A case is presented involving an acute fatality resulting from self-administration of atracurium, a muscle relaxant by a 45-year-old nurse. In the body, atracurium undergoes a spontaneous non-enzymatic degradation to laudanosine and an acrylate moiety. OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of quality control tests after routine maintenance procedures of anaesthesia machines.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective laboratory study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Over a 4-year-period, anaesthesia machines were checked after regular maintenance procedures, in order to detect unrecognized dysfunctions before clinical use.

An adult male was found dead beneath a pool of sewage in the pump room of a fish market. Autopsy revealed the cause of death to be suffocation after aspirating sewage into the respiratory tract. Two very different cases of overdose with tranylcypromine are presented. One clinical case involving the ingestion of 400 mg tranylcypromine with suicidal intention and one fatality with a suspicion of possible tranylcypromine overdose were examined. A reliable and sensitive method has been developed to assess the concentrations of the hypnotic drug triazolam in human tissues, including putrefied tissues. The method involves a 3-step solvent extraction, clean-up on a silica gel column and gas chromatography using a nitrogen phosphorus detector and a capillary column. Estazolam was used as an internal standard. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration range 1 ng/g-1 microgram/g and the lower limit of detection was 0.5 ng/g. A forensic study was performed on the toxicological effects of triazolam using putrefied tissues.
