseline rates, CPGs are important for guiding care in this area. This systematic review focused on clinical practice guidelines for the assessment, management and treatment of adults with self-harm, with or without suicidal intent. We searched 14 medical databases and repositories for guidelines to identify eligible documents published between Jan 1, 2000, and Jan 1

Global, regional, and national burden of suicide, 1990-2021: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Deaths from suicide are a tragic yet preventable cause of mortality. Quantifying the burden of suicide to understand its geographical distribution, temporal trends, and variation by age and sex is an essential step in suicide prevention. We aimed to present a comprehensive set of global, regional, and national estimates of suicide burden. METHODS: We produced estimates of the number of deaths and age-standardised mortality rates of suicide globally, regionally, and for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021, and disaggregated these results by age and sex. The Global Burde

Global public concern of childhood and adolescence suicide: a new perspective and new strategies for suicide prevention in the post-pandemic era.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people worldwide and is responsible for about 52,000 deaths annually in children and adolescents aged 5-19 years. Familial, social, psychological, and behavioral factors play important roles in suicide risk. As traumatic events such as the COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to suicidal behaviors in young people, there is a need to understand the current status of suicide in adolescents, including its epidemiology, associated factors, the influence of the pandemic, and management initiatives. DATA SOURCES: We investigated global a

Association of mental disorders with firearm suicides: A systematic review with meta-analyses of observational studies in the United States.

In the United States (US), 61% of all suicide cases may involve firearms, and some evidence suggests that mental disorders may play a role in suicide by firearm. We performed the first systematic review and meta-analyses to investigate: (i) whether mental disorders are associated with suicide by firearm, and (ii) whether the risk of using a firearm compared with alternative means is associated with higher levels of suicide in individuals with a mental disorder METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched twelve databases from inception to the 24th of May 2020. We retrieved 22 observational studies conduc

'Lock to Live': development of a firearm storage decision aid to enhance lethal means counselling and prevent suicide.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to (1) clarify decision needs among suicidal adults with home firearm access; (2) identify accurate, unbiased and acceptable approaches for content and messaging; and (3) develop a tablet-delivered decision aid for firearm storage options. METHODS: Following international standards, we used stakeholder interviews to develop a decision aid for the decision, 'what option(s) to choose to reduce home access to firearms for an adult at risk of suicide'. Participants were adults with personal or family history of suicidal ideation or behaviours, firearm ownership or employment

Issues in Developing a Surveillance Case Definition for Nonfatal Suicide Attempt and Intentional Self-harm Using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) Coded Data.

Suicide and intentional self-harm are among the leading causes of death in the United States. To study this public health issue, epidemiologists and researchers often analyze data coded using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Prior to October 1, 2015, health care organizations and providers used the clinical modification of the Ninth Revision of ICD (ICD-9-CM) to report medical information in electronic claims data. The transition in October 2015 to use of the clinical modification of the Tenth Revision of ICD (ICD-10-CM) resulted in the need to update methods and selection c

[Refractory sufferings at the end of life: Which considerations, which propositions?].

Refractory suffering of terminally ill people may be physical (pain, dyspnea, vomiting...) or existential (spiritual sufferings, anxiousness...). End-of-life decisions are often around ethics. Decision making near the end of life consists in witholding and withdrawing life-support treatment and prescribing both of treatments with risk of double effect and sedation for distress. In France, such decisions are defined by the deontology code and by the law of April 22nd, 2005 concerning the end of life and patients' rights. Recommendations from medical societies specify the means of implementation

[Perception of social rank and submissive behavior in eating disorders].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to study the social behavior in patients with eating disorders, in particular the presence of low social ranking and high submissive behavior. We also considered the relationship between these factors and the presence of some personality traits and pathological eating behaviors. METHOD: We performed a case-control study on 249 young women (124 controls and 125 eating disorders subjects). Eating disorders were diagnosed as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorders non otherwise specified. The patients underwent a routine assessment by means of a

Prototypes and personal templates: collective wisdom and individual differences.

This article concerns individual differences in the associative meaning of psychological concepts. Associative meaning may be assessed with prototype methodology, which yields a list of features of the concept ordered according to their rated importance. Our theory concerns individual differences in a concept's associative meaning: A personal template reveals a person's idiosyncratic associative meaning. It is possible to assess the degree to which a personal template matches the corresponding prototype. The theory distinguishes among three types of concepts. One type, for example, specifies a

Bipolar disorder not otherwise specified in relation to the bipolar spectrum.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics of patients who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder not otherwise specified (BPD NOS) and who are considered to represent part of the bipolar spectrum. The lifetime prevalence of BPD in the general population may be as high as 6% when the full spectrum of bipolar disorders is accounted for. Correct identification of true bipolar patients in clinical settings may result in more appropriate treatment. Our hypothesis was that patients with BPD NOS would be more similar to other bipolar patients than major depressi

[Suicide in the elderly at home and in retirement homes in France].

BACKGROUND: Suicide in the elderly attracts less attention that in the young. However it is more frequent among the former. The retirement home receives the populations most isolated from their families and those most vulnerable from a psychological and physical point of view. The aim of this research is to provide information concerning suicide in the elderly in France, to specify the means employed and to compare suicide rates at home and in retirement homes METHODS: The statistics utilized are those of population size (censuses) and medical causes of death. With these latter causes a relat

War zone traumas and posttraumatic stress disorder symptomatology.

The diagnosis and clinical understanding of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rests upon the explicit identification of traumatic experiences that give rise to a well-defined constellation of symptoms. Most efforts to investigate the characteristics of these experiences have attempted to specify war zone stressors as objectively as possible. In this study, we add specification of the psychological meaning of war zone stressors to their objective specification. Eleven traumas are organized in terms of four roles that veterans played in the initiation of death and injury; namely, target, obse

Childhood depression and suicide.

Recent years have witnessed accumulating evidence that the disorders subsumed under the heading of childhood depression are much more prevalent than used to be believed; that these conditions in prepubertal youngsters are more similar to those disorders occurring in adolescents and adults than was previously believed; that childhood depression can co-exist with many other childhood conditions; and that, although a rare occurrence, suicide is committed by older children. To quote a professional in the child mental health field: It is difficult to see how depression could not be involved in almo

Mental disorder in youth suicide. DSM-III-R Axes I and II.

A 3-year urban material of suicides in adolescents and young adults (age 15-29 years) was studied retrospectively by means of interviews with survivors (n = 58). Classification of mental disorders according to DSM-III-R showed that major depression was important as background to suicides in 41%, primary (22%) or secondary (19%) to other disorders. Adding major depression, depressive disorder, not otherwise specified, dysthymia and adjustment disorder with depressed mood gave a total of 64% depressive syndromes. Schizophrenia (14%) and borderline personality disorder (28%) constituted other rel
