Post-traumatic pituitary stalk transection syndrome (PSTS) expeditiously manifested after a fall from a height combined with acute traumatic spinal cord injury: a rare case report with review of literature.

Post-traumatic pituitary stalk transection syndrome (PSTS) is an extremely rare cause of combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD), affecting approximately 9 per 100,000 cases of traumatic brain injury. In contrast, pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) is also a rare cause of CPHD. Importantly, these conditions are often confused due to their similar names and resembling findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PSIS has been thought to be a prenatal developmental event resulting from a couple of genetic aberrations. In typical PSIS, anterior pituitary hormone deficiencies are r

Nano-droplet jumping due to surface wettability variation: molecular modeling approach.

The effect of substrate hydrophobicity on the dynamics of water nano-droplets is computationally studied using the molecular dynamics method. It is observed that the droplet moves upward by increasing the substrate hydrophobicity and then falls down onto the substrate, and during this process, the droplet-substrate interfacial area effectively declines. Moreover, the results indicate that above a critical substrate hydrophobicity, which depends on the droplet radius, the droplet completely detaches from the substrate. The droplet behavior is described at the molecular level using van der Waals

Sofa and bed-related pediatric trauma injuries treated in United States emergency departments.

INTRODUCTION: Children under the age of 5 years suffer from the highest rates of fall-related injuries. Caretakers often leave young children on sofas and beds, however, falling and rolling off these fixtures can lead to serious injury. We investigated the epidemiologic characteristics and trends of bed and sofa-related injuries among children aged <5 years treated in US emergency departments (EDs). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 2007 through 2021 using sample weights to estimate national numbers and rates of

Risk Factors for Horse Fatality in Thoroughbred Jumps Racing in New Zealand.

The aim of this study was to examine the race-, horse- and jockey-level risk factors for race day fatality in New Zealand Thoroughbred jumps racing using retrospective race day data from the 2011/12 to 2021/22 seasons (n = 8,970 starts). There were 51 race day fatalities resulting in an incidence rate of 5.7 per 1,000 starts (95% C.I. 4.3-7.5). The majority of fatalities were the result of fractures (44/51, 4.9 per 1,000 starts, 95% C.I. 3.7-6.6). Steeplechase and hurdle races had the same incidence of fatal fractures of 4.9 per 1,000 starts (95% C.I. 3.7-6.6, P > .05). Most (70.5%) of the fat

Air-to-land transitions: from wingless animals and plant seeds to shuttlecocks and bio-inspired robots.

Recent observations of wingless animals, including jumping nematodes, springtails, insects, and wingless vertebrates like geckos, snakes, and salamanders, have shown that their adaptations and body morphing are essential for rapid self-righting and controlled landing. These skills can reduce the risk of physical damage during collision, minimize recoil during landing, and allow for a quick escape response to minimize predation risk. The size, mass distribution, and speed of an animal determine its self-righting method, with larger animals depending on the conservation of angular momentum and s

Waiting impulsivity in progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Waiting impulsivity in progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson's syndrome (PSP-RS) is difficult to assess, and its regulation is known to involve nucleus accumbens (NAc) subregions. We investigated waiting impulsivity using the "jumping the gun" (JTG) sign, which is defined as premature initiation of clapping before the start signal in the three-clap test and compared clinical features of PSP-RS patients with and without the sign and analyzed neural connectivity and microstructural changes in NAc subregions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A positive JTG sign was defined as the participa

Preclinical assessment of rodent jumping power with a novel electrical stimulation-assisted device.

Sarcopenia is a progressive loss of muscle mass and strength that is associated with increasing the risk of falls, musculoskeletal diseases, and chronic metabolic diseases. However, the animal models adopted to study sarcopenia face limitations since the functional tests conducted on human cannot be directly adapted to animals because the animals do not follow instructions. Moreover, current preclinical research tools for muscle function assessment, such as the rotarod, grip strength, and treadmill, have limitations, including low-intensity simple movements, evaluator subjectivity, and limited

A Novel Correction Methodology to Improve the Performance of a Low-Cost Hyperspectral Portable Snapshot Camera.

The development of spectral sensors (SSs) capable of retrieving spectral information have opened new opportunities to improve several environmental and agricultural practices, e.g., crop breeding, plant phenotyping, land use monitoring, and crop classification. The SSs are classified as multispectral and hyperspectral (HS) based on the number of the spectral bands resolved and sampled during data acquisition. Large-scale applications of the HS remain limited due to the cost of this type of technology and the technical difficulties in hyperspectral data processing. Low-cost portable hyperspectr

Taoist way of a balanced exercise training cocktail for the management of primary hypertension in older persons.

High blood pressure is the world's leading risk factor for mortality, affecting nearly half of the global population aged 50-79 years. Physical inactivity is one factor contributing to the prevalence of hypertension. This paper discusses a new concept for the management of hypertension in older persons. We are inclined to fade the current guidelines used in China, the United States, and Europe. Although demonstrating irrefutable benefits for blood pressure regulation, the guidelines fail to address the need to incorporate balance exercises, which are crucial for mitigating the risk of falling.

Factors associated with safe completion of Fédération Equestre Internationale eventing cross-country (2008-2018).

BACKGROUND: Equestrian eventing involves competing in three phases: dressage, jumping, and cross-country. Competitors are ranked by number of penalties accrued-with those who have fewer penalties ranked higher. Completing the cross-country phase with zero obstacle penalties is commonly referred to as 'running clear'. Understanding factors associated with running clear can help athletes plan strategically for success, while also helping governing bodies to refine qualification criteria for elite levels. OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to identify factors associated with running clear in

Perceived risk for falls and decision-making in riding raised ramps in mountain biking: a pilot study.

Mountain biking (MTB) is a challenging activity where riders face constant decisions on whether to attempt technical paths or features (e.g., wooden ramps and jumps) that pose risk for falls and injuries. Risk homeostasis theory posits that riders pursue an optimal non-zero level of risk that balances the rewards of attempting challenging features with the need to avoid unreasonable risk for injury. Little is known on how riders judge risk, and the level of risk that riders deem unacceptable. We conducted experiments with experienced MTB riders (n = 17) to examine how their willingness to ride

Clinical Practice Update: Achilles Tendon Rupture.

Achilles tendon rupture is a common injury. It most often occurs in middle aged men who participate in recreational sports. The injury classically presents with a loud popping noise and immediate pain and weakness of the lower extremity during actions such as jumping or running. The diagnosis is made clinically, but an MRI is often obtained for confirmation of rupture and to aid in surgical planning. Treatment is either operative, with open or minimally invasive approaches, or non-operative, with functional bracing or plaster casting. Surgical treatment was preferred for much of the 20th centu

Traumatic hemorrhage of the thyroid as a work-related injury: a case report and review of the literature.

Traumatic hemorrhage of the thyroid gland resulting from blunt injury to the neck is a very rare event. Particular neck positions can expose the thyroid to trauma, especially in motor vehicle collisions, falls, direct blows, or sport activities. Preexisting conditions such as goiters, adenomas, and cysts can increase the risk of bleeding, reducing the force required to rupture the gland and make the thyroid more prone to injury. The authors report the case of a 53-year-old man who was involved in a fire while working on maintenance of a liquid petroleum gas (LPG)-powered car. He subsequently p

Novel Scoring Formula to Predict Survival in Patients of Primary Tongue Cancer Belonging to Tobacco Chewing Population.

Background. Leprosy reactions are acute inflammatory episodes that occur mainly in the multibacillary forms of the disease. The reactions are classified as type 1 (reverse reaction) or type 2 (erythema nodosum leprosum). Leprosy-associated oxidative stress has been widely demonstrated. Several recent studies have shown uric acid (UA) to have antioxidative effects under pathologic conditions. The objective of this study was to assess serum levels of UA in patients with leprosy reactions, with the aim of monitoring their levels before and after treatment, compared with levels in leprosy patients
