Healthcare Costs Associated With Anabolic Steroid Use: A Cohort Study.

Anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) use is associated with various health risks, yet its impact on healthcare expenditures remains insufficiently explored. This nationwide register-based study examined direct healthcare costs among 1183 males sanctioned for AAS use in Denmark between 2006 and 2017, compared with 59 150 age- and sex-matched controls from the general population. Healthcare costs were calculated across primary care, hospital services, and prescription drugs, with up to 10 years of follow-up. AAS users had significantly higher total healthcare costs, with a mean excess of 3299 euros

Erectile dysfunction and related variables due to anabolic steroid use. A review of reviews.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Anabolic androgenic steroids are synthetic substances that mimic testosterone, promoting increased strength and muscle mass. Although they were initially used to achieve an increase in sports performance, nowadays most users are not professional athletes. Their use can cause various adverse effects, but despite these, they continue to be used to improve aesthetic and performance aspects. The purpose of this review of reviews was to examine the effects of anabolic androgenic steroids on male erectile function and related variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systemati

Double burden: Synergistic effects of menopause and obesity on high paraben exposure-induced relative androgen predominance in women.

Past research on the health impacts of parabens has largely focused on susceptible groups like pregnant women. However, postmenopausal women, due to profound hormonal shifts, are also a sensitive yet underrecognized population. To evaluate paraben exposure patterns, we analyzed pooled urine samples from 6523 Chinese adults. Major paraben congeners (MeP, EtP, PrP, BuP, BzP) were measured to examine paraben exposure of different sexes and age groups. These descriptive data revealed distinctly elevated paraben burdens among women in midlife and older groups. To investigate the endocrine consequen

Association of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome and endocrine abnormalities: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is a systemic endocrine and metabolic disorder that has been increasingly linked to exposure to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Although perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been implicated as potential contributors, the combined health effects of PFASs mixtures and the potential pathways linking PFAS exposure to endocrine abnormalities remain incompletely understood. METHODS: In this hospital-based case-control study, 109 women with PMOS and 96 healthy controls were recruited. Serum concentrations

Testosterone and anabolic androgenic steroids: Impact on acute kidney injury.

The synthesis of testosterone and its modifications have allowed its use in treating medical conditions of hormonal deficiency. Currently, the most common use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS)-synthetic testosterone derivatives-is for purposes other than medical treatment. Various complications have been reported among AAS users, with cardiovascular and hepatic complications being the best documented; direct renal toxicity is less well understood. AAS-associated acute kidney injury (AKI-AAS) is an emerging entity, resulting from the increased number of reported cases and greater use of the

As per Internet world stats, with 560 million Internet users, India is the second largest online market in the world, ranked only behind China. Out of these 560 million Internet users in India, almost 375 million people use social media. These facts are enough to highlight the deep penetration of Internet and social media in Indian society. This deep penetration of social media among the Indian workers has further more deepened in the era of COVID-19. The employees are working from home, so they are more prone to use mobile and social media platforms for non-work-related purposes. It is a prov

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Newer formulations of oral testosterone undecanoate: development and liver side effects.

INTRODUCTION: Testosterone deficiency is a clinical disorder due to either failure of the testes to produce testosterone or failure of the hypothalamus or pituitary to produce sufficient gonadotropins. Previous formulations of oral testosterone therapy, particularly methyltestosterone, have been associated with adverse liver effects. Many different routes of testosterone delivery have been developed, each with their own administrative benefits and challenges. Newer formulations of oral testosterone undecanoate (TU) provide a convenient administration option, although their use has been limited

Shape-controlled asymmetric bowl-like PDA@Au substrates for sensitive SERS detection of anabolic androgenic steroids.

The widespread accumulation of androgenic steroid endocrine disruptors in water and food has garnered increasing attention due to their significant risks to ecosystems and human health. These steroids, which cannot be completely eliminated, highlight the urgent need for advanced detection technologies. In this study, we present a novel emulsion-induced interface-anisotropic assembly strategy to synthesize bowl-like mesoporous polydopamine (PDA) particles, which exhibit high sensitivity in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. In-situ reduction of chloroauric acid leads to the for

Anabolic-androgen steroids: A possible independent risk factor to Cardiovascular, Kidney and Metabolic Syndrome.

Millions of individuals make illicit use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), remaining a public health issue. It often leads to detrimental effects, including cardiovascular and renal diseases, besides hormonal and metabolic imbalances. The objective of this review is to emphasize the contribution of oxidative stress and inflammation to these effects and connect the findings of experimental animal studies with the alterations found in clinical contexts, in AAS users. The study's results showed that AAS promotes a redox disruption and a pro-inflammatory state on organs that are involved in i

The world's first anabolic-androgenic steroid testing trial: A two-phase pilot combining chemical analysis, results dissemination and community feedback.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The clandestine production and distribution of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) poses health risks due to the uncertainty of their contents. This study aimed to test the chemical content of AAS samples and provide aggregate results back to the community, exploring how these results influenced usage decisions and risk management. DESIGN: A mixed-methods approach was used, combining chemical analysis of AAS samples with qualitative interviews. Participants submitted samples for testing, and the results were later shared with them. Semi-structured interviews explored parti

Development, dissemination and community response towards the first community notice regarding misrepresented illicit anabolic-androgenic steroids in circulation in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Drug alerts aimed at both people who use drugs and health workers help to prevent acute harms from unpredictable illicit drug markets and by equipping health workers to handle unusual drug events and share vital information with service users. However, there has never been an alert produced for anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), an important class of illicit drugs. We report on the development, implementation and community receptivity of the first-ever AAS community drug alert. METHODS: Based on findings from samples collected during the first month of an AAS checking trial con

Cardiovascular Disease in Anabolic Androgenic Steroid Users.

BACKGROUND: Use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) is associated with increased mortality, and case reports have suggested that some of these deaths are due to cardiovascular disease. However, the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in AAS users is still relatively unexplored. This study aimed to measure the incidence of cardiovascular disease in male AAS users and to compare these rates with those of a cohort from the general population matched by age and sex. METHODS: Men sanctioned in an antidoping program for AAS use in Danish fitness centers between 2006 and 2018 were included and

Prevalence and Correlates of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid Use in Australian Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Within recent years, there has been a notable lack of research examining the factors associated with adolescent use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) in Australia, meaning information regarding risk factors of Australian adolescent AAS use is outdated and potentially inaccurate. METHODS: To address this omission, the present study examined the prevalence and correlates of adolescent (aged 11 to 19 years) AAS use within the EveryBODY study, a large-scale representative survey of adolescents' disordered eating behaviours and body image concerns, involving 5071 adolescents acros

Anabolic-androgenic steroid use disorder: case for recognition as a substance use disorder with specific diagnostic criteria.

Approximately one in three people who use anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) develop dependence, characterised by both psychiatric and somatic symptoms. Despite this, AAS use disorder (AASUD) is not distinctly recognised in the latest versions of either the ICD or DSM, impeding both clinical care and research progress. It is clear that AASUD shares many features and correlates with substance use disorders (SUDs) that have specific diagnostic criteria in these classification systems, such as stimulants or opioids. We aim to outline the overlap between AASUD and more 'typical' SUDs as well as h

Mapping the pathway to anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) use.

This short communication introduces a model for the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), with body dissatisfaction as the central factor, shaped by sociocultural, psychological, and behavioral influences. Media-driven body ideals, gender, and sexual orientation may significantly influence body image, while low self-esteem and certain personality traits also contribute to dissatisfaction. Disordered eating behaviors (DEB) and intense physical exercise act as indirect contributors, particularly in fitness communities, where "conventional" body modification methods (i.e., exercise and diet)
