Amine- and hydroxyl-functionalization of iron nanoparticles for tailoring the properties of Fmoc-FF-based magnetic hydrogels: interfacial design toward biocompatible materials.

In this work, we propose a surface functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with hydroxyl and/or amino groups by the use of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and its mixture with other functionalization agents, bearing amine groups, namely, amine-terminated PEG (NH2-PEG) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The proposed functionalization method enabled the preparation of MNPs that were nontoxic to human skin cells and could accelerate or delay human blood coagulation, which may be useful for designing materials with controlled hemostatic properties. Subsequently, these nanoparticles wer

TMPRSS2 inhibitors with broad-spectrum efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 (JN.1) and influenza A (H1N1) viruses protect mice from influenza A infection.

Human TMPRSS2 is a type II transmembrane serine protease and an essential host factor for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus (IAV H1N1) infections. It facilitates the cleavage of viral surface glycoproteins, which are required for membrane fusion. This importance makes it an attractive target for host-directed antiviral therapies. We previously identified N-0385 and N-0920 as nanomolar TMPRSS2 inhibitors and demonstrated their antiviral potency against several SARS-CoV-2 variants. Here, we screened another twelve N-0385/N-0920 analogs with improved pharmacokinetics. Compounds 9 and 10 showed str

Acquired Methemoglobinemia Following Herbal Decoction Ingestion Presenting With Refractory Hypoxemia and Associated Generalized Seizure: A Case Report.

Acquired methemoglobinemia is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening disorder characterized by oxidation of hemoglobin iron into the ferric state, resulting in impaired oxygen delivery and functional anemia. Patients may present with cyanosis, persistent hypoxemia, and discordance between pulse oximetry and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO₂). Although medications and industrial chemicals are well-recognized causes, herbal and traditional remedies remain underreported aetiologies. A 35-year-old man presented with a sudden-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizure followed by persistent hypoxe

Iron Pill Aspiration in the Age of Polypharmacy: Time to Rethink the Risks.

Iron pill aspiration represents an underrecognized but clinically significant cause of airway injury, particularly in the context of aging populations and increasing polypharmacy. While foreign body aspiration is commonly associated with food particles and small objects, medicinal pills such as ferrous sulfate present a distinct risk due to their corrosive biochemical properties. Oxidative injury resulting from ferrous ion conversion can cause mucosal necrosis, airway inflammation, and long-term complications, including bronchial stenosis and lobar collapse. Diagnosis is often delayed because

Functional Repurposing of Magnetic Nanoparticle-Assisted Hyperthermia for Immune Cell Labelling and Tracking.

Immune cell therapies show promise in hematologic malignancies and are becoming more effective in solid tumors like lungs, melanoma, and colorectal cancers. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are mostly used as tracers via magnetic particle imaging(MPI) or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), and heat mediators to monitor and kill cancer cells via magnetic hyperthermia (MHT). Here, we apply a mild-MHT protocol (38-41°C/60 min) as a new means to boost MNPs uptake by immune cells under a harmless alternating magnetic field (AMF). Various MNPs formulations, including iron oxide or zinc-ferrite composition

Colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode detection of norfloxacin in food samples using Fe/Mn-MOF/CeO2 nanozyme with high peroxidase-like activity.

A dual-metal metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanozyme, Fe/Mn-MOF/CeO2, with high peroxidase-like activity was successfully synthesized via a stepwise solvothermal-hydrothermal combined liquid-phase composite strategy. A colorimetric/fluorescence dual-mode sensing platform was fabricated for the detection of norfloxacin (NOR) in milk and honey. The material takes advantage of the synergistic electronic effect of Fe/Mn bimetallic active sites and the reversible Ce4+/Ce3+ valence cycle to remarkably enhance its peroxidase-like activity. The nanozyme can trigger the decomposition of hydrogen p

Control of sulfides in gravity sewer pipelines using coated sustained-release granules: Efficiency and mechanisms.

To address the challenges in sewer systems where continuous wastewater flow renders conventional iron salt dosing ineffective for long-term control, and where iron salts cause a sharp pH decline and structural weakening of pipelines, this study developed a coated sustained-release ferrous chloride granule (PMDI‑Fe2+). Under long‑term operation of laboratory‑scale reactors, the results showed that at a PMDI‑Fe2+ dosage of 0.045 % (w/v), the half‑maximal recovery time (RT50) of the sulfide production rate was 9 days; at a flow velocity of 0.6 m/s, iron ions were sustainably released for 45 hours

Red meat consumption: A comprehensive overview of the mechanistic evidence for the effects of oncogenes.

Epidemiological studies have recently shown a very high correlation between consumption of red meat and meat products, the most important source of protein for humans, and cancer. The molecular basis of the red meat-cancer relationship is still poorly understood. The study of heme iron and N-nitroso metabolites, derived from the digestion of red meat, as possible inducers of oxidative stress and DNA damage, which is a major culprit of carcinogenic compounds and mutagenesis, has been pioneering. However, some other factors, like the time of cooking, temperature of cooking, and the direct or ind

Heavy metal contamination and health risks incurred through fish consumption from Harike wetland, a Ramsar site in India.

Heavy metal contamination of the aquatic ecosystem is the top environmental hazard arising from industrial effluents and agricultural discharge. Humans are at high risk due to contamination of the food chain by these toxic heavy metals through bioaccumulation in fish. An assessment of muscle samples from 90 fish (n = 30 per species) using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) for heavy metals like Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in three commercially important fish species was done (Labeo rohita, Aorichthys seenghala, and Notopterus notopterus) from the Harike wetland, a Ramsar site in I

Type 2 Inflammatory Diseases: The Crossroads of Immunity and Metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Studies have revealed that macrophages play an important role in the development of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Activated macrophages can lead to a systemic inflammatory response, induce lipid peroxidation, impair membrane structure, result in injury to the liver and the other extrahepatic organs, and eventually result in multiple organ dysfunction syndrome by promoting excessive secretion of cytokines. Liver injury can further aggravate the systemic inflammatory response and increase mortality by affecting the metabolism of toxins and the release of excessive inflammatory med

Androgen-mediated DKK1 upregulation in bronchial epithelial cells suppresses Th2 response and ameliorates asthma.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the human mitochondrial genome have been suspected to play a significant role in the etiological development of mitochondrial diabetes. Detection of the 3243A>G mutation in the mitochondrial transfer RNALeu(UUR) gene (MTTL1), especially at low heteroplasmy levels, is highly desirable since it facilitates the diagnosis and subsequent management of the disease. The proportions of mutant mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can vary between tissues and are usually significantly higher in muscle than in blood, but muscle biopsies from patients with diabetes are rarely available. Multi-tissue multi-omics integration reveals tissue-specific pathways, gene networks and drug candidates for type 1 diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified loci associated with type 1 diabetes, the specific pathways and regulatory networks linking these loci to disease pathology remain largely unknown. We hypothesised that type 1 diabetes genetic risk factors disrupt tissue-specific biological pathways and gene networks that ultimately lead to beta cell loss. METHODS: We conducted a multi-tissue multi-omics analysis that integrates human GWAS data for type 1 diabetes with tissue-specific regulatory data for gene expression and gene network models across relevant tis
