PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to comprehensively identify and categorize the specific injury patterns associated with IEDs and other explosive devices across military and civilian populations to improve medical preparedness, resource planning strategies, and treatment approaches.
METHODS: A search on PubMed und Scopus was conducted on 26. March 2025 for observational studies reporting blast injuries in civilian and military populations of all ages. Studies were clustered by explosion type - Part 1 IED and multiple/unspecified explosives. A narrative data synthesis was performed. Report

Background: Musculoskeletal trauma involving the lower extremities is an unfortunately prevalent injury pattern in contemporary warfare, and the secondary health conditions (SHCs) associated with these injuries remain largely unexplored. Methods: U.S. Service members (SMs) with combat-related lower extremity injuries between 2004 and 2014 were categorized into primary amputation (PA), limb salvage (LS), and non-threatened limb trauma (NTLT) cohorts. The LS cohort was further divided into those with secondary amputation (LS-SA) and those without (LS-NA). The prevalence and incidence of 12 SHCs

PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the incidence of stroke in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) versus high-income countries (HICs) in critically ill patients with COVID-19 and its impact on in-hospital mortality.
METHODS: International observational study conducted in 43 countries. Stroke and mortality incidence rates and rate ratios (IRR) were calculated per admitted days using Poisson regression. Inverse probability weighting (IPW) was used to address the HICs vs. LMICs imbalance for confounders.
RESULTS: 23,738 patients [20,511(86.4 %) HICs vs. 3,227(13.6 %) LMICs] were included. The inc

OBJECTIVES: Stroke has been reported in observational series as a frequent complication of coronavirus disease 2019, but more information is needed regarding stroke prevalence and outcomes. We explored the prevalence and outcomes of acute stroke in an international cohort of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 who required ICU admission.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected database.
SETTING: A registry of coronavirus disease 2019 patients admitted to ICUs at over 370 international sites was reviewed for patients diagnosed with acute stroke during their stay.

EndoVascular and Hybrid Trauma Management (EVTM) has been recently introduced in the treatment of severe pelvic ring injuries. This multimodal method of hemorrhage management counts on several strategies such as the REBOA (resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta). Few data exist on the use of REBOA in patients with a severely injured pelvic ring. The ABO (aortic balloon occlusion) Trauma Registry is designed to capture data for all trauma patients in hemorrhagic shock where management includes REBOA placement. Among all patients included in the ABO registry, 72 patients prese

U.S. service members are at risk of acquiring malaria infection when they are located in endemic areas because of long-term duty assignments, participation in shorter-term contingency operations, or personal travel. The number of malaria cases among U.S. military service members in 2015 (n=30) was the lowest annual count in at least 20 years and follows 3 previous years of greatly reduced incidence. The relatively low numbers of cases during 2012-2015 mainly reflect decreases in cases acquired in Afghanistan as the number of troops who served in Afghanistan sharply diminished in those years. A

Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between depression and temporomandibular disorders (TMD), but the conclusions remain vague. The aim of this study was to examine the causal effect between depression and TMD.The reporting of this study conforms to the STROBE statement. In this retrospective cohort study, all samples were recruited from a representative subdataset of 1 million insured persons for the year 2005 Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, who were randomly selected from all beneficiaries enrolled in the National Health Insurance program of Taiwan. We used a propensi

U.S. service members are at risk of acquiring malaria infection when they are present in endemic areas because of long term duty assignments, participation in shorter term contingency operations, or personal travel. The numbers of cases among service members in 2012 (n=40) and 2013 (n=30) were the lowest reported during the past ten years. In 2013 over one-third of cases were attributed to service in Afghanistan (n=11) and six cases were linked to Africa. Nine cases were caused by Plasmodium vivax; eight cases were caused by P. falciparum; and one-third were reported as "unspecified" malaria.

BACKGROUND: Management of war-related pancreatic injuries is challenging with potential for associated concomitant injuries and complications.
METHODS: Retrospective record review of patients treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center sustaining pancreatic injury during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2003 to 2009 was carried out.
RESULTS: Pancreatic injuries occurred in 31 of 522 (7%) patients, with the average age of 28 (range 19-54). Mechanism of injury included gunshot (68%), blast injuries (23%), and blunt injuries (10%). Distal pancreatic injuries were treated with distal pa

U.S. service members are at risk of malaria when they are assigned to endemic areas (e.g., Korea), participate in operations in endemic areas (e.g., Afghanistan, Africa) and visit malarious areas during personal travel. In 2012, 38 service members were reported with malaria, fewer than in any of the past nine years. Nearly two-thirds of cases were presumably acquired in Afghanistan (n=24) and seven cases were considered acquired in Africa. The majority of cases were caused by P. vivax and nearly one-third were reported as "unspecified" malaria. Malaria was diagnosed/reported from 25 different

OBJECTIVE: To show the underlying and external causes of death and selected characteristics of those killed in the war in Croatia between March 1991 and December 1992.
DESIGN: Analysis of 4339 fatalities recorded on two national mortality statistics documents that specified war operations as the cause of death: a demography mortality statistical form and a death certificate.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The frequency of clinical causes of death and their association with methods of wounding, length of survival, and attendant diagnoses.
RESULTS: Half of those killed were men aged 21 to 35 years. A
