Adhesive tapes are frequently encountered as trace evidence in a wide range of criminal investigations, including homicides, kidnappings, sexual assaults, and bombings. Their potential to establish links between crime scenes, suspects, and victims makes them valuable forensic materials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of current methodologies employed in the forensic examination of adhesive tapes. Emphasis is placed on recent advancements in physical fit analysis and a variety of analytical techniques, including spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, and elemental methods, used to ch

Exposure of cell membranes to reactive oxygen species can cause oxidation of membrane lipids. Oxidized lipids undergo drastic conformational changes, compromising the mechanical integrity of the membrane and causing cell death. For giant unilamellar vesicles, a classic cell mimetic system, a range of mechanical responses under oxidative assault has been observed including formation of nanopores, transient micron-sized pores, and total sudden catastrophic collapse (i.e., explosion). However, the physical mechanism regarding how lipid oxidation causes vesicles to explode remains elusive. Here, w

AIMS: The number of patients suffering maxillofacial trauma remains constant although the affected patients become older. The aim of this study was to illuminate the patterns of maxillofacial fractures in a University Medical Centre and to analyse potential changes in patient population and treatment methods during a 5-year period.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, the records of 573 patients with maxillofacial fractures treated in a level one trauma centre from January 2010 to December 2014 were analysed with regard to gender, age, date and time of hospitalization as well a

INTRODUCTION: Gender estimation from dismembered human body parts and skeletal remains in cases of mass disasters, explosions, and assaults cases is an imperative element of any medico-legal investigations and has been a major challenge for forensic scientists.
AIM: The aim of the present study was to estimate the gender by using index and ring finger length ratio, hand and foot index along with the correlation of both the hand and foot index to determine the vital role of all the indices in establishing gender identity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done on

Inhibitors of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification often present a challenge in forensic investigations of e.g., terrorism, missing persons, sexual assaults and other criminal cases. Such inhibitors may be counteracted by dilution of the DNA extract, using different additives, and selecting an inhibitory resistant DNA polymerase. Additionally, DNA in forensic samples is often present in limited amounts and degraded, requiring special analyses of short nuclear targets or mitochondrial DNA. The present study evaluated the enzymes AmpliTaq Gold, HotStarTaq Plus, KAPA3G Plant, and KAPA2G

OBJECT Nonpowder guns, defined as spring- or gas-powered BB or pellet guns, can be dangerous weapons that are often marketed to children. In recent decades, advances in compressed-gas technology have led to a significant increase in the power and muzzle velocity of these weapons. The risk of intracranial injury in children due to nonpowder weapons is poorly documented. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted at 3 institutions studying children 16 years or younger who had intracranial injuries secondary to nonpowder guns. RESULTS The authors reviewed 14 cases of intracranial injury in chil

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Expanding violence may necessitate treatment of explosion victims, requiring a broadening of existing medical skills and knowlegde of injury mechanisms. The aim of the study was to assess the number, nature and injury pattern of fatal explosion incidents in Finland.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of explosion-related deaths from January 1985 to December 2004. Death certificates were obtained and reviewed.
RESULTS: Over the 20-year period from 1985 to 2004, only 61 inviduals died in Finland as a result of unintentional or unspecified explosion related events

In spite of strict safety regulations concerning firearm shooting, several hundred conscripts still suffer acute acoustical trauma (AAT) in the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) every year, resulting in symptoms such as tinnitus and/or hearing impairment. The causes leading to AAT, causative weapons and mode and level of hearing protection were analysed to find out why so many AATs still occur in the FDF. The material consisted of 119 patients of the total 163 AAT patients treated at the Central Military Hospital during the year 2000. In 87.5% of cases, the AATs occurred in unprotected ears. The mo
