Diagnostic performance and testing costs of pooled testing for molecular detection of tuberculosis in seven countries: a prospective, observational, diagnostic accuracy study.

BACKGROUND: Globally in 2024, only 54% of people diagnosed with tuberculosis received an initial WHO-recommended rapid molecular diagnostic test. Pooled testing could expand access to molecular detection using existing laboratory capacity. We aimed to evaluate the performance of pooled tuberculosis testing in a multicentre diagnostic accuracy study. METHODS: In this prospective diagnostic accuracy study, we enrolled individuals with presumptive tuberculosis through facility-based case finding (district hospitals and primary health centres) and community-based case finding in Bangladesh, Brazi

Inducing Interpersonal Closeness: Effects on Inter-Brain Synchrony and Collaborative Performance.

Feeling close to another person is widely assumed to facilitate collaboration. However, causal evidence that interpersonal closeness improves collaborative behavior remains limited, and it is unclear whether any such influence is accompanied by increased synchrony at the neural level. Previous studies comparing inter-brain synchrony (IBS) and collaborative performance across relationship types (e.g., friends vs. strangers) have reported better collaboration and higher IBS in closer relationships, but these effects are confounded by familiarity and shared interaction history. To address these l

Loss plus adversity: posttraumatic stress and prolonged grief three years after the 2023 Türkiye earthquakes.

Most mental health research following the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes has focused on community samples assessed within the first two years, leaving longer-term trauma- and loss-related psychopathology less well characterized. In this cross-sectional study, 149 adults who directly experienced the earthquakes were assessed at a psychiatry outpatient clinic in the affected region approximately three years after the disaster. Posttraumatic stress, prolonged grief, meaning attributed to loss, and rumination were assessed by self-report, while depression was clinician-rated using the H

Young people's perspectives and experiences with alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks through a practice lens.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of large and sustained declines in young people's alcohol consumption, the alcohol-free and low-alcohol (no/lo) drinks market has expanded rapidly in high-income countries over recent years. There is limited evidence available on how young people have responded to this development. A small number of studies have examined young people's overall consumption as well as the potential for substitution and gateway effects. However, how and why young people consume or reject no/lo drinks, and the specific practices in which consumption might take place, remain under-e

Determinants of early antenatal care booking in Kisumu, Kenya: A hospital-based cross-sectional study applying the Andersen-Newman health service utilization model.

Starting antenatal care early is important for healthy pregnancies. In 2016, the World Health Organization updated its antenatal care guidelines, recommending that pregnant women begin antenatal care by 12 weeks of gestation. Kenya adopted this model in 2022, yet only 29% of women initiate antenatal care early, compared with 37.5% in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study used a cross-sectional design to examine the proportion of women who booked antenatal care early and the factors associated with early booking. The study used Andersen-Newman's health services utilization model as its conceptual fram

The New Face of an Old Disease: A Survey of Young People regarding Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for people under the age of 50. OBJECTIVE: As an initial step of the Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign, the purpose of this study was to survey a large sample of members of the public age 20 to 44 to determine their baseline levels of early-onset colorectal cancer understanding as well as their comfort discussing early-onset colorectal cancer and the associated symptoms. DESIGN: This was an online survey conducted in December 2025, before the launch of the Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer Awareness Ca

The dual role of capsaicin in inflammatory bowel disease: from TRPV1-mediated protection to neurogenic inflammation.

Capsaicin, the pungent vanilloid of chili pepper, is a widely consumed dietary constituent that exerts pleiotropic actions on physiological and pathophysiological processes, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiproliferative, metabolic and cardioprotective effects. Capsaicin is a small, highly lipophilic molecule that is not appreciably hydrolyzed by digestive enzymes in the gut lumen; it is absorbed across the gastrointestinal epithelium largely in its intact form, mainly by passive diffusion, and enters the portal circulation, where it undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in th

Basal Marker ΔNp63α Is Enriched in Pancreatic Cancer Metastases but Not in Primary Tumors Post-Chemotherapy.

Cancer cells within a single pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are most often heterogeneous in their expression of the basal or classical transcriptional program. Predominance of the basal subtype has been associated with poorer patient outcomes and increased resistance to chemotherapy. Based on this, we predicted that basal subtype would be enriched in tumors previously treated with chemotherapy, and in metastases derived from primary PDAC tumors with a mixed basal/classical population. To create matched classical and basal cell lines, we stably transduced two classical PDAC cell lines

Mental health literacy among family nurses in Poland: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: More than a billion people worldwide suffer from mental health disorders, and primary health care (PHC) is critical for early recognition and treatment of these medical conditions. Family nurses (FNs), as the patient's first point of contact with the healthcare system, are considered to play an important role in identifying mental health disorders. Mental health literacy (MHL) refers to the knowledge and beliefs that help with the recognition, treatment and prevention of mental disorders; yet, little is known about the level of MHL among family nurses in Poland. The aim of this stu

Asymmetric reverse buffering patterns of source-specific social support in the associations between depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among college students.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal ideation remains a major mental health concern among college students. This study examined whether perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others differentially moderates the associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with suicidal ideation, with particular attention to a potential asymmetric buffering pattern. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 504 college students using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and Self-Rati

Parent and friend support and communication as correlates of sexual and gender minority alcohol use in sexual contexts.

PURPOSE: Emerging adults who identify as sexual and gender minorities (SGM) often report greater alcohol use and adverse sexual health experiences compared to cisgender heterosexual (CH) peers. This study investigated whether participants' identity as either SGM or CH was related to drinking in sexual contexts (DISC) through its relationship with levels of social support, supportive communication, and sex communication from parents and friends. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey responses were collected on-line during November 2024-May 2025 from a convenience sample of 674 university students in

Barriers in Accessing Postpartum Mental Health Care and Coping Strategies Among Migrant and Refugee Women With Postpartum Depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) significantly impacts the well-being of mothers and their families, with migrant and refugee women being particularly vulnerable due to unique stressors and limited access to care. Hence, this scoping review examines the specific barriers refugee and migrant women experiencing PPD face in accessing mental healthcare, as well as the diverse informal support strategies they rely on. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelin

Childhood unpredictability and problematic internet pornography use among Chinese university students: a moderated serial mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have shown that childhood unpredictability affects problematic internet pornography use in college students, the fundamental mediating mechanisms and moderating boundary conditions have not been thoroughly investigated. Consequently, the current research aimed to determine whether life history strategy and body image serve as mediators in the link between childhood unpredictability and problematic internet pornography use, and whether these mediating pathways are influenced by perceived friend support. METHODS: Using a two-wave cross-sectional survey desi

FRIENDS - friendship-based regulation of individual emotions in networks in daily situations: An EMA study on partner-motive pairing and social outcomes in adult friendships.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal emotion regulation depends not only on which strategy is used but on whom people turn to. Previous work suggests that individuals select regulation partners according to their perceived competence for a specific emotion. We examined whether this extends to regulatory motives, and whether partner-motive pairing is associated with better interaction outcomes, higher psychological well-being, and lower social loneliness. METHODS: In a preregistered 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study, 106 adults reported on their friend contacts at four semi-random prompt

Consulting Dr. Google: Two experimental studies on seeking mental health information online.

The internet is a widely used source for mental health information, yet it remains unclear whether online searches lead to a more thorough understanding of mental disorders. This study examined whether individuals find accurate mental health information online and whether searching the internet enhances their sense of preparedness for health decision-making in two experiments. In Experiment 1 (N = 243), we randomly assigned participants to one of three case vignettes describing a close friend experiencing symptoms of a well-known mental disorder (depression), a lesser-known mental disorder (so

Association between types of social isolation and all-cause mortality among the survivors in the disaster-affected area of the great East Japan earthquake: The RIAS study.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether different types of social isolation after a disaster are associated with all-cause mortality, which currently remains unknown, using data from a prospective cohort study of survivors in an area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. METHODS: In total, 9311 participants (3600 men and 5711 women) were followed up from October 1, 2011, to the occurrence of censoring events: death, loss to follow-up, or the end of the follow-up period (December 31, 2017). Social isolation types were assessed using the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6) Family Sub

Religious Affiliation, Active Participation, and Social Connectedness in Mainland China: A Trend Analysis of Older Adults, 2012-2023.

Social isolation is a growing public health concern among older adults in rapidly aging China. Drawing on social capital theory and the congregational-network account of religion and well-being, we distinguish affiliation (identity) from active participation (practice), two dimensions of religious involvement rarely examined together outside Christian-majority Western contexts. Mainland China, where religion is diffused, largely non-congregational, and in a minority position, widens the gap between them and so offers a stringent test. We expected the two dimensions to be associated with social

Maternal social networks and child nutrition in Belagavi, India: opportunities and risks.

BACKGROUND: Strengthening mothers' social networks can help address child malnutrition and improve health outcomes. This is important in Belagavi district, India, where undernutrition and anaemia remain prevalent among children under five. However, social networks may also have unintended negative influences on child health, depending on their structure and the information and support they provide. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the association between maternal social networks, defined by the number of close friends, on child nutritional outcomes in Belagavi, Karnataka, India. METHODS: We us
