USAG-1/SOSTDC1 as a Candidate Target for Periodontal Regeneration: Biological Rationale, Knowledge Gaps, and Future Directions.

BACKGROUND: Uterine Sensitization-Associated Gene-1 (USAG-1), also known as SOSTDC1, is a bifunctional antagonist of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and Wnt signalling-two pathways that are central not only to tooth development but to the entire repertoire of periodontal tissue biology. Current periodontal regenerative therapy relies on exogenous BMP delivery and barrier membranes, approaches with significant limitations in predictability and tissue specificity. The recent entry of anti-USAG-1 antibody therapy into early-phase human clinical trials, with congenital tooth agenesis as the lead

Temperature and Irrigation-Frequency Treatments Modulate Phytochemical Profiles and Antioxidant Capacity in Guzmania stenostachya and Werauhia macrochlamys.

Information on how temperature and irrigation-frequency treatments modify secondary metabolism in Bromeliaceae remains limited, particularly for poorly studied species such as Guzmania stenostachya and Werauhia macrochlamys. This study integrated the characterization of the phytochemical profile, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity to evaluate the responses of both species under controlled temperature and irrigation-frequency conditions. Hydroethanolic extracts were analyzed using the Folin-Ciocalteu, ABTS, and DPPH assays and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Sp

Volatile Compound Profile as a Biomarker of the Ripening Stage of Cornelian Cherry Fruits.

This study aims to evaluate, for the first time, the profile of volatile compounds (VCs) at four different ripening stages of cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L. cultivar 'Bolestraszycki') fruits: unripe (green), semi-ripe (pale orange and light red), and fully ripe (dark red), to indicate specific volatile markers describing fruit ripening stages. The evolution of aroma VCs was investigated using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) combined with headspace-SPME extraction. Aldehydes and alcohols dominated the VC profile of cornelian cherry fruits, accounting for 18.2-54.7% and 20.0-45.9%,

Conversion of DNA Copy Number Ratios to Mass Fractions for Quantifying Chicken Adulteration in Duck Meat by Digital PCR.

Meat adulteration, particularly the substitution of duck with chicken, threatens food authenticity, consumer trust, and regulatory compliance. However, converting DNA copy number measurements into meat mass fractions remains challenging. This study developed a digital PCR (dPCR)-based quantitative for determining chicken in duck. Singleplex and duplex dPCR assays targeting single-copy nuclear genes specific to chicken, duck and the conserved myostatin gene were developed and optimized. Five sets of binary chicken-in-duck mixtures were prepared and analyzed across 0-100% (w/w) to account for bi

Unexpected Localization of AGP Epitopes in the Plastids of Aldrovanda vesiculosa: New Questions About the Distribution of These Epitopes in Angiosperms.

Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are the glycoproteins that are characteristic of plant cells (except for some algae) and are essential for cell function (cell-cell communication, cell adhesion, cell expansion, cell-wall organization, and signaling) but also for the development of roots, shoots, leaves, flowers, and reproductive structures. They occur inside and on the surface of plant cells, but mainly at the interface between the plasma membrane and the cell wall. Reports on the occurrence of arabinogalactan proteins in plastids are very rare and unclear. Our goal was to determine whether AGP

Activation of KCa3.1 K+ Channel Suppresses COX2- and ARG1-Dependent Immunosuppressive Metabolic Programs in THP-1-Derived M2-like Macrophages.

M2-like macrophages contribute to the establishment of immunosuppressive microenvironments through coordinated activation of inflammatory and metabolic programs. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) catalyzes prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production, whereas arginase-1 (ARG1) hydrolyzes L-arginine (ARG) to ornithine (ORN) and urea. However, the ion channel-dependent mechanisms governing these immunometabolic pathways remain poorly defined. Here, we examined the role of the Ca2+-activated K+ channel KCa3.1 in regulating COX2 and ARG1 in THP-1-derived M2-like macrophages. COX2 and ARG1 were markedly upregulated du

Common-Garden Transcriptomes Distinguish Leaf-Form-Associated from Site-Associated Expression in Zygophyllum xanthoxylum.

Zygophyllum xanthoxylum (Bunge) Maxim. is a dominant, deep-rooted shrub of the temperate deserts of north-western China whose leaflets range from comparatively flat and broad to slender and terete, but the molecular basis of this variation has rarely been reported. We compared three accessions from contrasting desert habitats-one flat-leaved, from a shaded high-altitude valley, and two rod-leaved, from open full-sun sites. The accessions differed in the leaflet blade but not in the petiole, the flat-leaved accession bearing shorter and much wider leaflets with a width-to-length ratio almost fo

Nonlinear Dose-Response Association Between Exercise Intensity and Urinary Liver-Type Fatty Acid-Binding Protein in Young Men: A Piecewise Threshold Analysis.

High-intensity physical exercise can induce temporary renal hemodynamic strain and subclinical tubular injury, yet the exact dose-response relationship remains poorly defined. This study investigated the relationship between exercise intensity and urinary liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) concentrations, a sensitive marker of proximal tubular stress, to identify an exploratory intensity threshold. We conducted an observational cohort study of 285 healthy young men undergoing a routine 20 min physical training session. Exercise intensity was quantified as metabolic equivalents of t
