Patients' perspectives of the long-term impact of orthodontic treatment: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: The Italian COPD Patient Association (Associazione Pazienti BPCO) conducted an online survey among its 2814 members with COPD to investigate the reasons for the widespread use of mucolytic therapies by patients, often including self-prescription using over the counter (OTC) alternatives. METHODS: After consulting with several respiratory specialists, the Association's steering committee developed a list of nine questions with possible answers that was posted on the website of the Association. The survey was open to all members of the Association, with responses to be e-mailed to

Real world data on the management of non-cytotoxic drug extravasation: An observational retrospective study in paediatric and adult patients.

BACKGROUND: The extravasation of non-cytotoxic drugs is a risk posed by intravenous therapy, particularly in critically ill patients who often require multiple intravenous medications. This risk must be promptly addressed to prevent morbidity, increased therapy costs and prolonged length of stay, especially in critical care units. Therefore, it is critical to define the specific measures that should be undertaken to approach each situation. AIM: The aim of this research was to describe the extravasation of non-cytotoxic drugs occurring in a tertiary hospital and to assess the effectiveness an

Mucolytics for children with chronic suppurative lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD) is an umbrella term to define the spectrum of endobronchial suppurative lung disease, including bronchiectasis and protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB), associated with chronic wet or productive cough. Research that explores new therapeutic options in children with CSLD has been identified by clinicians and patients as one of the top research priorities. Mucolytic agents work to improve mucociliary clearance and interrupt the vicious vortex of airway infection and inflammation, hence they have potential as a therapeutic option. OBJECTIVES:

[Design and application of a chest belt-type vibration expectorator].

Disruption of normal secretion or mucociliary clearance can impair airway defense mechanisms and lung function, and increase the risk of infection. Airway clearance techniques are recommended as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for patients. Among these, vibratory expectoration is an important method of airway clearance, which loosens and liquefies mucus and metabolites on the surface of the respiratory tract through chest wall oscillation, promoting ciliary movement to facilitate sputum expulsion. However, commonly used handheld vibrating head devices and vest-type vibration expectorato

Natural sunlight-driven phototransformation of the expectorant drug ambroxol in freshwaters.

Ambroxol (AMB), a widely used expectorant drug, has been ubiquitously detected in aquatic environments due to its limited metabolism in the human body. Herein, we systematically investigated the photodegradation of AMB in waters upon natural sunlight irradiation. AMB has a pKa value of 8.42, as determined by spectroscopic titration. A dibromoaniline moiety was identified as the primary chromophore responsible for its light absorption. AMB underwent relatively fast photodegradation, with a near-surface half-life (t1/2) of 2.1-3.0 h at noon on a clear midsummer day at 32°N. The quantum yield (Φ)

A Case of Bronchial Foreign Body Aspiration Caused by Inhaling a Mukago (Edible Yam Bulbil) Presenting With Persistent Cough.

An 85-year-old man presented with a persistent cough accompanied by sputum production. He was initially treated with antibiotics and expectorants but showed no improvement. Chest computed tomography revealed a dense nodule in the right bronchus intermedius. On detailed history-taking, he recalled eating mukago-a small edible bulbil of Dioscorea japonica that is occasionally consumed in Japan-shortly before symptom onset. Flexible bronchoscopy identified an oval, hard foreign body lodged in the bronchus, which was successfully removed using biopsy forceps. The extracted object was confirmed to

Hypertonic Saline or Carbocisteine in Bronchiectasis.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis guidelines are inconsistent with regard to the effectiveness of mucoactive agents, and their use varies geographically. Large trials are needed to assess safety and effectiveness. METHODS: For this open-label, randomized, two-by-two factorial trial at 20 sites in the United Kingdom, we enrolled participants with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis who had frequent pulmonary exacerbations and daily sputum production. Current smokers and persons who had recently received mucoactive treatments were excluded. All participants received standard care and were also assigned

[Ambroxol: mechanisms of action and efficacy for inhaled therapy in the treatment of respiratory diseases].

There is growing recognition that mucus and mucin biology have a considerable impact on respiratory health, and subsequent global morbidity and mortality. Mucins play a critical role in chronic lung disease, not only by providing a physical barrier and clearing pathogens, but also in immune homeostasis. Mucoactive drugs are commonly used to clear the airway in mucus hypersecretory diseases, which can alleviate mucus hypersecretion and increase the efficiency of expectoration. Theoretically, inhaled medications can be directly and rapidly delivered to the lower respiratory tract and exert thera

Pneumonic-type lung carcinoma with respiratory failure as the first manifestation: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Pneumonic-type lung carcinoma is a rare radiological lung cancer subtype. Its clinical and imaging manifestations are easily confused with pneumonia, leading to frequent misdiagnosis and mistreatment in clinical practice. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 77-year-old female was admitted with "left-sided body pain for 1 week and head/facial pain for 2 days." Initially lacking typical respiratory symptoms, she developed progressive respiratory failure requiring high-flow oxygen therapy after the initiation of anti-infective treatment. DIAGNOSES: Chest computed tomography revealed bilateral diffus

A general strategy to screen and evaluate antitussive, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant active components from raw and honey-fired Farfarae Flos based on β2-AR/CysLT1R/M3R chromatography and mice models.

Farfarae Flos and its honey-processed product are used to treat respiratory diseases; yet their active components and therapeutic targets remained unclear. Herein, we developed an integrated strategy combining receptor chromatography and mice models to screen and evaluate active components in both raw and honey-processed Farfarae Flos. We focused on three key receptors,β2-AR, CysLT1R, and M3R, known to be involved in antitussive, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant activities. These receptors were immobilized onto silica gels to construct affinity columns. Using these columns, we identified the
