Wearable Fall Detection System with Real-Time Localization and Notification Capabilities.

Despite significant progress in fall detection systems, many of the proposed algorithms remain difficult to implement in real-world applications. A common limitation is the lack of location awareness, especially in outdoor scenarios where accurately determining the fall location is crucial for a timely emergency response. Moreover, the complexity of many existing algorithms poses a challenge for deployment on edge devices, such as wearable systems, which are constrained by limited computational resources and battery life. As a result, these solutions are often impractical for long-term, contin

Differentiating Human Falls from Daily Activities Using Machine Learning Methods Based on Accelerometer and Altimeter Sensor Fusion Feature Engineering.

This paper presents a detailed analysis of signal data acquired from wearable sensors such as accelerometers and barometric altimeters for human activity recognition, with an emphasis on fall detection. This research addressed two types of activity recognition tasks: a binary classification problem between activities of daily living (ADLs) and simulated fall activities and a multiclass classification problem involving five different activities (running, walking, sitting down, jumping, and falling). By combining features derived from both sensors, traditional machine models such as random fores

A comparative study of the injury patterns and inflammatory response between suicidal and unintentional falls from height in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Patients who have fallen from great height with suicidal intent present unique challenges, including delayed medical attention, injury patterns that are often difficult to detect, severe hypothermia, and difficulties obtaining informed consent due to the patient's mental state. Further delays to treatment can be caused by legal and logistical hurdles, such as coordinating with legal guardians or family members. These co-factors contribute to the high reported overall complication rates in these cases, which can reach up to 50%. This study aims to analyse injury patterns, inflammato

Potential benefits and human systems integration of parastronauts with bilateral vestibulopathy for a space mission.

Upon landing after long-duration spaceflight, astronauts often experience motion sickness and impaired performance in mission-critical tasks such as egress, navigating obstacles, jumping, and recovering from falls. These changes are mainly attributable to central adaptations in their vestibular system. Current inflight countermeasures, which primarily focus on strength and endurance, are insufficient for preparing astronauts for postflight recovery. New countermeasures must be designed and tested to enable crewmembers to function without the extensive post-mission recovery support after landin

A rare case of the coexistence of injuries typical of a fall from height.

Falls from heights constitute the second most common cause of suicides in Poland, often resulting in multiple organ injuries. This paper describes a rare case of a 32-year-old man who died after jumping from a four-story building. The autopsy and post-mortem computed tomography analysis revealed a unique coexistence of injuries characteristic of a fall onto extended lower limbs, such as a circular fracture of the base of the skull as well as multiple fractures of the spine, pelvis, and lower limbs. The geodetic analysis enabled the determination of the fall height and flight range, which facil

Using Pose Estimation and 3D Rendered Models to Study Leg-Mediated Self-righting by Lanternflies.

The ability to upright quickly and efficiently when overturned on the ground (terrestrial self-righting) is crucial for living organisms and robots. Previous studies have mapped the diverse behaviors used by various animals to self-right on different substrates, and proposed physical models to explain how body morphology can favor specific self-righting methods. However, to our knowledge, no studies have quantified and modeled all of an animal's limb motions during these complicated behaviors. Here, we studied terrestrial self-righting by immature invasive spotted lanternflies (Lycorma delicat

Functional activities essential for space exploration performed in partial gravity during parabolic flight.

Test subjects were assessed in a partial gravity environment during parabolic flight while they performed mission-critical activities that challenged their balance and locomotion. These functional activities included rising from a seated position and walking, jumping down, recovering from falls, and maintaining an upright stance. Twelve volunteers were tested during 10 parabolas that produced 0.25×g, 0.5×g, or 0.75×g, and at 1×g during level flight intervals between parabolas. Additionally, 14 other subjects were tested using identical procedures in a 1×g laboratory setting. Partial gravity al

Biomechanical and morphological determinants of maximal jumping performance in callitrichine monkeys.

Jumping is a crucial behavior in fitness-critical activities including locomotion, resource acquisition, courtship displays and predator avoidance. In primates, paleontological evidence suggests selection for enhanced jumping ability during their early evolution. However, our interpretation of the fossil record remains limited, as no studies have explicitly linked levels of jumping performance with interspecific skeletal variation. We used force platform analyses to generate biomechanical data on maximal jumping performance in three genera of callitrichine monkeys falling along a continuum of

Sleep Phylogeny: Have We Jumped the Shark?

Sleep is considered to be ubiquitous in the animal kingdom. Scientists in part believe this because sleep is increasingly defined solely by behavioral measures. This has resulted in an astonishing expansion of species reported to sleep. But have we gone too far? Have scientists jumped the shark? This idiom refers to when an idea has exhausted its core intent and creates ideas that are discordant with its original purpose. In this commentary, I discuss what I see as an emerging problem in how we define sleep and the attendant implications.

Improved processing workflow and student transparency with student mistreatment reports leads to graduation questionnaire data gains.

Mistreatment of students has been historically documented as common in U.S. medical schools, but graduate questionnaire (GQ) data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) displays high numbers of students who have experienced mistreatment but not reported the incident. There are many reasons within the literature as to why students do not report their experiences, including fear of academic repercussion or a misunderstanding of what constitutes as mistreatment. Our institution found through GQ data that there was a shortcoming in understanding policies and knowledge of procedur

Understanding the Fluctuations in Korea's Suicide Rates: A Change-Point Analysis and Interrupted Time Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Korea has witnessed significant fluctuations in its suicide rates in recent decades, which may be related to modifications in its death registration system. This study aimed to explore the structural shifts in suicide trends, as well as accidental and ill-defined deaths in Korea, and to analyze the patterns of these changes. METHODS: We analyzed age-adjusted death rates for suicides, deaths due to transport accidents, falls, drowning, fire-related incidents, poisonings, other external causes, and ill-defined deaths in Korea from 1997 to 2021. We identified change-points using the

Applicability of the Madymo Pedestrian Model for forensic fall analysis.

Forensic reconstruction and scenario evaluation are crucial in investigations of suspicious deaths related to falls from a height. In such cases, distinguishing between accidental falls, being pushed or jumping is an important but difficult task, since objective methods to do so are currently lacking. This paper explores the possibility of repurposing a passive rigid body model of a human from commercially available crash simulation software for forensic reconstruction and scenario evaluation of humans dropping from heights. To use this approach, a prerequisite is that the human body model can

Comparison of Reported Fatalities, Falls and Injuries in Thoroughbred Horse Jumps and Flat Races in the 2022 and 2023 Jumps Race Seasons in Victoria, Australia.

Jumps racing is a form of Thoroughbred horse racing that involves hurdles and steeples and typically longer distances, and heavier weights compared with flat racing, which does not incorporate obstacles. In Australia, jumps racing is carried out only in Victoria, one of eight states and territories. The continuation of jumps racing is contentious due to the higher risk of fatalities, falls and injuries for horses, compared with flat racing. While measures have been introduced by the industry to improve the safety of riders and horses, the rates of fatalities, falls and injuries in horses parti
