Hemodynamics and myocardial muscle mechanics have been studied in 22 euthyroid and 60 hypothyroid cats in which experimental hypothyroidism has been produced by thyroidectomy 61 days prior to the examination. Left ventricular to body weight ratio was altered due to a decrease in left ventricular weight and an increase in body weight. A woman of 30 with Simmonds--Sheehan syndrome is described that developed after delivery by vacuum-extraction of the fetus, due to powerless labour. The clinical picture was dominated by suprarenal cortical insufficiency, manifested with pains in the abdomen, vomiting, hypotonia and severe asthenic-adynamic syndrome. The serum concentration of thyroxine and triiodothyronine, measured by a radioimmunoassay technique, was followed during replacement therapy of l-thyroxine in 10 totally thyroidectomized patients in order to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the assay for the estimation of the optimal replacement dose. Myeloperoxidase, H2O2, and a halide constitute a potent antimicrobial system. A cytotoxic effect of this system on a line of mouse ascitic lymphoma cells (LSTRA) is demonstrated here using four different assay systems: 51Cr release, trypan blue exclusion, inhibition of glucose C-1 oxidation, and loss of oncogenicity for mice. The substitution of thyrectomized patients with carcinoma of the thyroid with L-thyroxin has advantages compared to a substitution with triiodothyronine, 200 mug T4/d are sufficient to obtain a negative TRH test in most patients. In hypothyroidism induced by radioiodine the activity of cystathionine synthase and the concentration of L-cytathionine in cerebrum and cerebellum of developing rat decreased markedly. The amount of taurine was significantly higher in cerebral and cerebellar tissue of hypothyroid rats than in corresponding parts of normal rat brain. Early substitution therapy with L-thyroxine corrected these changes.

Eighty-four term newborn infants without goiter and 45 newborn infants with congenital goiter were studied with regard to thyroid function. The radiologic development of the femoral and tibial epiphyses was evaluated in those with goiter. Fifty-eight percent of the patients had retarded bone age, markedly elevated TSH levels, elevated TBI, decreased total T4I, and decreased PBI values.
