A complex trauma history is progressively detrimental and interferes with education in emerging adults. Instead of completing education at a higher level where fewer cases are found, previous studies have mostly targeted educational failure at the undergraduate level or below. A shift to a more positive view of the future for complex trauma survivors needs to be explored. A study of emerging adult graduate student complex trauma survivors helps understand the possibility of posttraumatic growth. This article presents a case study of a 24-year-old male who completed his graduate studies despite

Deep fungal infections are endemic to tropical and subtropical regions and can occur in individuals who are both immunocompetent and immunocompromised. Clinically, these infections may present as verrucous plaques, subcutaneous nodules, abscesses or ulcerations. Common causative organisms in immunocompetent hosts include Sporothrix schenckii, Madurella mycetomatis and Fonsecaea pedrosoi. However, emerging evidence suggests that Trichosporon asahii and Candida parapsilosis are increasingly implicated in these infections. A 64-year-old Cambodian man with a history of recently treated pulmonary t

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM)/atypical mycobacteria are opportunistic pathogens ubiquitous in the environment. Recently, NTM cases causing skin and soft tissue infections are on the rise, owing to the improved diagnostic techniques as well as heightened number of procedures. A man in the mid 60s with diabetes, on insulin for the past 20 years, presented with multiple painful swellings, a few of them with pus discharge, over the insulin injection sites of arms, abdomen and thighs for the past 10 months. Local ultrasonography revealed anechoic collections surrounding increased vascularity i

BACKGROUND: Neck lymphadenopathy is frequently associated with infectious etiologies such as tuberculosis (TB); however, malignant conditions can present with similar clinical and radiological features, leading to diagnostic uncertainty and potential misdiagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 35-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with persistent fever and a progressively enlarging right neck mass. Initial fine-needle aspiration (FNA) revealed multinucleated giant cells consistent with granulomatous inflammation, prompting a presumptive diagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis and ini

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Mycobacterium marinum is a slow growing Non-Tuberculosis Mycobacteria known to cause skin and subcutaneous tissue infections known as "fish tank granuloma" in humans. Treatment of M. marinum skin infections can last for several months or even years. Intravenous or intramuscular administration of Amikacin, a bactericidal inhibitor, in a multidrug regimen is a good therapeutic option in treating M. marinum infections. No topical hydrogels are currently available to treat M. marinum skin infections. We developed a 2.5% amikacin-loaded carbopol hydrogel containing the permeation enhancers 1% Tween

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic, granulomatous, infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Cutaneous TB accounts for less than 1-2% of all TB cases. Scrofuloderma is a subcutaneous form of cutaneous TB, which results from direct spreading of infection from deeper tissues.
CASE REPORTS: We present two patients with scrofuloderma who exhibited typical clinical features but posed significant diagnostic challenges. In the first case, diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of a tissue specimen which detected M. tuberculosis. All other micr

A 60-year-old immunocompetent patient presented with painless subcutaneous nodules on the right hand and forearm that progressed over several weeks. Nodules were clinically classified as a soft tissue tumor of primarily mesenchymal origin. After extirpation of two nodules for diagnostic clarification, histology showed a chronic granulomatous inflammation of the dermis and subcutis with central eosinophilic necrosis including cell debris. Light microscopy showed no acid-fast rods, but molecular diagnostics revealed DNA of Mycobacterium haemophilum as a nontuberculoid mycobacterium (NTM). The in

Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB), a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, often presents diagnostic challenges in clinical settings due to its atypical presentation. The definitive diagnosis relies heavily on pathological evaluation, which underscores the importance of understanding the distinct pathological characteristics and drug resistance patterns of CTB, a subject that has not been extensively explored previously. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of 59 CTB samples and 59 pulmonary tuberculosis samples, focusing on their clinicopathological features. Our finding

Chromoblastomycosis is a deep fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. This case underscores the critical importance of thorough laboratory investigations, particularly histopathology, in chronic dermatological conditions that mimic other granulomatous diseases. Misdiagnosis, such as treating chromoblastomycosis as cutaneous tuberculosis without confirmatory testing, can delay appropriate therapy and prolong morbidity.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the apocrine glands, typically presenting with cycles of flare-ups and periods of improvement. It predominantly affects women and is commonly found in areas such as the axillae, inguinal, and inframammary regions. We present a case of a 25-year-old male from Brazil who presented with recurrent cervical lesions over two years, initially suspected to be skin tuberculosis (scrofuloderma). Diagnostic workup included polymerase chain reaction (PCR), tuberculin skin test (TST), chest X-ray, and histological analysis, all of which rul

Lawsonella clevelandensis is rare to associated with human infection, which may cause abscesses in abdominal cavity, liver, breast, and spine. Lawsonella clevelandensis is very difficult to be cultivated in regular manner; detection of 16S rRNA sequence is the main evidence for L. clevelandensis infection. The clinical manifestations of L. clevelandensis infection resemble other agents of Nocardia, Tuberculosis and non-tuberculous Mycobacterium (NTM) due to their morphologic similarities. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder, which affects the intertriginous skin an

Background: Apalutamide is a new drug class, which is approved to treat prostate cancer (PCa). The aim of our study was to assess the safety profiles of apalutamide in real-world through data mining of the United States Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). Method: We included adverse event (AE) reports regarding apalutamide submitted to the FAERS from 2018 quarter 1 (2018Q1) to 2022 quarter 1 (2022Q1). Disproportionality analyses, including reporting odds ratio (ROR), were performed to identify the signals of AEs in patients receiving apalutamide. A signal was d

We admitted a patient with extensive and rapidly progressing necrotizing fasciitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, cutaneous tuberculosis, and bacterial infections because of late diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis is necessary for both cutaneous tuberculosis and necrotizing fasciitis. However, these are rare clinical manifestations and are difficult to detect. Despite surgical and pharmacologic treatment, the patient had poor outcomes. We discussed the next-generation sequencing test for early tuberculosis diagnosis, especially for atypical ones. The modified and typical laboratory risk indica

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is a rare and aggressive form of thyroid cancer that has a poor prognosis and a high mortality rate. It is characterized by rapid growth and invasion of nearby tissues. It typically presents as a rapidly growing goiter or nodule that is firm to the touch and firmly attached to the underlying structures. Case reports of unusual presentations of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma have been reported. The presentation of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma mimicking cervical tuberculosis is very unusual. We reported a case of a 65-year-old patient who had a left cervical swelling t

A 38-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) initiated belimumab treatment. One month later, she presented with a reddish painful swelling on her right lower leg. She was treated with ceftriaxone and vancomycin. However, novel erythematous papules and indurated nodules appeared on both her lower legs. Skin biopsy revealed microabscess formation with mixed cell granuloma surrounded by inflammatory cell infiltration within the dermis with subcutaneous fat tissue. A large number of acid-fast bacilli were observed with Ziehl-Neelsen staining. DNA sequencing of both the hsp65 and th

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by the intracellular bacillus Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae), which is known to infect skin macrophages and Schwann cells. Although adipose tissue is a recognized site of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, its role in the histopathology of leprosy was, until now, unknown. We analyzed the M. leprae capacity to infect and persist inside adipocytes, characterizing the induction of a lipolytic phenotype in adipocytes, as well as the effect of these infected cells on macrophage recruitment. We evaluated 3T3-L1-derived adipocytes, inguinal adipose

Recently, many attempts have been made to use injectable materials in the subcutaneous fat layer anywhere in the body, including the breast and face, for cosmetic purposes. A 56-year-old woman presented with multiple palpable lumps without tenderness or skin color changes on the anterior and lateral chest and the abdominal walls. Magnetic resonance imaging showed fluid-like collections without surrounding soft tissue inflammatory changes in the chest wall, abdominal wall, and deeper within the abdomen. The lesions penetrated the peritoneum and were observed adjacent to the liver dome. Ultrason

INTRODUCTION: Mycetoma is a chronic infection that can affect the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and bone. Although Ethiopia is in the so-called mycetoma belt, very little has been published about the disease in Ethiopia. There are no data about mycetoma in Ethiopia yet. Here, we present the first detailed description of mycetoma patients in Ethiopia.
CASES PRESENTATION: Seven cases of clinically diagnosed mycetoma from Boru Meda Hospital are described. All patients presented with swelling of the foot, although sinuses and grains were identified for only one patient. Patients presented late with
