We report on two cases of spontaneous intramural rupture and haematoma formation in the oesophagus. This is an unusual and often misdiagnosed condition. Its diagnosis relies on the history and a barium swallow. Instrumentation can result in further damage to the oesophagus and should be avoided. Treatment is conservative and results in resolution of the haematoma and a return to normal swallowing.

Colo-rectal perforations during barium enema are exceptional, but very serious. They give rise to a retro- or intra-peritoneal septic barioma. These complications are uncommon, but can be very serious. They are dominated by perforations, in the case of barium enemas. The use of rigid canulas and/or balloons are often implicated in rectal perforations which occur most readily in rectal tissue damaged by a biopsy. Severe electrolyte disturbances developed after the administration of hypertonic phosphate enemas in 2 chronically obstipated cats. Taking into consideration indications and contraindications the coloscopy is a valuable diagnostic method in the programme of the diagnostics of colon diseases after the application of rectoscopy and contrast enema in the colon, which was well tolerated by our patients up to the old age. We studied the usefulness of anorectal manometry in excluding Hirschsprung's disease in 25 neonates with signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction. An intraluminal pressure transducer or perfused side-opening catheters were used to evaluate anal tone, anal rhythmicity, and internal sphincter relaxation during rectal distention. Bowel control was studied in 66 children operated by Ikeda's Z-shaped anastomosis for Hirschsprung's disease. In recent years patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) have experienced longterm survival and have demonstrated a number of intra-abdominal complications. The etiology of Ogilvie's syndrome is unknown, and associated medical illnesses are varied and often extra-abdominal. Colonoscopy is the only major advancement in the diagnosis of colonic diseases since the first barium-enema examination was performed in 1905. The indications are many and contraindications few. If colonoscopy is performed with care, it is safe and the results are rewarding. Patient comfort, integrity, and dignity are essential for the success of the procedure. Five hundred sixty-two colonoscopies were performed during a four-year period in Ife, Nigeria (1978 to 1982). The indications for colonoscopy are discussed and the results presented.
