Patients with struma have to submit a complete ENT-examination, audiometry included, indispensible for operative indication or contra-indication. The usual labor-parameters, the indication for operative therapy, drugs, and radiological measures are mentioned briefly. The drug-prophylaxis must be continued through the whole life. Reverse T3 (r-T3) was measured in unextracted human plasma under different clinical conditions. The mean normal concentration was 0.20 ng/ml. In thyreotoxic patients r-T3 was elevated in the majority of the cases, however, it was normal in three cases of T3-toxicoses. Thyrectomized patients during different hormon substitution showed r-T3 levels corresponding to the T4 concentrations measured. Patients with severe chronic illnesses and low T3 showed normal to considerably elevated r-T3 levels. According to these results r-T3 is not of additional value in the diagnosis of thyroid disorders.

Out of more than 5200 struma resections 2.2% were treated because of thyroid carcinoma. Over a 12 year' period records of 117 patients were analysed. Treatment consisted in radical thyroidectomy, radioactive iodine or radiation therapy and hormone-substitution. Differentiated carcinomas were observed more frequently, primarily extended disease decreased. The mean 5 year survival rate of differentiated tumours was 90%. Fourteen cases of primary congenital hypothyroidism were studied and separated for the analysis purpose into two groups. The audiometric findings on 23 patients with diquited hypothyroidism for a minimum of 4 months to a maximum of 20 years are presented. We examined 56 patients with latent or clinically manifest hypothyroidism and 18 patients with acute athyreosis as a control group. We were especially interested in the localization and extent of hearing abnormalities. 45% of the patients with chronic hypothyroidism showed a hearing loss. In our study of the thyroid function, the methodological aspects and clinical significance of TSH, T4, T3 and their respective free fractions (FT4 and FT3), are examined. The RIA of TSH is the best for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism and also for the evaluation of the effect of thyroid hormone substitution therapy. This, united with T4 and T3 assay, allows a total evaluation of the thyroid state. The new method, recently introduced, for direct assay of free fractions, using a chromatographic separation of Sephadex LH 20, is extremely useful for follow-up of patients with thyroid disfunction.

The influence of positions 11 and 24 on hypocalcaemic potency and duration of action was examined. These positions are respectively occupied by threonine and glutamine in HCT, but by the basic amino acids lysine and arginine in SCT.
