Consideration of intersectoral costs and benefits in health economic evaluations of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review explores which intersectoral costs and benefits (ICBs) are considered in the economic evaluation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) across different age groups and the related impacts on the results of economic evaluations. METHODS: Seven databases were searched from 2009 to 2024 for full economic evaluations (Ees) of PCVs from a societal perspective. ICBs were presented narratively and in tabular form. Studies were appraised on quality, and PRISMA guidelines were followed. RESULTS: In all, 57 studies were included. ICBs were captured in the followin

Incremental effectiveness of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine against pneumonia hospitalisation among Australian Indigenous children: A record linkage study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) on pneumonia in children is well-documented but data on 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) are lacking. Between 2001 and 2011, Indigenous children in Western Australia (WA) were recommended to receive PPV23 at 18-24 months of age following 3 doses of 7-valent PCV. We evaluated the incremental effectiveness of PPV23 against pneumonia hospitalisation. METHODS: Indigenous children born in WA between 2001 and 2012 who received PCV dose 3 by 12 months of age were followed from 18 to 60 months of age for the first e

Model estimates of hospitalization discharge rates for norovirus gastroenteritis in Europe, 2004-2015.

BACKGROUND: Norovirus is an important cause of acute gastroenteritis globally. However, norovirus is rarely laboratory confirmed or recorded explicitly as a cause of hospitalization. In recent years, there has been an interest in using medical databases and indirect modelling methods to estimate the incidence of norovirus gastroenteritis. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of hospitalizations for norovirus gastroenteritis in Europe (2004-2015) using nationwide in-patient discharge records from different European countries. METHODS: National hospital discharge registers

Elucidating the impact of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine programme on pneumonia, sepsis and otitis media hospital admissions in England using a composite control.

BACKGROUND: The seven-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) was introduced in England in September 2006, changing to the 13-valent vaccine in April 2010. PCV impact on invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) has been extensively reported, but less described is its impact on the burden of pneumonia, sepsis and otitis media in the hospital. METHODS: Using details on all admissions to hospitals in England, we compared the incidence of pneumococcal-specific and syndromic disease endpoints in a 24-month pre-PCV period beginning April 2004 to the 24-month period ending March 2015 to derive incide

Use of different combination diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccines does not increase risk of 30-day infant mortality. A population-based linkage cohort study using administrative data from the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register and the National Death Index.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether differences in combination DTaP vaccine types at 2, 4 and 6 months of age were associated with mortality (all-cause or non-specific), within 30 days of vaccination. DESIGN: Observational nationwide cohort study. SETTING: Linked population data from the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register and National Death Index. PARTICIPANTS: Australian infants administered a combination trivalent, quadrivalent or hexavalent DTaP vaccine (DTaP types) between January 1999 and December 2010 at 2, 4 and 6 months as part of the primary vaccination series. The study popula

Changes in empyema among U.S. children in the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine era.

BACKGROUND: Parapneumonic empyema, a serious complication of pneumonia, started increasing among U.S. children before the introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in 2000, and continued afterwards. This increase was due in part to pneumococcal serotypes not included in PCV7 that were included in the new 13-valent (PCV13) vaccine introduced in 2010. We assessed changes in the incidence of empyema hospitalizations among U.S. children after PCV13 introduction. METHODS: We calculated annualized empyema hospitalization rates among U.S. children <18years using Nationwide I

Pneumonia in Elderly Australians: Reduction in Presumptive Pneumococcal Hospitalizations but No Change in All-Cause Pneumonia Hospitalizations Following 7-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Studies evaluating long-term trends in hospitalizations coded as pneumonia following introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal vaccine (PCV7) are sparse, especially in adults. We extended our previous analysis to 6.5 years after the "3 + 0" PCV7 schedule was introduced in Australia in 2005. METHODS: We estimated vaccine impact on hospitalizations coded as pneumonia (pneumococcal/lobar, other specified, unspecified, and all-cause) using a multivariate negative binomial regression model of monthly hospitalization rates by age group for the pre-PCV7 (July 1998 to December 2004) and p

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for preventing vaccine-type invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia with consolidation on x-ray in children under two years of age.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia, most commonly caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (Pnc), is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among young children especially in developing countries. Recently, the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Pnc has increased worldwide such that the effectiveness of preventive strategies, like the new pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) on rates of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and pneumonia, needs to be evaluated. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of PCV in reducing the incidence of IPD due to vaccine serotypes (VT) and x-ray confirmed pneumonia with consolid

Thimerosal exposure in infants and developmental disorders: a retrospective cohort study in the United kingdom does not support a causal association.

OBJECTIVE: After concerns about the possible toxicity of thimerosal-containing vaccines in the United States, this study was designed to investigate whether there is a relationship between the amount of thimerosal that an infant receives via diphtheria-tetanus-whole-cell pertussis (DTP) or diphtheria-tetanus (DT) vaccination at a young age and subsequent neurodevelopmental disorders. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using 109 863 children who were born from 1988 to 1997 and were registered in general practices in the United Kingdom that contributed to a research database. Invasive pneumococcal disease in England and Wales: what is the true burden and what is the potential for prevention using 7 valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine?

BACKGROUND: The annual reported incidence rates for laboratory confirmed invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) underestimate the true burden of invasive disease attributable to pneumococcal infection. AIMS: To estimate the proportion of "unspecified" mortality of infectious cause in infants and young children aged 1 month to 4 years reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in England and Wales that could reasonably be attributed to IPD, thereby revising the total number of deaths per year potentially attributable to IPD, and producing a more accurate figure for the number of deaths

Global burden of Shigella infections: implications for vaccine development and implementation of control strategies.

Few studies provide data on the global morbidity and mortality caused by infection with Shigella spp.; such estimates are needed, however, to plan strategies of prevention and treatment. Here we report the results of a review of the literature published between 1966 and 1997 on Shigella infection. The data obtained permit calculation of the number of cases of Shigella infection and the associated mortality occurring worldwide each year, by age, and (as a proxy for disease severity) by clinical category, i.e. mild cases remaining at home, moderate cases requiring outpatient care, and severe cas
