Copper Recovery from Metallurgical Slags Using Biomass in the Form of Fruit Seeds/Stones as a Reducing Agent.

Civilizational development, which depends on the availability of raw materials, has accelerated tremendously in recent decades. This is due to globalization and the growth of emerging markets. It represents a huge opportunity for an innovative approach to both production and consumption. Along with civilizational growth, we also face negative consequences that lead to climate change. To meet the demands regarding climate neutrality, people have started analyzing the possibility of running production processes using substrates that either eliminate or significantly reduce the use of non-renewab

Sensor Modality Versus Pretraining for Recognising Bed-Exit-Relevant Postural Transitions: A Gyroscope-Focused Feasibility Study on Public Wearable-IMU Data.

Wearable ward monitoring must eventually detect when a patient leaves the bed, yet the brief postural transitions that begin a bed exit are under-examined relative to dynamic activities. As a feasibility study, we used a public waist-worn six-axis inertial dataset (30 healthy subjects) to ask which sensor axes carry these transitions and whether a pretrained foundation model helps. We defined a ten-class task of four basic activities and six directional transitions, treating the two lie-to-upright transitions as the bed-exit-relevant classes, evaluated with subject-grouped cross-validation. Vulnerability and resilience to activity-based anorexia are not sex-dependent.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is more prevalent in women than men, although rates in men are rising. Animal models can provide insight into whether this differential prevalence is rooted in biological mechanisms, but prior studies have yielded conflicting findings. Using the activity-based anorexia (ABA) model, we previously demonstrated that female mice exhibit distinct vulnerable and resilient phenotypes. Here, we use this phenotypic framework to investigate sex differences in ABA susceptibility. METHODS: We tested young adult male C57BL/6N mice using the same ABA protocol used to tes

From Myotubes to Skeletal Muscle: Cimicifuga racemosa Extract Ze 450 Preserves Muscle Mass and Affects Skeletal Muscle Energy Metabolism Under Conditions of Metabolic Stress.

Preservation of skeletal muscle is an important consideration when evaluating weight-loss interventions, particularly during menopause, when adverse changes in body composition occur. We investigated the effects of Cimicifuga racemosa extract Ze 450 on skeletal muscle. Differentiated C2C12 myotubes were treated with Ze 450, dexamethasone (DEX), or their combination. Non-ovariectomized female Wistar rats were assigned to one of five groups: standard diet, high-fat diet (HF), HF plus voluntary running, HF plus Ze 450 (130 mg/kg/day), or HF plus Ze 450 and voluntary running. Muscle mass and fiber

Seq2Pocket: Augmenting protein language models for spatially consistent binding site prediction.

MOTIVATION: Protein-ligand binding site prediction (LBS) is important for many areas of structural biology and molecular modeling, where, as in other tasks, protein language models (pLMs) have shown great promise. In their application to LBS, the pLM classifies each amino acid as binding or not, but translating these predictions into three-dimensional binding pockets remains challenging; in particular, residue-centric predictions tend to produce spatially fragmented pockets. RESULTS: We present Seq2Pocket, a methodology for pocket-level LBS prediction that combines pLM finetuning, data enhanc

Anatomical Heterogeneity in Longitudinal CA15-3 and CEA Rises Preceding Metastatic Breast Cancer Progression.

Cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) are used alongside clinical and radiologic assessment in metastatic breast cancer, but progression may occur without a preceding increase in either marker. We examined whether this differed according to newly documented anatomical involvement around radiographic progression. We analyzed 4517 radiographic progression events from 1592 patients in the Memorial Sloan Kettering-Clinical History of Real-World Data (MSK-CHORD) breast cancer cohort. A qualifying marker rise was defined as a ≥25% increase in CA15-3 or CEA from the precedin

A Preliminary Smartphone-Based IMU System for Walking, Running, and Cycling Recognition Under Different Carrying Modes.

This paper presents a preliminary smartphone-based inertial measurement unit (IMU) system for recognizing three common motion types, namely walking, running, and cycling, under different carrying modes. The proposed system is implemented on an Android smartphone and uses accelerometer and gyroscope signals to support both offline evaluation and on-device recognition. The current dataset contains six motion-carrying combinations formed by three motion types and two carrying modes, with more than 15 data segments collected for each category. Each segment lasts approximately 40-60+ s and was coll

Real-Time Fall Detection in Indoor Environments Using FMCW Radar and Lightweight Ensemble CNN on Edge Devices.

Falls are a leading cause of injury and mortality among the elderly, particularly indoors where privacy concerns limit real-time monitoring. This study developed a privacy-preserving, real-time fall detection system using a frequency-modulated continuous wave radar sensor and a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture deployed on an edge device. To address the limitations of wearable and vision-based methods, the system leverages contactless radar sensing and an ensemble of two independent CNN models, namely, a base model designed to capture the entire fall sequence for high

A Survey of Map Construction and Management Methods for Single Embodied Agents.

Embodied intelligent systems need to complete the closed loop of perception-understanding-decision-execution in the real world. One of their core capabilities is constructing, maintaining, and utilizing environmental maps. Maps not only support localization and navigation but also directly influence obstacle avoidance, safe interaction, mobile manipulation, long-term memory, and task planning. With the rapid development of multi-sensor fusion Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), semantic understanding, and neural scene representations, robot maps have evolved from traditional two-dime

Integrating Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation with Exercise-Based Rehabilitation for Ischemic Stroke Recovery: A Preclinical Study.

Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, and effective neurorehabilitative strategies to enhance functional recovery are limited. This preclinical study compared noninvasive low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), aerobic exercise (AE) rehabilitation, and their combination in a mouse model of ischemic stroke. Transient focal cerebral ischemia was induced in male C57BL/6 mice using middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Male mice assigned to LIPUS-containing groups received LIPUS preconditioning for three consecutive days before MCAO, followed by two days of

Histomorphometrical and histochemical studies on the omasum of adult Bakerwali goat, non-descript goats and non-descript sheep of Jammu region: A comparative adaptational perspective.

BACKGROUND: The omasum absorb water, electrolytes, volatile fatty acids by regulating the flow of digesta from the reticulum to the abomasum. In the Jammu region, small ruminants are raised under various agro-climatic conditions. Sheep mainly graze, while goats primarily browse. Such differences in feeding habits influences anatomy of digestive tract, especially the omasum. Studying omasum structure helps explain differences in digestive efficiency, nutrient utilization, and environmental adaptation among these species. AIMS: The present study aimed to compare anatomy of omasum in Bakerwali g

Pipeline for acoustic classification of ant (Formica rufa) behaviours: a suggested workflow for soil macrofauna studies.

Acoustic monitoring has been touted as an automatable monitoring technique to study the presence, activity or acoustic communication of soil animals. Yet current acoustic approaches have been criticized for lacking understanding of what soil fauna behaviours they are detecting. We investigate whether specific insect behaviours could be identified with sound by recording Red Wood Ants (Formica rufa) behaviours (running, struggling, biting and stridulation-like behaviour) with a contact microphone. We label recordings by hand, then extract two types of acoustic features, spectral and cepstral fe

The role of plantar flexor function, isometric strength and task-specific kinetics, in sprint and jump performance.

The role of isometric plantar flexion (PF) strength in sprinting and jumping is unclear and, in part, may be due to methodological issues with isometric dynamometry leading to inaccurate measures of PF strength. In addition, the relationship, and thus functional relevance, of isometric PF strength with PF kinetics during these athletic tasks remains unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the interrelationships of isometric PF strength, task-specific sprint and jump PF kinetics and overall performance during jumps and sprint acceleration. Three-dimensional kinematics and ground reaction f

BLITSFR: scalable comparative genomics with self-contained interactive single file report.

MOTIVATION: Comparative genomics routinely requires the alignment of query genomes against a reference to delineate conserved and variable regions, yet existing tools often produce static visualisations or necessitate centralised web services and data uploads. RESULTS: To address this, we present BLITSFR (BLAST Interactive Tracks in Single-File Report), a command-line tool that compares query genomes against a reference and returns a single interactive HTML file. The report opens in any modern browser, requiring no server or data upload, and lets users explore conserved and variable regions a
