INTRODUCTION: Ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) is the standard procedure for reconstruction after colectomy for ulcerative colitis (UC). However, ileorectal anastomosis (IRA) as an alternative has, recently experienced a revival. This study from a single center compares the clinical outcomes of these procedures.

BACKGROUND: Ampullary (AMP-A) and duodenal adenocarcinomas (DA) are rare tumors. The literature regarding treatment and outcome is very limited. The objective of this project is to compare the outcomes of AMP-A and DA.
METHODS: The records for AMP-A and DA patients between July 1995 and July 2012 at Emory University were reviewed for demographics, pathology, treatment, and survival. Survival rates were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method and compared with log-rank test. A Cox proportional hazard model was fitted to estimate the adjusted effect of AMP-A versus DA on overall survival (OS).

BACKGROUND: Duodenal villous atrophy (DVA) is a key diagnostic finding in coeliac disease (CD). However, the differential diagnosis for this finding is broad.

Rare cases of CD20+ T-cell lymphoma (TCL) have been reported, but the clinicopathologic spectrum of this disorder is not known. We identified 9 cases of CD20+ TCL diagnosed at our institution and 26 additional cases through a search of the English language literature. The clinicopathologic features of neoplasms arising in gastrointestinal endometriosis have not been well characterized. In this series, we report 17 cases of gastrointestinal endometriosis complicated by neoplasms (14 cases) or precancerous changes (three cases). We report a case of gastrointestinal manifestation of tuberculosis (TB). A 52 year-old female patient was admitted into another hospital with unspecified gastrointestinal complaints. A computer tomography (CT) and a coloscopy showed a mild stenosis in the ileocecal region. The routine pulmonary X-ray showed a nodule, the cytology of the sputum was positive for tuberculosis. The patient was therefore transferred to our hospital. Following the anti-tuberculostastic treatment, the patient's abdominal condition improved but the symptoms reappeared weeks later. A sonography showed biliary calculus.

To describe the epidemiology of small intestinal atresia (SIA) in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1968 through 1989, we used the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program, an active, population-based surveillance system for birth defects diagnosed during the first year of life. We identified 176 infants with SIA, a prevalence of 2.8 per 10,000 livebirths. Small bowel obstruction (SBO) as a late complication of the treatment of Hodgkin's disease was found in 32 of 398 (8%) patients followed over a 20 year period. The vast majority of these patients had an initial staging laparotomy as part of staging protocols.
