BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) have been associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). AAS abuse leads to a remarkable decrease in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) plasma concentration, which could be a key factor in the atherosclerotic process. Moreover, not only the concentration of HDL, but also its functionality, plays a pivotal role in CAD. We tested the functionality of HDL by cholesterol efflux and antioxidant capacity. We also evaluated the prevalence of CAD in AAS users.
METHODS: Twenty strength-trained AAS users (AASU) age 29 ± 5 yr, 20 age-matched strength-t

We hypothesized that supraphysiological administration of the anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) like testosterone (TEST) and nandrolone decanoate (NAND) might differentially affect synaptic and extrasynaptic components of mitochondrial bioenergetics, thereby resulting in memory impairment. Oil (VEH), NAND or TEST (15 mg/Kg) were daily administered to male CF-1 albino mice for 19-days. We evaluated in the synaptosomes and extrasynaptic mitochondria, Ca2+ influx/efflux, membrane potential ΔѰm, oxidative respiratory states, dehydrogenases activity, H2O2 production, Tau phosphorylation, and spati

Growing analytical challenges have arisen for the detection of misuse of androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS) in athletes the last years. Therefore, consideration of additional indirect markers can substantially aid the efforts to detect AAS abuse in athletes. Moreover, this approach can also help physicians to suspect AAS abuse when treating athletes. Laboratory markers highly indicative of AAS abuse in athletes include the considerable downregulation of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, elevation of haematocrit or serum γ-glutamyl transpeptidase levels and for males reduced serum levels of

Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic compounds prohibited due to their performance-enhancing characteristics. The use of these substances is known to cause health-related issues, which highlights the importance of being able to evaluate the scale of consumption by the general population. However, most available research on the analysis of anabolic steroids is focused on animals and athletes in connection with doping. The potential of wastewater-based epidemiology as an intelligence tool for the assessment of community level use of anabolic steroids is presented herein. A liquid chromatog

Anabolic steroids have a long history of abuse in amateur and professional athletics. However, their interaction with training and the resulting effects on body composition and tissue adaptation, relying on a concert of factors and pathways, remain under investigation. This study aims at investigating the changes of body composition and the expression of selected genes and pathways essential for this adaptation process. Therefore, male wistar rats were treated with the anabolic steroid metandienone in two groups (n = 16; metandienone, metandienone + exercise) alongside with control groups (n =

RATIONALE: Illicit use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has grown into a serious public health concern throughout the Western World. AAS use is associated with adverse medical, psychological, and social consequences. Around 30% of AAS users develop a dependence syndrome with sustained use despite adverse side effects. AAS dependence is associated with a high frequency of intra- and interpersonal problems, and it is central to identify factors related to the development and maintenance of dependence.
METHODS: The present study investigated the ability to recognize emotion from biological

BACKGROUND: Novel male-based contraceptives are needed to broaden family planning choices. A progestin, Nestorone® (Nes) gel, plus a testosterone (T) gel suppresses sperm concentrations to levels associated with effective contraception in normal men. However, administration of two gels on different parts of the body daily is impractical.
OBJECTIVE: Compare the effectiveness of daily application of a single, combined 8.3 mg Nes-62.5 mg T gel (Nes-T) vs. 62.7 mg T gel to suppress serum FSH and LH concentrations to ≤1.0 IU/L (a threshold associated with suppression of sperm concentrations to ≤1

BACKGROUND: Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are widely implicated in gynecomastia development. Surgery is the definitive treatment for cases persisting after cessation of AAS use. Currently, the relevance of AAS use to the surgical approach of gynecomastia has not been well explored. This study aims to compare patient characteristics, surgical outcomes, and surgical management of gynecomastia correction in AAS users versus nonusers.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed with patients who underwent bilateral gynecomastia reduction surgery between January 2005 and August 2015 b

BACKGROUND: Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are used to increase muscle strength and improve appearance, but users also carry the risk of developing physical and mental health problems. In Norway, the substance use disorder treatment system provides health care to this patient group, but few AAS users have sought such treatment. Therefore, a service was created to inform AAS users and next of kin of potential negative consequences and their treatment options. This study describes health problems, motivations for AAS cessation, and treatment desires among AAS users.

A constant topic reported in the lay press is the effect of sex hormones on athletic performance and their abuse by athletes in their effort to enhance their performance or to either boost or sidestep their hard, protracted, and demanding training regimens. However, an issue that it is almost never mentioned is that the athletic training itself affects the endogenous production of androgens and estrogens, while also being affected by them. Among sports, soccer is a particularly demanding activity, soccer players needing to possess high levels of endurance, strength, and both aerobic and anaero

Background and Objectives: Anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) are a complex group of molecules that include both steroidal androgens and synthetic compounds, derived from testosterone. AASs are commonly used to support pharmacological therapy in cases of primary or secondary hypogonadism, major burns, and neoplastic cachexia. Their prolonged and supra-physiological consumption can provoke several adverse effects on various organs and systems. Among these, the physiopathological mechanisms that induce neuropsychiatric disorders related to AAS abuse are poorly known. For this reason, the propos

BACKGROUND: Since there is a paucity of research on support for people using Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS), we aimed to identify and synthesise the available evidence in this field. Gaining an understanding of the support both accessed and wanted by recreational AAS users will be of use to professionals who provide services to intravenous substance users and also to those working in the fields of public health and social care, with the aim to increase engagement of those using AAS.

Latino sexual minority men (SMM) have elevated anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) misuse in comparison to their heterosexual and non-Latino peers. Within a gender role framework, desire to present as masculine through heightened muscularity may be related to increased AAS misuse. To assess the association between AAS misuse and a culturally-distinct masculinity, this study examined the relationship of two aspects of machismo, traditional machismo and caballerismo, with AAS misuse in the past month. Participants were 141 young adult Latino SMM recruited from the San Diego area. Participants comp

BACKGROUND: The use of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids (AAS) has been associated with increased aggressiveness and violent behavior. We therefore investigated the proposed correlation between the use of AAS and criminality while controlling for important socio-economics covariates and for psychiatric comorbidity.
METHODS: The primary endpoints were prison sentences, and time to first prison sentence. A retrospective matched cohort study design consisting of 545 males, who tested positive for AAS in Danish gyms during the period January 3, 2006 to January 31, 2017. They were matched with 5450 ran

Carbon isotope ratio (CIR) confirmation is one of the most complex and delicate analyses in the doping control field, due to the nature of the molecules to be confirmed, normally present in urinary samples as a consequence of an endogenous production. The requirements for method validation established by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have been pushing the accredited laboratories to improve their methods. The choice of the method is always a cost benefit ratio involving a hard-working and time-consuming analysis and the guarantee of reporting of reliable results. This work presents the me

OBJECTIVE: Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) represents a group of synthetic testosterone derivatives that play an important role in clinical treatment. These drugs are widely abused among the general public to increase lean weight and improve athletic performance. It has been reported that AAS use can produce many adverse effects, especially the occurrence of cardiovascular risk. Although there are many related studies, there has been no consensus on AAS use and cardiovascular risk. The present study was to review the effect of AAS on the cardiovascular system.
