Turn-On Terbium(III) Photoluminescence Enables Sensing of Methyl Salicylate by a Biomimetic Airborne Messenger Mechanism.

A low cost, portable optical sensing platform enables rapid and sensitive detection of methyl salicylate (MeSal) in unprocessed samples. The sensing assay is based on a strong photoluminogenic response when MeSal forms a complex with a terbium cation (Tb3+) in aqueous buffer. The assay employs an airtight three-well sensing chamber that allows the volatile MeSal to spontaneously diffuse out of a sample well and partition into a neighboring test well where the intense green Tb-photoluminescence is detected by the naked eye or a cell phone camera. This MeSal vapor diffusion process mimics the bi

Role of methyl salicylate and spontaneous field margin vegetation on plant-arthropod interactions to enhance biological control.

BACKGROUND: Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) play multiple roles in mediating plant-arthropod species interactions. Methyl salicylate (MeSA) is a well-known HIPV given its effectiveness in attracting parasitoids and predators and its use in biological control strategies. In addition, non-crop vegetation of field margins are important habitats that harbor natural enemies but may fail to increase biological control. Volatiles like MeSA could synergistically interact with field margin vegetation and increase biological control within crops. The present study examines through a field expe

From field to landscape: scaling-up the response of natural enemies and predation to methyl salicylate.

In response to herbivory, plants emit herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), many of which attract natural enemies of herbivores. One such HIPV, methyl salicylate (MeSA), has been deployed in agroecosystems to enhance biological control. However, the broader agroecosystem context-including field-level management and landscape complexity-can strongly influence natural enemy community dynamics. In this 2-yr study, we evaluated the interactive effects of MeSA, field-level practices (eg pesticide use and cultivar selection), and landscape complexity on natural enemy communities and their ecosy

Functional Characterization of the Methyl Esterase MES4 in Hydrolytic Activity of Methylated Phytohormones in Tea Plants Based on Multi-Omics Analysis.

This study integrated transcriptome and hormone profiling of Colletotrichum camelliae-infected tea leaves to identify the methyl esterase (MES) gene family. Genome-wide analysis identified 17 MES genes, with CsMES4 as a crucial candidate localized in the nucleus and cell membrane. Through prokaryotic expression, purification, in vitro enzymatic assays, and transient silencing experiments in tea plants, we demonstrated that CsMES4 hydrolyze methyl salicylate (MeSA), methyl indole-3-acetate (MeIAA), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) to produce salicylic acid, indole-3-acetic acid, and jasmonic acid, r

Subcytotoxic Exposure to Avobenzone and Ethylhexyl Salicylate Induces microRNA Modulation and Stress-Responsive PI3K/AKT and MAPK Signaling in Differentiated SH-SY5Y Cells.

Avobenzone (AVO) and ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) are widely used organic UV filters with distinct photochemical properties and reported biological effects. Experimental and predictive evidence suggests that some lipophilic UV filters may reach systemic circulation and potentially cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), raising concerns about possible central nervous system effects, although direct evidence for AVO and EHS remains limited. This study evaluated the effects of subcytotoxic concentrations (0.01-1 µM) of AVO and EHS on differentiated SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells, focusing on earl

Congener-resolved hazard identification of ginkgolic acids as emerging natural contaminants.

Ginkgolic acids (GAs) are alkylphenolic constituents widely present in Ginkgo biloba-derived products and plant residues that may enter environmental systems through poorly regulated consumer goods, industrial processing, and waste streams. Owing to inconsistent regulatory control and limited environmental monitoring, GAs are increasingly regarded as emerging natural contaminants. However, their congener-specific hazard profiles and mechanistic relevance to key detoxification organs remain insufficiently resolved, hindering informed hazard prioritization for environmental and public health ass

Probabilistic emissions model for organic UV filters released to recreational waters during swimming/bathing events.

A critical element for understanding measured concentrations and predicting exposure levels of UV filters (UVFs) in recreational waters relates to mass released from sunscreen products applied to skin during swimming and bathing. A probabilistic mass transfer kinetic model was developed to estimate distributions of the mass of five organic UVFs released during individual swim events with sunscreen. The model incorporates the ratios of different demographics and distributions of their total skin areas, adjusted to account for body areas to which sunscreens are not typically applied or do not co

Design, synthesis, and antibacterial efficacy of new methylene disalicylic acid/1,3,4-oxadiazole hybrids as dual inhibitors of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV.

DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes are promising candidates for dual targeting with novel antibacterial agents, lowering the risk of bacterial resistance development. A new series of methylene disalicylic acid/1,3,4-oxadiazole hybrids (5a-l) was developed as dual DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV inhibitors with antibacterial activity. The structures of the novel compounds were validated using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and elemental microanalysis. Compounds 5a-l were tested for their inhibitory effect against E. coli DNA gyrase. Compounds 5g, 5h, 5j, and 5l exhibited the highest inhibitory activity

BSMT1, SABP3, and MAT2 assemble into a ternary complex vital for methyl salicylate biosynthesis and airborne defense.

When plants encounter biotic and abiotic stresses, they emit various volatile organic compounds to communicate with nearby plants and activate airborne defense (AD). One critical compound in this process is methyl salicylate (MeSA). Previous studies have mostly examined how stress triggers the production of MeSA at the gene level. In our study, we found that MeSA plays a key role in AD during bacterial infections and determined how plants boost MeSA production through a protein complex. Infection by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 in Arabidopsis thaliana increased salicylic acid levels,

Bodyguard Interactions: A Beneficial Endophyte Triggers Emission of Methyl Salicylate in Infested Tomato Plant Mediating Attraction of a Parasitoid Wasp.

The endoparasitoid Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris is a potential candidate biocontrol agent of Phthorimaea absoluta. We previously reported that the endophyte Trichoderma asperellum M2RT4 triggers the systemic release of key phytohormones in tomato affecting the behavior and herbivory of P. absoluta. As D. gelechiidivoris uses odor cues to locate P. absoluta, we therefore investigated the chemical basis of interactions between D. gelechiidivoris, the tomato plant with and without endophyte and P. absoluta through bioassay-guided chemical analysis. Y-tube olfactometer bioassays showed that the

Influence of Conspecific Male Odour and Host Kairomones on the Behaviour of Sternochetus mangiferae, a Pest of Mangoes in Brazil and Ghana.

Sternochetus mangiferae is a pest of mangoes, occurring worldwide in regions where mangoes are cultivated. In Brazil, this insect was first detected in 2014 in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro, and since then, various measures and studies have been conducted to contain, monitor and potentially eradicate it. Semiochemicals may provide feasible targets to develop sensitive detection and monitoring tools. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate whether S. mangiferae use pheromones from conspecifics and kairomones from mango tree host in their chemical communication. The findings identify a blend of man

Pro-oxidant effect of lobaric acid as a therapeutic strategy against breast cancer: a molecular perspective.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the anticancer effects of lobaric acid (LA), a lichen acid, in MCF-7 cells. Our previous study demonstrated that LA exhibits anticancer effects by triggering apoptosis in MCF-7 cells. However, the relationship between this anticancer effect and the oxidative pathway and apoptosis mechanism has not been explained. In this study, the cytotoxic and anticancer effects of LA on MCF-7 cells were investigated through oxidative stress and thioredoxin system pathways. METHODS AND RESULTS: For this purpose, reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduced glutathione (

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry study of the composition and structure of alkyl salicylate as a detergent additive in lubricants.

The high-temperature detergency of alkyl salicylates (ASs) as lubricant detergents is influenced by their composition and molecular structure. Analysis via normal-phase liquid chromatography (LC) combined with mass spectrometry (MS) reveals that alkyl salicylic acid (ASA) primarily consists of alkylphenol (AP), monoalkyl salicylic acid (MASA), dialkyl salicylic acid (DASA), and salicylic acid (SA), with MASA being the dominant component. Using reversed-phase LC and MS identification, MASA is characterized as a mixture of homologues with varying alkyl carbon chain lengths (C14, C16, and C18), w

Chitosan modified polyacrylonitrile fiber as adsorbent for removal of sulfosalicylic acid and Congo red.

In this study, one novel CS/PAO composite was synthesized by modifying amidoximated polyacrylonitrile (PAO) fibers with chitosan (CS). The composite exhibited excellent adsorption performance for sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) and Congo red (CR). The maximum adsorption capacities reached 63.5 mg·g-1 for SSA (pH 3.07, 293 K) and 91.2 mg·g-1 for CR (pH 6.38, 313 K) at an initial concentration of 200 mg·L-1. Kinetic analysis revealed that both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models fitted the data well, suggesting a mixed mechanism involving both physical and chemical adsorption. Isotherm m

Towards an integrated molecular understanding of plant hormones.

From seed dormancy to pathogen attacks and senescence, many events in a plant's life are critically controlled by low-molecular-weight signaling molecules, called plant hormones. These master regulators include abscisic acid, auxins, brassinosteroids, cytokinins, ethylene, gibberellins, jasmonates, salicylates, and strigolactones. Years of research have unveiled multiple aspects of their biosynthesis, transport, signaling, functions, and interactions. With this knowledge, complex molecular networks have been established and refined over time in an attempt to explain how plant hormones collecti

Jasmonate before salicylate in systemic acquired resistance.

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) has long been viewed as a salicylate-driven process. Recent evidence by Gaikwad et al. reveals an earlier, jasmonate- and calcium (Ca2+)-dependent systemic phase that precedes salicylate accumulation. This temporal dynamic refines prevailing models of jasmonate-salicylate crosstalk and suggests a previously underappreciated early phase of SAR establishment.

Elucidating the Molecular Determinants of Substrate Specificity in Salicylate 1,2-Dioxygenase: A QM/MM Investigation of Salicylate and Gentisate.

Salicylate 1,2-dioxygenase (SDO), a ring-fission nonheme dioxygenase enzyme, catalyzes the regioselective oxidation of gentisic acid (GTQ) and salicylic acid (SAL) in the presence of molecular oxygen. Wild-type SDO from Pseudaminobacter salicylatoxidans exhibits higher catalytic efficiency with GTQ compared to SAL. To elucidate the factors underlying this difference, classical molecular dynamics simulations were performed on wild-type SDO complexed with GTQ and SAL. The simulations revealed that a water molecule anchored by the ARG127 residue adjacent to molecular oxygen is present with the GT

Deorphanization of the odorant receptor CsepOR1 identifies a biphasic behavioral modulator in Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

BACKGROUND: The seven-spot ladybird beetle, Coccinella septempunctata, is a key predatory natural enemy widely deployed for biological control of agricultural pests. Olfaction is crucial for prey location and searching, yet the molecular mechanisms of chemoreception in this species remain largely unknown. RESULTS: Antennal transcriptome analysis identified a repertoire of 24 odorant receptors (ORs), of which CsepOR1 exhibited the highest expression level in the antennae. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis confirmed that CsepOR1 is predominantly expressed in femal
