Ninety-nine black colorectal cancer patients and 280 matched controls from hospitals and multiphasic health checkup clinics were interviewed about past dietary habits and other traits. The colon cancer cases tended to report less frequent use of foods with at least 0.5% fiber content than did their controls. Authors experience in the Dixon's operation regarding the surgical treatment of cancer of the rectum and recto-sigmoid junction is reviewed. It consists in 224 cases of malignant lesions which were treated by Miles operation (106 cases--47%), Dixon's operation (49 cases--21%), palliation anterior resection (16 cases--7%), other operations (53 cases--24%). Fifty-four endoscopically missed colonic polypoid lesions reveal the limitations of colonic endoscopy. Colonoscopy failed to identify 31 of the lesions, whereas 24 lesions were initially missed by proctosigmoidoscopy. One polypoid tumor of the rectosigmoid junction was missed by both. The proportion of colorectal cancer occurring above the rectosigmoid junction has been increasing over time. The 40,771 cases of colorectal carcinoma reported to the Connecticut Tumor Registry from 1940 through 1973 were analyzed to determine the incidence in the ascending colon, the transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon, and the rectum. The numbers of cases, the proportion, and incidence rates of cancer in the ascending colon and sigmoid have increased over the 34 years. The increases were greatest among people over 65 years old. With good technique it is possible to detect small polyps in the large intestine with a barium enema examination. The radiological appearences and visibility of villous papillomas in 84 barium enema examinations from patients with both benign and malignant villous papillomas in the rectum, rectosigmoideal junction and the sigmoid loop were studied. In 75% of the examinations the tumour was visible. A specific radiological diagnosis of non invasive villous papilloma was made in 33% and the correct malignant diagnosis in 8/13 cases.
