Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC)-induced neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) causes significant economic losses to the cattle industry; therefore, understanding its antibiotic resistance is crucial for developing targeted prevention and treatment strategies. However, reports on antibiotic resistance in bovine ETEC are currently limited. This study conducted whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing on ETEC F5- and F5-F41-positive strains isolated from neonatal calf diarrhea samples in Inner Mongolia, China. The results showed that both ETEC F5- and ETEC F5-F41-posi

Background:Klebsiella species are a leading cause of Gram-negative bacteremia associated with nosocomial infections. They exhibit higher antimicrobial resistance compared to other Enterobacterales, emphasizing their role as a "sentinel organism". While the impact of inappropriate empiric therapy has been studied, data specific to Klebsiella bacteremia are limited due to small sample sizes. This study aims to provide high-resolution data on Klebsiella bacteremia and assess the impact of appropriate empirical therapy on clinical outcomes. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients w

Multidrug-resistantant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major public health concern necessitating new antimicrobials. There are new antimicrobials available with activity against MDR-P. aeruginosa, but there is a lack of robust evidence synthesis to guide clinical decision-making for patients with infections caused by MDR-P. aeruginosa. This study, which was supported by Merck & Co., Inc., aimed to evaluate the real-world effectiveness of ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T) compared to other commonly used therapies (aminoglycosides/polymyxins and ceftazidime/avibactam [CZA]) among adults with MDR-P.

The implementation of pharmacogenetics in Spain has experienced a significant boost in the last year, driven by the update of the genetic services portfolio of the National Health System, the national Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) biomarker database and the development and update of clinical guidelines by scientific societies and expert groups. However, the scope of this implementation is quite limited in the pediatric population because most studies do not include children, which in turn means that, in many cases, guidelines do not specify what to do in this population. This artic

Subcutaneous antibiotic administration is increasingly recognized as a valuable alternative to intravenous therapy in selected clinical contexts. It is particularly advantageous for patients with poor venous access, frail or cachectic individuals, and in outpatient or palliative care settings, when oral options are not feasible. Subcutaneous delivery of antibiotics with predominantly time-dependent activity, particularly β-lactams (eg ceftriaxone, ertapenem) and glycopeptides (teicoplanin), allows attainment of therapeutic pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) targets comparable to intraveno

Roseomonas mucosa is an opportunistic bacterium found in clinical and environmental samples that primarily affects immunocompromised patients. Treatment is challenging owing to the lack of standardized susceptibility testing methods, breakpoints, and variable antimicrobial resistance profiles published. This study evaluated different antimicrobial susceptibility testing approaches and searched for new insights into resistance mechanisms, especially against third-generation cephalosporins. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of a panel of 17 R. mucosa strains were analyzed using disk diffusio

Phytophthora spp. are devastating plant pathogens causing significant economic losses in agriculture, but unlike true fungi, oomycetes have cell walls composed predominantly of cellulose and glucans, with little to no detectable chitin. Despite this, one to two putative chitin synthase (Chs) genes are present in Phytophthora spp. suggesting a functional role in its biology. In this study, we characterized the single chitin synthase of P. infestans (PiChs) to better understand its function and explore its potential as a target for novel fungicidal treatments. Unlike typical chitin synthases tha

BACKGROUND: Ready-to-eat (RTE) foods are popular fast-foods due to their convenience and affordability. However, they pose huge public health risks due to the presence of antibiotic-resistant and virulent pathogens. Nevertheless, such data is sparse in Nigeria where RTE food consumption is widespread. This study determined antibiotic susceptibility patterns, and identified antibiotic resistance and virulence genes in bacteria from 199 RTE food samples (aadun, biscuits, bread, eko, kokoro and shawarma) vended within Lagos State, Nigeria. Bacteria were recovered on nutrient agar and MacConkey ag

Lactobacilli are Gram-positive, facultatively aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that are a normal part of the human microbiota and rarely cause infections in immunocompetent hosts. Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus rhamnosus are the most common human pathogens within this genus and are also frequently used in probiotics. Both species are inherently resistant to vancomycin, and penicillin-sometimes in combination with aminoglycosides-remains the primary treatment for infections caused by these organisms. Management becomes particularly challenging in patients with severe penicillin allergies, su

Aminoglycosides have long been considered essential agents in P. aeruginosa chemotherapy; however, resistance is on the rise. Glutamate is a crucial molecule for all living organisms, serving a fundamental function in various metabolic activities. A deeper comprehension of metabolic flux may facilitate effective therapeutic strategies for the eradication of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. In this work, we aim to investigate a novel approach of amino acid-antibiotic adjuvant to potentiate activity of existing therapeutics through a low-toxicity adjuvant strategy offering lower risk of unwa

We describe, for the first time, the presence and characterization of CTX-M-15 and OXA-9 in two Haemophilus influenzae strains: PTHi-14525 (CTX-M-15) from Portugal and HUB-HI042681 (OXA-9) from Spain. Multidrug-resistant PTHi-14525 carried blaCTX-M-15 (two copies) and blaTEM-1 in an ICEHpaHUB5-like element. HUB-HI042681, resistant to β-lactams and aminoglycosides, carried a novel ICEHinHUB1. These findings highlight the genomic plasticity and expanded resistome of H. influenzae, raising concerns about treatment and emphasizing the need for continuous genomic surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Kanamycin, an aminoglycoside, is an effective broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent against bacterial infections. However, the clinical efficacy of aminoglycosides has been overshadowed by the emergence of resistance mechanisms involving enzyme-mediated covalent modifications. Aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferases (ANTs) inactivate aminoglycosides via AMP group transfer. Elucidating their molecular mechanisms and identifying effective inhibitors are critical for combating antimicrobial resistance.
METHODS: Exiguobacterium sp. PL221A was isolated from hospital sewage under selection
