High-intensity interval training alleviates depressive-like behaviors and is associated with differences in gut microbiota composition and prefrontal LPS-associated inflammatory measures in CUMS rats.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is a safe and effective intervention for improving depressive symptoms, but the effects and related mechanisms of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) remain unclear. Growing evidence suggests that interactions among the gut microbiota, immune-inflammatory responses, and the central nervous system may contribute to the development and progression of depression. This study investigated whether a 4-week HIIT intervention attenuated depressive-like behaviors and explored related differences in gut microbiota composition and prefrontal cortical lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-asso

Bowel preparation for colonoscopy in patients with surgically altered anatomy: a narrative review and institutional protocol.

Colonoscopy is a vital diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for diseases affecting the rectum, colon, and terminal ileum. In patients who have undergone colorectal surgery, postoperative colonoscopy is frequently required for purposes such as colorectal neoplasia surveillance. However, administering bowel preparation in this population poses significant challenges for patients, caregivers, and the endoscopy team, including gastroenterologists and nurses. Despite these challenges, there is limited peer-reviewed guidance on optimal bowel preparation strategies for these patients. This review sum

Dendrobine's mechanism: alleviating cholesterol metabolism disorders via FXR/LXR modulation in NAFLD mouse livers.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol homeostasis is tightly regulated through hepatic synthesis, intestinal absorption, and biliary excretion, with bile acids serving as critical regulators of cholesterol catabolism. Dysregulated cholesterol metabolism and bile acid imbalance are hallmarks of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), contributing to hepatic lipid accumulation and disease progression. Dendrobine (DNE), a bioactive alkaloid from Dendrobium nobile, has emerged as a potential therapeutic candidate for lipid metabolic disorders. METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet to establish an

Ileal Digestibility of Crude Protein and Amino Acids in Bakery and Biscuit Byproducts Fed to Growing Pigs.

This study evaluated the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AAs) in three bakery and biscuit byproducts fed to growing pigs. Five crossbred barrows fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum were allotted to a 5 × 5 Latin square design. The AID of CP was higher in the plain bread meal (PB) and sweet bread meal (SB) than in corn (CN) and biscuit meal (BC) (p < 0.05), while the AID of most indispensable AAs was higher in CN and PB than in BC (p < 0.05), reflecting the dietary CP and total AA concentrations. After

Dietary supplementation with genistein enhances growth performance via attenuating intestinal inflammation in weaned piglets.

As a soybean-derived isoflavone, genistein exhibits antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory functions, but its effects on weaned piglets remain to be fully elucidated. The current work assessed the impacts of diet-supplied genistein on piglets' growth performance, along with its effects on regulating intestinal oxidative injury and inflammation. In Trial 1, seventy-two weaned piglets were assigned at random to four treatments and provided basal diets with genistein added at 0, 50, 100, or 150 mg/kg. Each treatment included six replicate pens with three piglets per pen, and the experiment last

In vitro characterization of Bacillus sp. LS100 for detoxifying deoxynivalenol.

The mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination in animal feed has been reported to reduce the growth performance of animals and compromise their immune system, especially pigs. Bacterial detoxification is considered a promising strategy to mitigate its harmful effects. We previously identified a bacterial isolate (Bacillus sp. LS100) from the chicken gut with the ability to detoxify DON. To explore its potential application in swine production, the current study was focused on in vitro characterization of Bacillus sp. LS100 with regard to its capacity to detoxify DON. The bacterium was stabl

Beyond 'early surgery': Reframing Ileocaecal resection as strategic care in Crohn's disease.

AIM: The concept of 'early surgery' for ileocaecal Crohn's disease (CD) has gained traction since the LIR!C trial demonstrated that laparoscopic ileocaecal resection is a cost-effective alternative to infliximab for uncomplicated terminal ileitis. However, the term 'early' is imprecisely defined, temporally misleading and difficult to operationalise in clinical practice. This article aims to propose a more useful clinical framework for the timing of ileocaecal resection in CD. METHOD: We critically appraised the 10-year follow-up of the LIR!C trial, together with population-based and pooled o

Effect of dietary chickpea structures on the small intestine metabolome and microbiome: a randomised crossover trial.

The human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is central to human physiology, yet our understanding of the metabolite, microbial, and hormonal spatiotemporal dynamics in humans is limited. How these environments respond to complex food structures and homeostatic mechanisms they generate is unknown in humans. In this randomised study, ten participants consumed chickpea-based meals with intact versus broken cellular structures, with sampling of oral, gastric, duodenal and ileal fluids. The primary outcome was the postprandial enteroendocrine hormone responses (GIP, GLP-1 and PYY); secondary outcomes we

Low-Dose Glyphosate Exposure Alters the Enteric Tachykinin System in the Porcine Small Intestine.

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide, yet its effects on the enteric nervous system (ENS) remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of low-dose glyphosate exposure on substance P (SP)-immunoreactive neurons and tachykinin receptor gene expression in the porcine small intestine. Fifteen juvenile pigs were assigned to three groups (n = 5 per group): a control group and two groups receiving oral glyphosate for 28 days at doses corresponding to the estimated maximum daily intake in Europe (0.05 mg/kg BW/day) and the acceptable daily intake (0.5 mg/kg BW/day). Recurrent Intermittent Small Bowel Obstruction as an Initial Manifestation of Primary Intestinal Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma: A Case Report and Systematic Literature Review.

Primary intestinal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a rare gastrointestinal malignancy and an uncommon cause of small bowel obstruction (SBO). We report a 70-year-old man with no history of abdominal surgery who presented with recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, vomiting, and transiently resolving SBO. Serial computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a persistent transition point associated with an increasingly evident mesenteric soft tissue mass, initially suspected to represent a neuroendocrine tumor. After repeated presentations and temporary improvement with conservative management,

Jujube pit ingestion leading to ileal perforation and secondary acute appendicitis in a child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is a common pediatric surgical emergency. While most cases are primary, secondary appendicitis resulting from intra-abdominal pathologies like intestinal perforation is rare and diagnostically challenging. Sharp foreign body ingestion, such as jujube pits, can lead to intestinal perforation, peritonitis, and subsequent inflammation of adjacent organs, including the appendix. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of an 8-year-old boy who presented with a one-day history of migratory right lower quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, and high fever (39.2 ℃). Laboratory

Aberrant absorptive enterocyte differentiation is associated with altered ion transport and chronic inflammatory diahrea in IBD patients.

Diarrhea is a hallmark of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), often linked to a leaky epithelial barrier and an impaired fluid and electrolyte absorption. This study investigates whether a defect in enterocyte differentiation contributed to reduced absorptive, but increased leak protein expression in patients with Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Segmental biopsies from the terminal ileum to the rectum were collected from IBD patients and healthy controls (HC). mRNA and protein levels of key absorptive ion transporters and markers of cell proliferation and differentiation were a

Heterotopic pancreas as a rare lead point of ileal intussusception mimicking acute appendicitis in a child: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Heterotopic pancreas is an uncommon developmental anomaly characterized by pancreatic tissue located outside the normal pancreas without anatomical or vascular continuity. Although it is most frequently identified in the stomach and duodenum, involvement of the ileum is rare, particularly in children. When present in the small intestine, it may act as a pathological lead point for intussusception, posing a considerable diagnostic challenge because the underlying lesion is often not identified by preoperative imaging. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 6
