BackgroundChildhood anemia is a very common problem in India, out of which more than one-third is attributed to vitamin B12 deficiency.AimTo follow up on a girl with recurrent anemia who was later diagnosed with hereditary intrinsic factor deficiency.MethodsAn eight-year-old girl presented with recurrent anemia, easy fatigability, poor appetite, and abdominal pain for one month. The hemoglobin was 4.3 g/dL, and the peripheral smear showed a dimorphic picture. Serum vitamin B12 was severely low at <50 pg/mL. After a packed red blood cell transfusion, she was advised to take oral vitamin B12 and

BACKGROUND: Anemia affects more than two-thirds of children aged <5 y in India, despite biweekly iron folic acid (IFA) supplementation under the Anemia Mukt Bharat national program. Multiple micronutrient (MMN) deficiencies may also contribute to the presence of anemia, but the incremental benefit of MMN supplementation in addition to IFA remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the efficacy of biweekly preventive supplementation with MMNs plus IFA compared with IFA alone on hemoglobin concentrations and prevalence of anemia in children aged 6-59 mo.
METHODS: In this individually ran

Autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) are chronic immune-mediated diseases associated with increased cardiovascular and renal morbidity. Vitamin D deficiency is common in these disorders and may coexist with inflammation, immune dysregulation, endothelial dysfunction, and impaired vascular and renal homeostasis. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the association of vitamin D deficiency with adverse cardiometabolic and renal outcomes in ARDs. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched from inception through March 31, 2026, without language re

BACKGROUND: Pernicious anemia (PA) is a severe clinical consequence of autoimmune gastritis. It results from immune-mediated damage to gastric parietal cells in the oxyntic mucosa. This process leads to intrinsic factor deficiency and subsequent vitamin B12 malabsorption. This complex autoimmune response, combined with non-specific clinical manifestations, generates substantial diagnostic uncertainty. This uncertainty frequently results in misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis and, consequently, multiple adverse outcomes, including irreversible neurological complications.
METHODS: To address the

Jehovah's Witnesses are a religious group whose beliefs regarding blood transfusion may pose important clinical and ethical challenges. As such, more patients refuse whole-blood transfusions. Patients with hip fractures often present with anemia, which increases the likelihood of requiring perioperative blood transfusion and increases morbidity and mortality after surgery. We present here the case report of an 80-year-old female patient, a Jehovah's Witness, with no previous history of thromboembolic events. She was admitted due to a right hip fracture after a fall from a standing height. She

OBJECTIVES: Colchicine is an essential component of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) treatment. It is suggested that it may affect vitamin B12 levels by affecting intestinal absorption. This research focused on examining the impact of colchicine therapy on anemia parameters, as well as levels of vitamin B12 and folate in patients who have recently been diagnosed with FMF.
METHOD: This prospective cohort investigation assessed children diagnosed with FMF between October 2016 and February 2017, evaluating anemia parameters as well as vitamin B12 and folate levels at baseline and at the third

Perioperative anemia and coagulopathy are frequent yet modifiable conditions in pediatric patients with medical complexity, significantly influencing surgical morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia, underscoring the importance of early detection, dietary modification, and timely oral or intravenous iron supplementation. Restrictive transfusion thresholds and selective use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents are recommended to reduce transfusion-related complications. Management of other nutritional (folate, vitamin B12, copper, and zinc) and non-nutr

Low-dose methotrexate (MTX) (5-25 mg/week) is widely used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and is considered relatively safe. There have been reports of toxicities caused by MTX, but the characteristics remain unclear. Through a retrospective case series at our hospital, we describe the clinical features, management, and outcomes of adverse reactions caused by MTX. This is a retrospective, single-center case series of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who developed adverse reactions while receiving low-dose MTX (5-25 mg/week) between March 2022 and August 2025. Background: Obesity is commonly seen as a condition of overnutrition; however, it is paradoxically associated with micronutrient deficiencies. These deficiencies are clinically relevant and may contribute to the progression of obesity-related comorbidities through interconnected pathways, including chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, gut dysbiosis, and impaired nutrient absorption. Objectives: This narrative review aims to summarize current evidence regarding the prevalence, underlying mechanisms, and clinical consequences of micronutrient deficiencies in individuals with obesity

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy associated with increased neurodegenerative risk. Vitamin D Deficiency (VDD) is a widespread systemic factor linked to neurobiological dysfunction. This study investigated the longitudinal association between VDD and the 5-year incidence of neurodegenerative outcomes in this glaucoma population.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used a large electronic health records (EHRs) network. Glaucoma patients were classified as VDD (< 30 ng/mL) or vitamin D adequate (VDA) (≥30 ng/mL). A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) procedure matche

There is a tacit assumption that the majority of nutritional anemia is caused by iron deficiency. However, several other key micronutrients are involved in iron and/or erythrocyte metabolism and thus play a role in the development of nutritional anemia. This consensus paper provides an updated review that synthesizes current evidence on the role of individual micronutrients, beyond iron, in the development of nutritional anemia and identifies emerging hypotheses and potential mechanistic links to erythropoiesis and iron metabolism involving nutrients of both established and growing interest. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Celiac disease (CD) is a systemic autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten ingestion, and the only effective treatment is strict adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). Many factors, including limited dietary diversity and poor adherence, are associated with an increased risk of specific micronutrient deficiencies and malnutrition. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between adherence to GFD, celiac antibody levels, micronutrient levels, and nutritional status in children with CD.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on 402 children aged 2-18 years with a

As populations age, micronutrient deficiencies increase and are linked to frailty, functional decline, cognitive impairment, anemia, and a higher healthcare burden. This review synthesizes evidence from the past five years on adults ≥65 years, comparing residents of nursing homes/assisted-living facilities with community-dwelling peers. Community-dwelling older adults show high prevalence of deficiencies-particularly vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, folate, and zinc-while vitamin B12 deficiency is less common overall but increases with age due to malabsorption. Institutionalized adults face high

OBJECTIVES: Red blood cell (RBC) morphology in peripheral blood smears (PBS) remains essential for the differential diagnosis of anemia and other hematologic disorders. As yet unclassified poikilocytes, fish-shaped RBCs and pincer (mushroom-shaped) cells are rarely observed but have been described as "bizarre erythrocytes" and linked to hereditary spherocytosis. This study aimed to investigate their relevance across a spectrum of hematologic diseases and provide a basis for future morphological standardization.
METHODS: Peripheral blood smears from 251 specimens were systematically reviewed,

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies remain prevalent among preschool-aged children (PSC) in India. Quintuply-fortified salt (QFS) is one of many potential interventions to improve micronutrient intake and status at the population level.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of QFS compared with iodized salt (IS) for 12 mo on the micronutrient status of PSC.
METHODS: This was a substudy of a double-blinded, household-randomized, controlled, community-based trial involving nonpregnant females of reproductive age whose households were randomly assigned to receive: 1) QFS with zinc, vitamin B-1

Although uncommon, scurvy can still occur in developed contries and can cause substantial morbidity and be life threatening if untreated. An impoverished 68-year-old woman with a low intake of fruit and vegetables presented with weakness and painful purpura on both legs, having experienced a similar episode 3 years previously. Laboratory tests revealed anemia, coagulopathy, a low folic acid concentration, and serum vitamin C concentration below the limit of detection. She was admitted and treated with transfusions of packed red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma owing to the coagulopathy, and

INTRODUCTION: Megaloblastic anemia in young children is a significant but preventable condition, commonly caused by deficiencies in folate or vitamin B12. Prolonged predominant feeding with nutritionally inadequate milk substitutes, such as unfortified goat milk, increases the risk of severe nutritional anemia, particularly in low-resource settings.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 2-year-old Somali boy who presented with a 5-month history of fatigue, recurrent fever, poor appetite, abdominal distension, progressive weight loss, and cough. The child had a history of prolonged predominant goat m
