In a survey the definition of the notions insufficiency of the bone marrow, panmyelopathy, panmyelophthisis and aplastic anaemia, the subdivision into congenital and acquired forms as well as to the clinical course, the epidemiologic situation as well as the distribution according to age and sex are described. More in detail the author enters the etiological factors, in which cases the etiological classification of the individual case may be connected with considerable difficulties. Exogenic noxae are subdivided into factors dependent on dose and independent on dose as pathogenetic principles.

Afferent discharges of 64 single units were recorded from the left cardiac sympathetic nerve of anesthetized cats. The influence of various toxic substances and of drugs with ototoxic side effects upon energy generation, energy utilization, and membrane processes of the cochlea were studied. None of the drugs tested interfered with energy generation to as great an extent as did anoxia or cyanide and 2,4-dinitrophenol. 26 men, aged 22-57, with various length of employment in xanthate plant, where they have been exposed to CS2, were subjected to laboratory examinations aiming to find out the effects of this substance on their health state. These studies had been produced by measurements of CS2 concentration in the air of work-posts, lasting for 7 months. The causes of death among the dock-yard workers of Genoa from December 31, 1959 to January 1, 1970, have been investigated. Optimal conditions for the use of 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) and dithiothreitol (DTT) in the inactivation of IgM red cell antibodies were investigated. 0.2 M 2-ME was better than 0.01 M DTT; higher concentrations of these 2 substances could not conveniently be used because of gel formation. A correlation was made between the effects of synthetic substance P (ssP) on spinal dorsal horn neurones and the responses of these neurones to natural peripheral stimulation. The chemical analysis of biological material ("biological monitoring") gains increasing importance in the occupational medical supervision of persons exposed to noxious substances. Blood and urine are primarily used as samples. In addition to direct analysis of the noxa or its metabolites, even specific biochemical parameters and relatively unspecific clinico-chemical and hematological parameters may be used as analytical components. The advantages and disadvantages of "biological monitoring" are discussed.
