On the application of single parameteraging to glass equilibration.

The kinetics of physical aging in glasses is typically described by models accounting for the material time concept, which, via the time dependent relaxation time-the material "inner clock"-linearizes the response. Although this description has been shown to be successful for relatively small temperature jumps, typically close to the glass transition temperature, Tg, its validity for large jumps is a matter of open debate. Here, we implement the material time concept within the single parameter aging model with a single time scale, that is, the one of the main α relaxation, and apply it to iso

Ultrahigh-Linearity Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Dual Pressure-Frequency Sensing and Multi-Modal Recognition.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) hold great promise as self-powered sensors, but their practical applications are limited by charge leakage at high filler concentrations, coupled pressure-frequency responses, and poor discrimination of materials with similar triboelectric outputs, such as fabrics. In this work, a multifunctional design integrating a double-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite film-based TENG (DMP-TENG) with a dual-TENG strategy was developed to address these challenges. To determine a suitable base layer, a single-coated MWCNTs

Explaining the paradoxical effects of poverty on risk taking: The Desperation Threshold Model.

The impacts of poverty and material scarcity on human decision making appear paradoxical. One set of findings associates poverty with risk aversion, whilst another set associates it with risk taking. We present an idealised rational-choice model, the Desperation Threshold Model (DTM), that explains how both these accounts can be correct. The DTM assumes that there are basic needs whose satisfaction is not fully divisible. This generates an S-shaped utility function for material resources. The value of gaining a dollar is at first small (because even with the extra dollar, basic needs still can

Prolonged Opioid Usage After Surgically Treated Pelvic Fracture in Working Aged Patients: Prevalence, Demographics, and Multivariable Prediction Model.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic fracture (PF) is a serious injury that can lead to prolonged opioid use. We examined opioid use after surgical treatment of PF in a working-age population in Finland and identified predictors of prolonged opioid use. METHODS: Using nationwide registries, we identified all Finnish inhabitants aged 18 to 65 years undergoing PF surgery between 2015 and 2021 (n = 233). These patients' demographic data, depression, trauma mechanisms, opioid purchases, and socioeconomic status were retrieved. The primary outcome was the prolonged opioid usage, defined as having more than one opio

Cross-sectional and prospective associations between jump performance and functional outcomes in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of age-related functional decline is essential, yet commonly used mobility assessments often lack sensitivity to detect early decline in high-functioning older adults. Muscle power deteriorates early with aging and has been associated with functional outcomes, suggesting it may be a sensitive marker of functional decline. Jump tests directly assess lower-limb muscle power, but their relationship with functional status or future outcomes has not been synthesized. This review evaluates cross-sectional and prospective associations between jump performance (JP) and

Analysis of Fall and Jump Behaviors in Freely Moving Drosophila melanogaster Using 58 fps Video.

Analysis of freely moving Drosophila captures complex movement behaviors. However, previous experiments have been limited by the inability to distinguish between falls and downward jumps (downjumps). Here, individual flies moving freely in a culture vial were recorded using a single 58 fps video camera. Upward jumps were readily identified by positive movement in the vertical direction. Several statistical and machine learning methods were used to distinguish between falls and downjumps, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), K-Means Clustering, Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projec

[Synergy of Carbon Reduction and Pollution Control in the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle: Spatiotemporal Patterns, Regional Disparities, and Dynamic Evolution].

Under the "dual carbon" strategy, this study systematically analyzes the spatiotemporal patterns, regional disparities, and dynamic evolution of the synergy between carbon reduction and pollution control in the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle. Based on panel data of 144 districts and counties from 2000 to 2022, empirical research was conducted using methods such as the coupling coordination model, standard deviational ellipse (SDE), spatial autocorrelation analysis, Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition, and both traditional and spatial Markov chain models. The results show that: ① The synerg

Comparative gliding performance of Anolis lizards among three Caribbean ecomorphs.

Anole lizards (genus Anolis) have repeatedly and independently occupied arboreal niches, and in parallel have evolved associated morphologies and locomotor behaviors. In arboreal vertebrates more generally, parachuting and gliding have frequently evolved in response to selective pressure for targeting and controlled landings during either falls or intentional jumps. Here we describe morphological features and aerial performance among five anole species representing the trunk-ground, trunk-crown, and crown giant ecomorphs. Aerial behavior within a vertical wind tunnel was used to evaluate glidi

Fall patterns and outcomes after a moderate urban earthquake without structural collapse: a retrospective cohort from Istanbul.

BACKGROUND: Moderate earthquakes - where structural collapse is absent - represent an underexplored public health challenge. In such events, injuries arise not from building failure but from behavior-associated injury mechanisms. This study aims to characterize injury patterns and mechanisms among individuals presenting to a tertiary emergency department following the 6.2 Mw Istanbul earthquake of April 23, 2025, and to identify implications for community-level behavioral preparedness. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital serving a catchment population o

Causes and associated factors of mountain bike injuries in bike parks in western Austria: a two-season descriptive epidemiological study.

Mountain bike terrain parks have become increasingly popular, particularly at ski resorts where chairlifts transport riders uphill to enjoy downhill cycling. These parks feature trails of varying difficulty with artificial obstacles designed for jumps and stunts, which contribute to a unique pattern of injuries. This retrospective epidemiological study analyzed mountain biking injuries in two bike parks in western Austria during the summer seasons of 2023 and 2024. The bike parks are located within two major ski resorts, where lifts transport riders and their bikes uphill. Injury data were sys

An Analysis of 12,247 Severe Suicide Attempts Between 2010 and 2023 by Trauma-Inducing Mechanisms: Increasing Frequency and Sex-Specific Differences.

Background/Objectives: Suicide attempts represent a major global health problem. Traumatic suicide methods, such as falls from great heights, stab wounds, and gunshot wounds, frequently result in severe or fatal injuries. The COVID-19 pandemic, as well as broader societal stressors including economic uncertainty and geopolitical conflicts, has substantially increased psychological stress in the population and has been discussed as a potential influencing factor for suicidal behavior. The aim of this study was to analyze severe traumatic suicide attempts and to evaluate the potential influence

Silent Lung Injury: Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome without Chest Trauma Following a High-Level Fall.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening form of non-cardiogenic respiratory failure that can occur after severe systemic or traumatic insults. We report a rare case of ARDS in a 17-year-old female who sustained a burst fracture at the second lumbar vertebra and bilateral calcaneal fractures after jumping from a height of six meters. She underwent uneventful spinal decompression and instrumentation six hours post-injury, with stable hemodynamics and balanced fluid administration. Initial chest CT showed no lung abnormalities. On postoperative day 2, she developed respir

Height Matters: Unraveling Spinal Injury Patterns, Neurological Deficits, and Complications in Suicide Jump Survivors.

STUDY DESIGN: Case series. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the characteristics of spinal and other injuries in survivors of suicide attempts who jump from heights. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Suicide attempts by jumping often result in severe injuries, particularly affecting the spine. The severity and pattern of these injuries are strongly influenced by the height of the fall. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies directly correlating jump height with injury outcomes. METHODS: Patient data from 100 survivors of suicide attempts were retrospectively analyzed and categorize

Fracture Risk Evaluation of Trochlear Groove Depth in Toy and Small-Breed Dogs Under Gait-Based Loading: A Finite Element and Fatigue Analysis Study.

This study evaluated fracture risk associated with varying trochlear groove depth-to-patellar thickness (D/T) ratios in toy and small-breed dogs using finite element analysis and cadaveric mechanical testing. Finite element models derived from computed tomography data of a 4.5-kg toy poodle were adjusted to simulate D/T ratios ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 and analyzed for von Mises stress, principal strain, safety factor, and fatigue life under standing, trotting, and jumping conditions. Increasing D/T ratios led to progressive rises in stress and compressive strain, with the safety factor falling

Rolling after landing reduces ankle inversion and rotational parameters during perturbed and unperturbed landings.

Lateral ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries, frequently occurring in team sports involving player contact. Despite the well-documented injury mechanism of lateral ankle sprain, its incidence remains high. This study aimed to investigate the effect of three landing strategies, natural, soft, and rolling after landing, on ankle joint angles, angular velocities, and moments associated with lateral ankle sprain, with and without unanticipated mid-air trunk perturbation. Twenty-eight recreational athletes performed double-leg jumps with single-leg landings under three la

Emergency radiology of severe acute injury in extreme alpine summer sports: a pictorial essay.

Extreme alpine summer sports are increasingly popular and expose participants to high-energy trauma in remote mountain environments. This pictorial essay reviews the emergency radiology of severe acute injuries associated with down-hill mountain biking, rock climbing, paragliding, BASE jumping, canyoning, and rafting, with emphasis on mechanism-based imaging interpretation. Injury patterns differ across disciplines but are largely determined by velocity, fall height, landing posture, impact surface, axial loading, torsional forces, and water-related hazards. Down-hill mountain biking commonly

Structural basis for Mg²⁺-glycine synergy in the tandem glycine riboswitch revealed by cryo-EM.

Part I of this article discussed the potential functional importance of genetic mutations and alleles of the human cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) gene. The impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the clearance of and response to a series of cardiovascular drugs was addressed. Since CYP2D6 plays a major role in the metabolism of a large number of other drugs, Part II of the article highlights the impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the response to other groups of clinically used drugs. Although clinical studies have observed a gene-dose effect for some tricyclic antidepressants, it is difficult to establ

Dog agility tunnel risks for incidents.

BACKGROUND: Flexible tunnels are the second most common obstacle on all dog agility courses, surpassed only by jumps. There has been a lot of debate and concern regarding risk factors associated with slips, falls and delayed exits (unseen slips, missteps, trips, falls). However, only one study was found which focused on the tunnel-related injuries, and it relied on handler reporting and did not consider base rates of the risk factors. As such, it is currently unknown which risk factors are statistically predictive of incidents. This study addresses this gap. METHODS: Observational data from l

Equivalent Fall Height and Aerial Maneuver Difficulty Both Influence Landing Stability on World Cup Slopestyle Rollover Jumps For Skiers and Snowboarders.

This study investigates how landing stability on slopestyle jumps is affected by jump design and the athletes' aerial maneuvers, in World Cup skiers and snowboarders. The data were recorded on rollover jumps from a World Cup Slopestyle competition using a geodetic video method, allowing for a reconstruction of the athletes' center of mass trajectories in 3D-space and calculation of equivalent fall height (EFH). Aerial maneuvers and landing stability were assessed by human raters. A generalized estimating equations method with binary logistic regression was performed to investigate how aerial m
