Intestinal obstruction due to congenital bands in adults who have never had abdominal surgery Two case reports and a review of the literature.

Congenital abdominal bands are a very rare entity and are often silent for a person's entire life. In a very few circumstances, however, they can manifest with clinical symptoms. Diagnosis of these bands is very challenging as the patient has never submitted for abdominal surgery and imaging, laboratory tests and clinical examination can be silent or unspecific. Two patients were admitted to and operated on in our hospital between June 2017 and July 2018. All patients had a bowel obstruction at the time of presentation, presenting no emission of faeces or gas. Conservative therapy was tried in

Characterization of the behavior of carotenoids from pitanga (Eugenia uniflora) and buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) during microemulsion production and in a dynamic gastrointestinal system.

Microglia are cells of the myeloid lineage that reside in the central nervous system (CNS)(1). These cells play an important role in pathologies of many diseases associated with neuroinflammation such as multiple sclerosis (MS)(2). Microglia in a normal CNS express macrophage marker CD11b and exhibit a resting phenotype by expressing low levels of activation markers such as CD45. During pathological events in the CNS, microglia become activated as determined by upregulation of CD45 and other markers(3). The factors that affect microglia phenotype and functions in the CNS are not well studied.

Diagnostic difficulties in pernicious anemia.

Pernicious anemia (PA), the commonest cause of cobalamin deficiency (CD) in the world, is an autoimmune disease of multifactorial origin and is characterized by chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and defective absorption of cobalamin from the terminal ileum due to interference by the intrinsic factor (IF) antibodies. PA-related CD is a lengthy process, which if untreated, can lead to irreversible hematological and neurological sequelae. Although safe and effective therapy is available and the management of PA is straightforward, the diagnosis of PA can be extremely difficult to obtain due to myr

Massive Lipomatosis of the Small Intestine Causing Intussusception.

Lipomatosis is a rare condition characterized by diffuse, unencapsulted adipose tissue deposition. Intestinal involvement is rare, and presentation as intussusception is rarer still. We report a 40-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and fecal urgency. Abdominal CT scan showed a protuberant ileo-cecal valve, with intussusception of the ileum into the cecum. The mucosal surface of the resected bowel was bulbous and protuberant, showing loss of mucosal folds, and there was an 8 × 5 × 5 cm mass prolapsing into the ileo-cecal valve. Microscopically there was abundant adipose tissue in t

An Unusual Mimic of Intermittent Bowel Obstruction.

BACKGROUND Indigestible foreign material in the bowel can develop into bezoars. Intestinal obstruction can occur secondary to these bezoars. Phytobezoars specifically refer to those which accumulate as a result of undigested plant or other food material. CASE REPORT A 42-year-old woman presented to the Emergency Department with a several-month history of right-sided abdominal pain associated with bouts of vomiting. She had no other significant medical history. Labs and computed tomography were unrevealing. Gastroenterology was consulted and performed endoscopy. A foreign body resembling an und

Small bowel adenocarcinoma incarcerated within an inguinal hernia.

BACKGROUND: Small bowel adenocarcinomas are rare malignant tumors that account for less than 2% of gastrointestinal malignancies. In addition, tumor incarceration in an inguinal hernia is also rare entity. We herein report a first case of small bowel adenocarcinoma incarcerated within an inguinal hernia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old man with asymptomatic anemia (hemoglobin, 8.6 g/dl) had a checkup at our hospital. Colonoscopy revealed bleeding through the ileocecal valve and an annular stricture by a tumor in the ileum. Endoscopic biopsy revealed a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of th

Duodenal Crohn's Disease Complicated by Pancreatitis and Common Bile Duct Obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Crohn's disease (CD) is characterized by segmental and transmural involvement of any portion of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. Duodenal CD is a rare clinical entity, with the majority of the patients being symptomless - its diagnosis requires a high level of clinical suspicion. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 29-year-old male patient with a 2-month history of weight loss, epigastric pain and postprandial vomiting. He underwent upper endoscopy, which revealed a circumferential duodenal ulcer causing non-transposable luminal stenosis and was med

Immunohistochemical localization of nerve injury-induced protein-1 in mouse tissues.

Nerve injury-induced protein (Ninjurin)-1 is a cell adhesion molecule that is upregulated in neurons and Schwann cells after transection injury in rats. In this study, we investigated the localization of Ninjurin-1 in various tissues, including the cerebrum, sciatic nerve, spleen, lung, stomach, ileum, colon, liver, pancreas, kidney, testis, and skin in C57BL/6 mice, using Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Western blot analysis showed that Ninjurin-1 was differentially expressed among organs. Ninjurin-1 was abundant in skin and ileum, weakly expressed in cerebrum, and moderately expre

Bradykinin-Potentiating Factors of Venom from Iranian Medically Important Scorpions.

The venom of animals, including snakes, scorpions, and spiders is a complex combination of proteins, peptides, and other biomolecules as well as some minerals. Among the biomolecules of some animal’s venom, small peptides that lack disulfide bands known as Non-Disulfide Bridge Peptides (NDBPs) potentiate the bradykinin by preventing the conversion of angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 using the mechanism of inhibiting the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme activity and finally reducing the blood pressure in the victims. This feature of the NDBPs of animal’s venom is suggested as the

Evaluation of the standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids of rapeseed meals varying in protein solubility for Pekin ducks.

This study was conducted to determine whether protein solubility (PS) of rapeseed meals (RSM) can affect standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIDAA) in meat ducks. A total of 1,168, 14-days-old ducks were randomly allotted to 23 treatments (6 cages per diet, 8 ducks per cage) and 1 nitrogen-free diet treatment (8 cages, 8 ducks per cage) based on body weight. The 23 experimental diets consisted of a corn-soybean meal basal diet, and 22 diets containing 15% RSM: 85% basal diet. Titanium dioxide (0.5%) was included in all diets as an indigestible marker. On day 18, all ducks were euthani

Lactobacillus johnsonii L531 ameliorates enteritis via elimination of damaged mitochondria and suppression of SQSTM1-dependent mitophagy in a Salmonella infantis model of piglet diarrhea.

Newly weaned piglets challenged with Salmonella infantis were particularly susceptible, whereas oral preadministration of Lactobacillus johnsonii L531 alleviated enteritis and promoted intestinal secretory IgA production. Salmonella infantis-induced activation of NLRC4 and NLRP3 inflammasomes and (nuclear factor kappa B) NF-κB signaling in the small intestine was also inhibited by L. johnsonii L531 pretreatment, thus limiting inflammation. An IPEC-J2 cell model of S. infantis infection yielded similar results. Salmonella infantis infection also resulted in mitochondrial damage and impaired mit
