International journal of surgery case reports2026eng
BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, yet it rarely becomes symptomatic in adults. Perforation is an uncommon and often overlooked complication that may mimic more frequent abdominal conditions, particularly in the postoperative setting. MD presenting shortly after unrelated laparoscopic surgery is exceptionally rare and can pose a significant diagnostic challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old woman presented with acute right upper quadrant pain and was diagnosed with calculous cholecystitis. She underwent laparoscopic

A Meckel's diverticulum is a blind-ending pouch that arises on the antimesenteric border of the terminal ileum. It is the most common gastrointestinal anomaly and the result of an incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct during the first 8 weeks of gestation. The 'rule of two' is a mnemonic which refers to key characteristics of Meckel diverticula: it is found in 2% of the population, it is 2 inches long, 2 feet from the ileocaecal valve and twice as common in males. Only 2%-4% of those with a Meckel's develop complications in their lifetime. The majority present in early childhood with c

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract but remains diagnostically challenging in children because of its varied and nonspecific clinical presentation. Concomitant Meckel's diverticulum and acute appendicitis are uncommon and may further obscure diagnosis. We report a 9-year-old boy who presented with chronic periumbilical abdominal pain of 3 months' duration, with acute worsening over 3 days accompanied by vomiting. Physical examination revealed localized right periumbilical tenderness without signs of peritonitis. Laboratory investigations de

Inflammatory bowel disease, specifically Crohn's disease (CD), can present with hematochezia, iron deficiency anemia, intestinal obstruction, elevated fecal calprotectin often overlapping with other conditions. We report a 16-year-old adolescent boy with presumed stricturing CD whose anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy failed to respond. Persistent iron deficiency anemia and elevated fecal calprotectin prompted reevaluation imaging, raising concerns for the Meckel diverticulum. Surgical resection resulted in resolution of anemia. This case highlights the importance of reassessing a diagnosis in

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum is a common congenital abnormality of gastrointestinal tract in children. Planar scintigraphy using Technetium-99m pertechnetate is widely used in the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum. Single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) fusion imaging may help to locate the Meckel's diverticulum lesion. We now present a Meckel's diverticulum case which tends to be missed.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was diagnosed with Mecke's diverticulum by planar scintigraphy in 2007. After seven years, a recurrence of hematochezia made the patie

Giant Meckel's diverticula (GMD), characterized by a diameter over 5 cm, are a rare manifestation of the most common congenital gastrointestinal anomaly. GMDs challenge the conventional understanding of Meckel's diverticulum. Their detection may be linked to complications such as inflammation, perforation, or obstruction, which are more frequent in larger lesions. This report presents an unusual case of GMD found incidentally during surgery for acute appendicitis, representing the first documented instance in the English-speaking Caribbean. It emphasizes the diagnostic difficulties associated

OBJECTIVE: Enteric duplication cysts are a rare congenital malformation that consists of a cystic formation adjacent to the native gastrointestinal tract. A double wall appearance on fetal abdominal sonography is highly suggestive of its diagnosis. However, this sign also can be seen in an ovarian cyst, a mesenteric cyst, and a Meckel's diverticulum. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the first report of accurate prenatal diagnosis based upon the presence of a Y-configuration and peristalsis on prenatal sonography. We herein present prenatal and postnatal images including ultrasonogram

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a common developmental abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract that, in adults, is usually asymptomatic but can present with complications including malignancy. Although malignancy in MD is rare overall, MD is recognized a high-risk site for tumorigenesis compared to the surrounding ileum. Neuroendocrine neoplasms are the most common malignancy arising in MD and are often associated with nodal metastases, even if the primary tumor is small. We report the case of a 66-year-old male who underwent exploratory laparotomy for small bowel obstruction and was intraoper

BACKGROUND: Neonatal pneumoperitoneum is a life-threatening condition requiring urgent surgical intervention. Although Meckel's diverticulum (MD) and anorectal malformations (ARMs) are individually recognised congenital anomalies, their coexistence is uncommon, and perforated MD in a neonate with a bucket-handle ARM has been rarely described in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A term male neonate (birthweight 2600 g) presented on Day 4 of life with progressive abdominal distension and nonbilious vomiting. Examination revealed tachycardia, tachypnoea, delayed capillary refill and a bucket-ha

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is most commonly encountered during emergency interventions for complications or as an incidental finding during an unrelated procedure. Definitive pre-operative diagnosis of MD-associated adenocarcinoma, permitting radical resection, is very rare in clinical practice.
CASE SUMMARY: A 36-year-old male presented with recurrent dark-red hematochezia. Initial gastroscopy, colonoscopy, computed tomography, and tumor marker assessments were unremarkable. A technetium-99m pertechnetate Meckel scan (Meckel scan) revealed ectopic gastric mucosa, suggesting an MD

We report the case of a 56-year-old male with a long-standing history of stricturing CD involving distal ileum. He had previously been treated with multiple biologics agents (infliximab, adalimumab, ustekinumab) due to persistent stenotic disease requiring repeated endoscopic ileal dilations. He presented to the emergency department with a two-week history of generalized abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Physical examination revealed diffuse abdominal tenderness and distension without signs of peritonism. Laboratory tests were unremarkable. Abdominal radiography demonstrated dilated small b

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a common congenital anomaly, usually symptomatic in early childhood. The presence of multiple heterotopic tissues within a single diverticulum is rare and poses significant diagnostic challenges. In this report, a 12-year-old male presented with a month-long history of painless lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding (melena and hematochezia). While endoscopy was normal, 99mTc scintigraphy revealed MD in the right pelvic region. Laparoscopic diverticulectomy was performed, and histopathology confirmed MD containing dual ectopic gastric and pancreatic tissues. Symptom

This study aimed to determine the ileal digestibility of amino acids (AA) in various protein sources for 21-day-old broilers. A total of 448 Ross 308 male broilers were allocated to eight dietary treatments with eight replicates in a randomized complete block design. Experimental diets included one nitrogen-free diet and seven test diets, each containing one of the following feed ingredients-dehulled soybean meal (SBM), fermented SBM (FSBM), rapeseed meal (RM), copra meal (CM), palm kernel meal (PKM), corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), and fish meal (FM), as the sole source of

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct. Although usually asymptomatic, it may rarely present as an umbilical lesion resembling an umbilical granuloma, creating diagnostic challenges in low-resource settings.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 4-month-old Somali male infant presented with a persistent umbilical mass and mucous discharge. The lesion had previously been diagnosed as an umbilical granuloma and treated with silver nitrate without improvement. Exam

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital malformation of the gastrointestinal tract. Most cases are asymptomatic, while a minority may develop complications such as hematochezia, diverticulitis, and intestinal obstruction. When a Meckel's diverticulum inverts into the lumen of the ileum rather than protruding outward from the intestinal wall, it is referred to as an inverted Meckel's diverticulum, which is a very rare condition. Although inverted MD frequently presents with intestinal obstruction, cases of pure inversion without obstruction are exceptionally rare.

Massive lower gastrointestinal bleeding in young children is a rare but potentially life-threatening emergency requiring rapid localization of the bleeding source. We report the case of a 2-year-old child who presented with abrupt onset of profuse rectal bleeding, profound anemia (hemoglobin 4.6 g/dL), and hemodynamic instability. Emergency computed tomography angiography demonstrated active intraluminal contrast extravasation within the small bowel, associated with imaging signs of hypovolemic shock. No target vessel amenable to endovascular treatment was identified, and urgent surgical explo

The remnants of the omphalomesenteric duct (OMD) can lead to various congenital anomalies, including Meckel's diverticulum, cysts, and fistulas, which may require surgical intervention. The OMD remnants usually occur in pediatric age groups. Clinical presentation of the patients varies widely. Some patients may remain asymptomatic throughout their lives. Some others may have complications necessitating surgical treatment. Symptoms include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, or signs of infection. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound or CT scans are required to evaluate the presence of
