Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

Two decades of medication administration errors related to pain management: Hospital admissions for nonopioid analgesics, antipyretics, and antirheumatics in Australia.

The rate of medication poisoning is constantly increasing globally, increasing the number of hospital admissions and the burden on the health system. In Australia, nonopioid analgesics, antipyretics, and antirheumatics medications cause a high rate of accidental poisonings. This study aims to study hospital admissions trends related to medication administration errors (MAEs; poisoning by, adverse effect of and underdosing of) of nonopioid analgesics, antipyretics, and antirheumatics-related in Australia from 1998 to 2022. This ecological study used hospital admissions data from the National Ho

Medication utilization in traumatic brain injury patients-insights from a population-based matched cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with health problems across multiple domains and TBI patients are reported to have high rates of medication use. However, prior evidence is thin due to methodological limitations. Our aim was thus to examine the use of a wide spectrum of medications prescribed to address pain and somatic conditions in a population-based cohort of TBI patients, and to compare this to a sex- and age-matched cohort. We also examined how patient factors such as sex, age, and TBI severity were associated with medication use. METHODS: We assessed Swedish nati

Hyponatremia in geriatric patients.

Hyponatremia is the most frequent electrolyte imbalance in geriatric medicine. Causes of hyponatremia were retrospectively analyzed in all in-patients treated in 2016 (N = 2267, 1564 women, 703 men, mean age ± standard deviation 81.9 ± 7.6 years). Any form of hyponatremia on admission, during the stay or on discharge was noted in 308 patients (13.6%, 231 women, 77 men; mean age ± standard deviation 83.1 ± 7.3 years, p = 0.009 vs. age of all patients). Women had a higher probability of developing hyponatremia compared to men (p = 0.019), 131 patients were hypovolemic, and dyspnea as an indicato

Direct Oral Anticoagulants versus Vitamin K Antagonists in Individuals Aged 80 Years and Older: An Overview in 2021.

Two main types of oral anticoagulants are available in France: vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and, more recently, direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC). The benefit−risk profile appears to be favorable for DOAC, which is as effective as VKA but safer (fewer cases of severe and cerebral bleeding). In a study in 2017, we observed that older adults did not seem to receive the same modalities of oral anticoagulants as younger individuals for various reasons. To assess anticoagulation prescribing practices over time, we repeated this cross-sectional study by comparing very old individuals taking DOAC to t

Non-invasive management of rheumatoid arthritis using hollow microneedles as a tool for transdermal delivery of teriflunomide loaded solid lipid nanoparticles.

Conventional RA treatments required prolonged therapy courses that have been accompanied with numerous side effects impairing the patient's quality of life. Therefore, microneedles combined with nanotechnology emerged as a promising alternative non-invasive, effective and self-administrating treatment option. Hence, the main aim of this study is to reduce the side effects associated with systemic teriflunomide administration through its encapsulation in solid lipid nanoparticles (TER-SLNs) and their administration through transdermal route using AdminPen™ hollow microneedles array in the affec

Prevention of Shingles in Dermatology Patients on Systemic Medications.

The lifetime risk for herpes zoster (HZ) of approximately 1 in 3 is increased with advancing age, a family history of HZ, diseases with altered immune function, immunosuppression, physical trauma and psychological stress. In dermatology, monotherapy with current biologics does not increase risk, however systemic steroids, Janus kinase inhibitors and combination biologic/conventional disease-modifying antirheumatics do. The recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV, Shingrix®), an adjuvanted non-live subunit vaccine against the glycoprotein E subunit of varicella zoster virus, is approved for prevention

Aseptic osteonecrosis of the maxilla after severe COVID-19 infection and its treatment.

The course of the new SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is unpredictable and is still being investigated. Although the majority of complications are expected to affect the respiratory system, there have been reports in literature concerning the adverse effects of the infection on bone and joint tissue. Several complications have been observed in the maxillofacial area in people who suffered from the infection, including osteonecrosis and osteomyelitis of the jaw. These complications have been subject to various hypotheses. They may result either from the disease pathogenetic mechanism or from a response t
