INTRODUCTION: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a critical cardiovascular emergency frequently treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Despite its benefits, PCI is associated with a substantial risk of periprocedural myocardial infarction (PMI), particularly among patients receiving multiple stents. This study aims to explore the incidence and determinants of PMI in ACS patients undergoing planned PCI in a clinically stable setting.
METHODS: This retrospective single-center study enrolled ACS patients undergoing planned PCI in a clinically stable setting between June 2018 and Au

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study aims to evaluate the global burden of adverse effects of medical treatment (AEMT) using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021.
METHODS: Data were extracted from the GBD 2021, covering 204 countries/territories from 1990 to 2021. AEMT was defined using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes, encompassing complications from medical procedures, treatments, or healthcare exposures. Estimates were categorized into fatal and non-fatal outcomes and stratified by age, sex, year, and covariates, including the Socio-demographic Index (SDI). Mortality-incidence ratios (MIRs

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity among females worldwide. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we provided an updated comprehensive assessment of the epidemiological trends, disease burden, and risk factors associated with breast cancer globally, regionally, and nationally from 1990 to 2023.
METHODS: Breast cancer incidence, mortality, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were estimated by age and sex for 204 countries and te

OBJECTIVES: Routine antimicrobial prophylaxis (AMP) for preventing bacteraemia and infection during paediatric gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy is not recommended and is reserved for high-risk scenarios. However, in the unique group of children with intestinal failure (IF) and a central venous catheter (CVC), the incidence of post-endoscopic fever (PEF) and infection and the usefulness of AMP in protecting the indwelling catheter are unknown. This study evaluated fever and infection rates post-endoscopy, and the role of AMP in children with IF and CVC.
METHODS: This retrospective single-centre

AIM: We aim to investigate the optimal timing for surgical interventions to maximize patient benefit.
BACKGROUND: The guidelines recommending a minimum deferral of 6 months for non-cardiac surgeries following drug-eluting stent percutaneous coronary intervention (DES-PCI) do not adequately address the requirements for individuals undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgery (GCS).
METHODS: The study encompassed 2501 patients treated from January 2017 to December 2021, all of whom underwent GCS within 1 year after DES-PCI. We conducted an analysis by comparing the occurrence of major adverse ca

BACKGROUND: Lower respiratory infections (LRIs) remain the world's leading infectious cause of death. This analysis from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 provides global, regional, and national estimates of LRI incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), with attribution to 26 pathogens, including 11 newly modelled pathogens, across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023. With new data and revised modelling techniques, these estimates serve as an update and expansion to GBD 2021. Through these estimates, we also aimed to

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the predictive factors associated with transient urine incontinence (TUI) following holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a prospectively maintained database containing the first 149 consecutive HoLEP cases between June 2022 and December 2023. The study recorded several patient characteristics, and preoperative data such as IPSS score, total gland volume, preoperative catheterization, Qmax, and PVR volume were collected. During the operation, data on tota

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Children with chronic intestinal failure (IF) require a long-term central venous catheter (CVC) for provision of parenteral nutrition. Vascular, mechanical and infectious complications such as central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) may lead to progressive loss of venous access sites. Handling and management of CVCs therefore play an important role. Our vascular rehabilitation concept (VRC) is a core component of our intestinal rehabilitation program (IRP) and consists of an education program, optimization of skin care, catheter fixation and lock solution, an

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with several chronic diseases, including erectile dysfunction (ED). The association of OSAS and ED is far more common than might be found by chance; the treatment of OSAS with non-invasive positive airway pressure therapy is associated with improvement of respiratory symptoms, and may contribute to the improvement of associated conditions, such as ED.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and acceptability of non-invasive positive airway pressure therapy for improving erectile dysfunction in OSAS.

Perioperative management of antithrombotic therapy in patients treated with coronary stents undergoing surgery remains poorly defined. Importantly, surgery represents a common reason for premature treatment discontinuation, which is associated with an increased risk in mortality and major adverse cardiac events. However, maintaining antithrombotic therapy to minimize the incidence of perioperative ischemic complications may increase the risk of bleeding complications. Although guidelines provide some recommendations with respect to the perioperative management of antithrombotic therapy, these

OBJECTIVE: To identify if any preoperative variables are associated with postoperative complications after pediatric sacral neuromodulation (SNM).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of all patients undergoing SNM with an implantable pulse generator at our institution was performed. Postoperative infection, lead migration, lead breakage, and need for reoperation were recorded in a prospective database. We collected demographic information and indication for the procedure. We defined indication for procedure as either primarily bowel or primarily bladder symptoms. Multivariate analysis was used to

BACKGROUND: Total pelvic exenteration (TPE) is a rare operation in which the pelvic contents are removed entirely. Several options for pelvic floor and vaginal reconstruction have been described including transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) or deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps. The transverse musculocutaneous gracilis (TMG) flap has been introduced for breast reconstruction as a free flap. We adopted the pedicled TMG flap for reconstructions after TPE. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of this method in the literature.
METHODS: Between Novem
