In-patient outcomes after trauma in a rapidly developing nation.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid economic growth may impact trauma mortality. We investigated the epidemiology, risk factors and trends in hospital mortality of admitted trauma patients in Guyana during a 5-year period of rapid economic growth in this country. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Guyana's largest tertiary healthcare facility. The medical records of all patients admitted following trauma between 2018 and 2022 were reviewed. Patient demographics, injury characteristics, and clinical outcomes (mortality and length of stay) were obtained

The epidemiology of firearm-related injuries in the united states compared to other mechanisms: Recent trends in trauma center hospital discharges.

INTRODUCTION: To help address the continuing epidemic of firearm-related trauma in the United States (US), we conducted a detailed analysis of recent trauma center discharge data and compared firearm-related injuries to mechanisms such as falls, pedestrian injuries, and motor vehicle crashes. METHODS: We combined Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) data for 2011 to 2022 and analyzed variables for patient demographics, injury mechanisms, disposition, and hospital characteristics over time. Analyses consisted of descriptive statistics, bar plots, time series plots, and comparative tables.

Geo-Mapping Using In-Hospital Massive Transfusion Data as a Method for Prehospital Blood Management for Trauma Patients.

BACKGROUND: Prehospital whole blood (PHWB) transfusion improves outcomes in trauma patients, but blood products are a scarce and costly resource. We hypothesized that massive transfusion protocol (MTP) activation could be an indicator for trauma patients who might benefit from PHWB, and we used geo-mapping to identify high need zones. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively analyzed trauma registry data from 5 trauma centers in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska, including all patients who had MTP activated in the trauma bay from June 1, 2019, to March 31, 2025. Assault and motor vehicle crash data were co

Productivity losses from non-fatal traumatic brain injuries in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Non-fatal traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are commonly caused by falls, motor vehicle crashes and assaults, affecting millions of Americans each year. Yet there is limited information on the costs that non-fatal TBIs impose on affected individuals, families, employers and communities. This study used new data opportunities in a nationally representative survey to estimate annual productivity losses due to non-fatal TBI among US adults. METHODS: In 2025, authors combined survey response data from the 2023 National Health Interview Survey with supplementary information from previous

Injury across the lifespan: Comparing pediatric and adult injury patterns in the home and the community.

INTRODUCTION: Comparative data describing patterns of injury occurring in the home and in the community across ages are limited yet may guide family- and community-based interventions. We sought to assess potential differences in patient characteristics, injury mechanisms, and outcomes, as well as between injuries occurring at home compared to those in the community across all ages. METHODS: Patients from a level I pediatric and level I adult trauma center who resided and were injured in a single metropolitan county from 2016 - 2022 were included. Demographics, mechanism of injury, and outcom

Characteristics of severe injuries among children and adolescents in a sub-national trauma registry in Saudi Arabia.

INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents constitute nearly 30% of the global population, and injuries within this age group represent a significant public health concern worldwide. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted across five hospitals within the MNG-HA. The Trauma Registry database extracted all pediatric patients with injuries from 2015 to 2022 who were admitted for at least 1 day to MNG-HA hospitals. The outcome was severe injuries, defined as an Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥16, and the characteristics of the patients included various demographic, health, and injury-related fac

Just a head knock? Emergency physicians need to get serious about concussion.

Attention and awareness regarding concussion injury in Australia have significantly increased in the last decade. Although most of this increase is because of discussion regarding concussions from sporting endeavours, the majority of concussions are from non-sport environments including motor vehicle crashes, workplace incidents, falls, accidents, assault and intimate partner violence. In all cases, hospital EDs are the first point of contact, yet as argued in our Opinion here, there are concerns regarding the consistency of care protocols, because of a number of reasons, as well as management

Application of Nerve Blocks in Upper and Lower Extremity Trauma Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department of a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background Pain related to trauma is often severe and undergoes undertreated in many patients. Peripheral nerve blocks provide analgesia, which is site-specific and devoid of any systemic adverse effects. Regional anesthesia may also confer several other advantages including decreased length of stay in the emergency department and improved comfort and safety for emergency procedures compared to conventional analgesia. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of the application of nerve blocks in upper and lower extremity trauma patients presenting to the Emergency Department of a tertiary c

Bilateral mandible fractures in the paediatric patient in a case of peer-to-peer violence: a case report and literature review.

Mandible fractures are relatively uncommon despite the mandible being the most commonly fractured facial bone in the paediatric population. The aetiology of mandible fractures can be categorized as intentional (e.g. as a result of assault, peer-to-peer violence, family violence) or non-intentional (e.g. as a result of falls, motor vehicle crashes, sporting incidents). Peer-to-peer violence affects up to a third of male school aged children in Australia. This case report details the case of a paediatric patient with bilateral mandibular fractures who presented to a general dental practice after

Increase in trauma volume as compared to emergency department volume during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: During the months between April through June 2020 when we experienced the largest number of COVID-19 patients in our hospital, the volume of patients in the Emergency Department (ED) was decreased by more than 30%. In contrast to most early reports we did not notice a decrease in trauma volume during this time period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared trauma patients presenting to our Level III Trauma Center, between April 2019 through June 2019 to those presenting from April 2020 through June 2020, the initial surge in COVID-19 patients. We compared ground level falls (GLF), mot

Firearm assaults against US law enforcement officers in the line-of-duty: Associations with firearm ownership and state firearm laws.

Law enforcement officers are disproportionately affected by occupational injury. Firearm violence is the second leading cause of occupational mortality for this group behind motor vehicle crashes. In the general population, greater firearm ownership and weaker firearm laws are associated with increased firearm violence incidence. It is plausible that a high prevalence of firearms could also be associated with a greater incidence of LEO assault with a firearm. Using data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's, Uniform Crime Reporting, Police Employee Data for 2006-2016, we conducted a panel

Social Determinants of Health and Patients With Traumatic Injuries: Is There a Relationship Between Social Health and Orthopaedic Trauma?

BACKGROUND: Although economic stability, social context, and healthcare access are well-known social determinants of health associated with more challenging recovery after traumatic injury, little is known about how these factors differ by mechanism of injury. Our team sought to use the results of social determinants of health screenings to better understand the population that engaged with psychosocial support services after traumatic musculoskeletal injury and fill a gap in our understanding of patient-reported social health needs. QUESTION/PURPOSE: What is the relationship between social d
