As revealed by electron microscopy and electron diffraction, the physical state of ferric hydroxide micelles contained in iron-dextran, saccharated iron oxide, and hydrous ferric oxide ("ferric hydroxide") differs notably from the state of the ferric hydroxide in ferritin or hemosiderin. By virtue of this difference one can trace the intracellular transformation of colloidal iron, administered parenterally, into ferritin and hemosiderin. One hour after intraperitoneal injection of iron-dextran or saccharated iron oxide into mice, characteristic deposits were present in splenic macrophages, in

Intravascular precipitates, comprised at least in part of iron, formed regularly in rabbits given one or more injections of a saccharated iron oxide preparation intravenously, and these lodged in numerous capillaries throughout the body, particularly those of the lungs and kidneys. Large numbers of the brownish precipitates remained in the capillaries of the renal glomeruli during the first few days following injection of the iron, but most of them disappeared after 5 to 7 days, with only moderate amounts of brown pigment remaining in the endothelial cells of the renal glomeruli. Signs of acut

Fractions of bovine white matter, prepared by the methods of Folch and Lees, were studied for chemical composition and for their ability to produce experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in rabbits. Evaluation of the disease and of the lesions in animals injected with the more active fractions at several dose levels permitted comparison of the antigenic activity of these materials. When tissue was fractionated by the methods of Folch and Lees, antigenic activity was found in the chloroform-methanol extract but not in the denatured tissue residue. This activity was traced to proteolipides A an

The anatomical and histochemical alterations in rat kidneys after the parenteral administration of uranium nitrate [UO(2)(NO(3))(2).6H(2)O] have been studied. The histological effects produced by this agent over a wide range of dose levels were nearly identical in character and differed principally in their speed of evolution. The deposition of calcium always began at foci in the cytoplasm of the cells of the proximal convoluted tubules of the inner cortex. It remained intracellular until the cell boundaries were destroyed. Deposits of calcium could be found before any other cellular damage co

While iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia in infants, requiring specific treatment by administration of iron, there are other causes which require treatment equally specific. Anemia due to a nutritional deficiency can be improved only by providing the needed nutriment in sufficient quantity. Two case reports are presented. One is of megaloblastic anemia in an infant, which was treated with a variety of vitamin preparations before administration of folic acid produced improvement. The other report is of anemia due to iron deficiency treated successfully with ferrous sulfate in a dosage

The newer hematinics are merely refinements of preexisting forms of treatment, but they have aided particularly in a better understanding of the deficiency states. The intrinsic factor of Castle has not been isolated from the gastric juice, and the interrelationships of this substance with the extrinsic factor (vitamin B(12)) and folic acid have not been defined at this time. Vitamin B(12) appears to be the active principle of refined liver extract and alone is probably adequate treatment for pernicious anemia. The other varieties of megaloblastic anemia may result from deficiency of vitamin B

1. Our data indicate that the effectiveness of whole liver in the treatment of nutritional anemia in rats induced by a milk diet is directly proportional to its available iron and copper content. The other constituents in liver are not needed for maximum hemoglobin regeneration on a diet of milk, iron, copper, and manganese. 2. Commercial preparations of liver products with iron or iron and copper vary greatly in their hemoglobin-regenerating efficiency in rats with nutritional anemia. The variation is correlated directly with the iron and copper content of the preparation. When the copper-iro

In the description of the condition of benign aplastic anaemia in pigs, attention is directed, among other things, to changes in the bone-marrow which seem of fundamental importance in understanding normal erythrogenesis. It is possible that an indirect van den Bergh reaction can be converted into an immediate direct by controlling the H-ion concentration suitably, either with buffer solutions or with less dissociable acids, such as acetic, used in preparing the van den Bergh reagent. The question of the interpretation of direct and indirect reactions, therefore, would seem to be reopened.Follo

Ten varieties of North American shellfish were examined for the occurrence of Cristispira in their styles. A cristispira was found in various numbers in Ostrea virginiana, Venus mercenaria, and Modiola modiolus, but none in Ensis americana, Mya arenaria, Mactra solidissima, Pecten irradians, Mytilus edulis, Fulgur canaliculatus, or Nassa obsoleta. Of 298 oysters, only 128 showed the crystalline styles, in which cristispiras were present in 99. Active cristispiras were found in 59 styles only and degenerated forms in the remaining 40. In 110 clams (Venus mercenaria) 70 styles were found, and on

There seems to be very little doubt but that luciferase is a protein or so closely associated with proteins that their removal destroys its characteristic properties. The particular group of proteins to which it belongs may be arrived at by a process of exclusion, and only the group of albumins has properties which agree completely with those of luciferase. Dubois believes Pholas luciferase to be an oxidizing enzyme similar to the oxydones of Battelli and Stern because it is readily destroyed by fat solvents such as chloroform, strong alcohol, etc. He has detected iron in a luciferase solution
