Comparison between operative management versus non-operative management in patients with solid organ blunt abdominal injury in the National Trauma Registry of Iran.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Severe abdominal injuries cause one-fifth of injury mortality. Non-operative management (NOM) or operative management (OM) is a primary challenge in abdominal injuries. In this study, we aimed to compare NOM and OM outcomes in patients with solid organ blunt abdominal injuries in the National Trauma Registry of Iran (NTRI). METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted with data from the NTRI from 24 July 2016 to 21 May 2023. All patients with a solid organ abdominal injury by road traffic crash, falls, hit or bodily force

Penetrating Head Injury With a Motor Bike Key.

Traumatic head injuries can be penetrating and non-penetrating. Penetrating head injuries are usually caused by low to high velocity, either with sharp or blunt objects. Penetrating objects may include knives, nails, forks, scissors, pencils, and even keys. Patients with penetrating brain injuries are mostly involved in road traffic accidents, assault injuries, accidental injuries, or even suicide attempts. This case report focuses on an accidental penetrating brain injury due to a bike key to a 21-year-old male near the left orbital wall. The patient underwent left lateral wall orbitotomy wit

Energies of different assault tools in blunt force trauma.

Due to the inherent ubiquity of objects capable of inflicting blunt force trauma, such injuries are a frequent occurrence in forensic investigations of violent crimes. While the injury patterns and medical consequences resulting from blunt force trauma have already been extensively researched, the forces or energies that act during impact are still largely unexplored. This study aims to determine the impact energies and moments of inertia (MOI) of various everyday items recently used as assault weapons. Five different tools but with similar MOI's were examined, namely a crutch, a vacuum cleane

Fasttrack intubation with the head rotated 30° following a cervical stab wound. A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Airway management in patient with cervical trauma is often challenging, especially when it involves intubation. CASE PRESENTATION: An uncommon case of posterolateral blunt traumatic cervical spine injury was seen in our emergency department following an assault on a 19-year-old young man. The only point of impact was cervical, the initial examination found a GCS = 15/15, no motor or sensory deficit. The head was slightly rotated 30° to the left, the patient was hemodynamically and respiratorily stable, he was fasting. The patient was directly transported to the ne

Prehospital Assaults Against Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders During COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-Asian sentiment increased when the SARS-CoV-2 virus reached the United States in 2020. Trends in national assaults occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community were evaluated. METHODS: Patients treated for assaults by emergency medical services between January 2019 and December 2021 were extracted from ImageTrend Collaborate, a national database. Multivariable logistic regression models, adjusting for age, sex, and urbanicity, were used to compare assault rates overall and in the AANHPI population. R

Mechanisms and weapons in physical elder abuse injuries: Findings from legally adjudicated cases.

INTRODUCTION: Elder abuse is common, but many characteristics have not been well-described, including injury mechanisms and weapons in physical abuse. Better understanding of these may improve identification of elder abuse among purportedly unintentional injuries. Our goal was to describe mechanisms of injury and weapons used and their relation to injury patterns. METHODS: We partnered with District Attorney's offices in 3 counties and systematically examined medical, police, and legal records from 164 successfully prosecuted physical abuse cases of victims aged ≥60 from 2001 to 2014. Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and injuries due to external causes according to intentions and mechanisms.

Although injuries are a leading cause of death and affect the life expectancy of individuals who live with disabilities globally, the potential role of air pollution exposure on injuries due to external causes has received little scientific attention, especially compared with that given to the association of air pollution and non-external causes of morbidity and mortality. We investigated the association between emergency department visits for externally caused injuries and short-term exposure to major ambient air pollutants, with focus on the intentions and mechanisms of injuries. We identifi

Does attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder increase the risk of minor blunt head trauma in children?

PROBLEM: It is unclear if attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) increases the risk of head trauma in children. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter prospective observational study of children with minor blunt head trauma. Guardians were queried, and medical records were reviewed as to whether the patient had previously been diagnosed with ADHD. Enrolled patients were categorized based on their mechanism of injury, with a comparison of those with motor vehicle collision (MVC) versus non-MVC mechanisms. FINDINGS: A total of 3410 (84%) enrolled children had ADHD status available, and 2

Accidental Penetrating Thoracic Injury with a Screwdriver in a Child: A Case Report.

Accidental penetrating injuries are common among children, either with a sharp or a blunt object. The screwdriver is an uncommon weapon; therefore, injuries caused by it represent an even rarer subset. Inadvertent injuries in the chest with a screwdriver as a stabbing weapon are extremely unusual. Penetrating chest injuries can be fatal if they cause wounds in the cardiac chambers or major thoracic vessels. We describe a 9-year-old child with an unintentional penetrating thoracic injury caused by a screwdriver. An explorative left anterior thoracotomy showed that the tip of the implanted screw
