Supraglottic airway devices versus endotracheal tube in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The use of supraglottic airway devices (SGADs) is still controversial in paediatric otorhinolaryngological surgeries. We conducted this review and analysis to compare SGADs to endotracheal tubes (ETTs) regarding the feasibility of their use in children. METHODS: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that compared SGADs versus ETTs in patients ≤18 years undergoing adenotonsillectomy surgery under general anaesthesia were searched from PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Scopus, and Embase till November 2024 and re-examined on 31 August 2025. Exposures to humidifier disinfectant and various health conditions in Korean based on personal exposure assessment data of claimants for compensation.

BACKGROUND: Humidifier disinfectants (HDs) were commonly used household chemicals to prevent microbial growth in a humidifier water tank in South Korea. A growing body of evidence has indicated that its airborne exposure can induce severe lung injury. However, there has been low awareness of other health outcomes in HD users. This study aimed to evaluate health conditions appealed by claimants for compensation in relation with an increased exposure to HD. METHODS: From survey data of personal HD exposure assessment of claimants for compensation in Korea, we included a total of 4,179 subjects

Surgical Site Infections in Major Head and Neck Surgeries Involving Pedicled Flap Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate surgical site infections (SSI) after pedicled reconstruction in head and neck surgery. METHODS: Records of patients with pedicled flap reconstructions between 2009 and 2014 at Massachusetts Eye and Ear were reviewed. Onset of SSI or fistula ≤30 days postoperatively was noted. A free flap cohort was reviewed for comparison. RESULTS: Two hundred and eight pedicled reconstructions were performed for cancer (83%), osteoradionecrosis (7%), and other reasons (10%). Most (72%) cases were clean-contaminated and American Society of Anesthesiologists classification 3 or higher (

[Ex-vivo-chemoresponse testing of head and neck cancer: an old hat?].

Reliable prediction of the chance of a successful treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma by cytostatics and targeting therapies would be very valuable, since HNSCC due to their heterogenic biology mostly respond non-uniformly and moreover with low response rates. To raise the prospect of chemotherapy by using multimodal therapies usually goes hand in hand with a higher incidence of severe adverse events and acute toxicity but also chemo-associated increased cancer risk following successful treatment. In addition, the increasing numbers of treatment options without availability of r

The role of topical antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing contaminated head and neck surgery with flap reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Patients undergoing contaminated head and neck surgery with flap reconstruction have wound infection rates of 20% to 25% with parenteral antibiotic prophylaxis. Studies suggest that perioperative antimicrobial mouthwash reduces oropharyngeal flora and may prevent wound infections. We hypothesized that the addition of topical antibiotics to a parenteral prophylactic regimen would reduce the incidence of wound infection in these high-risk patients. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a randomized, prospective clinical trial. METHODS: Patients received either 1) parenteral piperac

CO2 laser in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery: a retrospective analysis of complications.

A retrospective review was conducted of all patients undergoing CO2 laser surgery by members of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School from January 1, 1980 through December 31, 1981; 204 cases were identified and all are included in this report. Early in our department's experience with laser surgery, an endotracheal tube fire occurred. This incident precipitated a departmental review of complications associated with the use of the CO2 laser and resulted in the formulation of a laser safety protocol. All patients in this group were trea
