This study investigated the role of duodenogastric reflux in rats after antecolic gastrojejunostomy. At the end of the study, adenocarcinoma was present in 43 per cent, dysplasia in 14 per cent and intestinal metaplasia in 43 per cent of animals. No such changes were found in control rats. The systemic IgG response to Helicobacter pylori was examined in 70 patients with gastric cancer. H pylori IgG antibodies were assayed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and serological recognition of H pylori antigens was characterised by western blotting. An image processing technique to extract tubular and nuclear areas from histological specimens stained with hematoxylin was established. Two indices representing tubular density and nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio of glands were examined in intestinal-type tumor of the stomach. A silver technique for nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) was applied to sections from 156 gastric biopsies and gastrectomy specimens. These included normal controls, normal gastric mucosa from carcinoma-bearing stomachs, intestinal metaplasia types I and III, dysplasia and carcinoma. Forty-seven biopsies of gastric mucosa and Barrett esophagus from 32 patients were studied with the argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region method. Twenty-two biopsies were gastric and 25 esophageal. Using high-resolution ultrasound such as is employed, for example, in endoscopic ultrasonography, the walls of hollow organs are visualized as layered structures. The association of sebaceous gland neoplasms with visceral carcinomas, first described by Muir and Torre, has become widely recognized.
