Catalase: A Potential Pharmacologic Target for Hydrogen Peroxide in the Treatment of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory distress syndrome in the elderly with COVID-19 complicated by airway obstruction with sputum and mucus, and cases of asphyxia with blood, serous fluid, pus, or meconium in newborns and people of different ages can sometimes cause hypoxemia and death from hypoxic damage to brain cells, because the medical standard does not include intrapulmonary injections of oxygen-producing solutions. The physical-chemical repurposing of hydrogen peroxide from an antiseptic to an oxygen-producing antihypoxant offers hope for the development of new drugs. METHODS: This manuscript

Effect of high-dose N-acetylcysteine on exacerbations and lung function in patients with mild-to-moderate COPD: a double-blind, parallel group, multicentre randomised clinical trial.

Evidence for the treatment of patients with mild-to-moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is limited. The efficacy of N-acetylcysteine (an antioxidant and mucolytic agent) for patients with mild-to-moderate COPD is uncertain. In this multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we randomly assigned 968 patients with mild-to-moderate COPD to treatment with N-acetylcysteine (600 mg, twice daily) or matched placebo for two years. Eligible participants were 40-80 years of age and had mild-to-moderate COPD (forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1] to forced vi

The precision medicine strategy to treat COPD pulmonary traits in clinical practice: The role of N-acetylcysteine.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition and a leading cause of physical decline and death. COPD prevalence is expected to increase steadily in the coming years, and as a result, the healthcare and social burden of this condition will intensify. In this scenario, a patient-centric approach, the treatable trait (TT) strategy, based on the identification of traits that are clinically relevant, identifiable, monitorable and treatable, has emerged. The TT strategy, which considers behavioral/risk factors, as well as pulmonary and extrapulmonary traits, has shown

Use of mucolytics and inhaled antibiotics in the NICU.

Clearance of airway secretions and treatment of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are two common problems caregivers face in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Mucolytics degrade crosslinks in mucus gel, reducing mucus viscosity and facilitating their removal by cough or endotracheal suctioning. While such medications have been studied in older children and adults, their use is not as well described in the NICU. For RTIs, systemic antibiotics are usually prescribed, although their use is often associated with adverse effects. Inhaled antibiotics may provide increased drug concentration

Broaden properties of ambroxol hydrochloride as an antibiofilm compound.

Biofilm-associated microorganisms can cause many infections and are an important cause of resistance to several antimicrobials. The antibiotic crisis has led to a pressing need for new therapeutic tools. Ambroxol is frequently used as a mucolytic agent in respiratory diseases with increased mucus production. In addition, a wide range of properties has been described, including the effect on biofilms. In this work, we evaluate the anti-biofilm effect of ambroxol on four strains with clinical relevance: Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Acinetobacter baumannii. In v

Pharmacological profile of erdosteine - known molecule - new effects.

Erdostein belongs to the well-known thiol mucoactive drugs, whose effect is used in respiratory infections. Recently, expert findings show that the effect of erdosteine is more complex and can significantly contribute to the management of respiratory infections. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties come to the fore, or antiviral properties associated with them, as well as the ability to reduce bacterial adhesion and increase the effects of some antibiotics. Erdostein represents a comprehensive therapeutic option both in the field of self-treatment of respiratory infections and in o

Impact of N-Acetylcysteine on Mucus Hypersecretion in the Airways: A Systematic Review.

Mucus clearance is crucial for airway protection, and its dysfunction leads to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) characterized by mucus hypersecretion (MHS) and impaired clearance. MUC5AC and MUC5B mucin proteins are key components of airway mucus, with MUC5AC being particularly responsive to environmental stimuli, making it a potential COPD biomarker. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a mucolytic agent with known effects on mucus viscosity and clearance, but its precise mechanisms in COPD remain unclear. This systematic review evaluated the impact of NAC on MHS in the airways, reporting si

Hawking-Type Singularity Theorems for Worldvolume Energy Inequalities.

OBJECTIVES: Familial hyperparathyroidism may occur as part of hereditary syndromes, including multiple endocrine neoplasia types 1 and 2 (MEN1 and MEN2A), hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour (HPT-JT) syndrome and familial isolated hyperparathyroidism (FIHP). It is unclear whether the latter is a distinct genetic entity or a variant of MEN1 or HPT-JT, where, because of reduced penetrance, only primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is present. In the present study, we describe two unrelated Italian kindreds with FIHP, in which the clinical, histopathological and genetic analyses of the MEN1 gene and HPR
