Analysis of intracerebral abscesses in Deep Brain Stimulation and association with hardware-related wound complications.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for various neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease. However, its increasing use has highlighted the risk of serious complications, such as intracerebral abscesses and hardware-related wound infections. While hardware-related infections are common, intracerebral abscesses remain rare. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a retrospective analysis of DBS-associated intracerebral abscesses and hardware-related wound complications, alongside an evaluation of contributing factors observed over 13 years at our DBS center. Drug-eluting stent versus bare metal stent for symptomatic intracranial stenosis: a comparative systematic review and meta-analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial atherosclerotic artery stenosis (ICAS) is a major cause of ischemic stroke globally and is associated with poor recanalization rates, high recurrence, and adverse functional outcomes. The use of stents has been explored as a treatment option to improve outcomes, despite concerns over procedure-related complications and in-stent restenosis (ISR). This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of drug-eluting stents (DES) versus bare metal stents (BMS) in treating patients with symptomatic ICAS (sICAS). METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted a

"Smoker's paradox" in in-hospital outcomes of left ventricular assist device implantation: a population-based analysis of National Inpatient Sample from 2015-2021.

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is a treatment option for advanced heart failure. The relationship between smoking and perioperative outcomes in LVAD implantation remains inconclusive, as evidence has been limited to single-center studies. This study aimed to examine the association between smoking and in-hospital outcomes of LVAD implantation in a large-scale population-based analysis. Patients who underwent LVAD implantation were selected from National Inpatient Sample from Q4 2015-2021. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare in-hospital outcomes between smo

Assessment of pesticide handling and use practices and associated health and safety concerns among rice farmers, in Northern Iran.

Examination of farmers' behaviors regarding pesticide application is crucial because of their influential impacts on exposure levels and general health. This research assessed pesticide-related behaviors among 151 rice farmers in Gilan Province, Iran, with a focus on their behaviors before, during, and after pesticide spraying and related health symptoms. The findings indicated that government agencies and pesticide sellers were the main sources of information on pesticides for farmers. About 83% of farmers used storerooms for the safekeeping of pesticides, while only 55% of them reported usin

Risk Factors for Development of Stroke in Patients With Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Support as Destination Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are increasingly used as destination therapy. Although postimplantation stroke rates have been described in the context of bridge-to-transplant or mixed cohorts, stroke development is not well evaluated in patients who receive continuous-flow LVAD with a destination therapy indication. This report characterizes the stroke profile of a modern institutional cohort of patients undergoing destination therapy and evaluates their risk factors for stroke onset. METHODS: Patients implanted with continuous-flow LVAD as destination the

Association Between Collar Type and Incidence of Cervical Spinal Cord Injury in Trauma Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Debate exists on how to best immobilize the cervical spine in the prehospital setting. Rigid cervical collars have been considered the standard of care for both the prevention and care of patients with suspected cervical spinal cord injury (c-SCI). Recently, soft c-collars have begun replacing rigid collars as they are better tolerated by patients. The aim of this study was to compare the safety of these 2 devices by evaluating the prevalence of c-SCI in patients immobilized with a rigid c-collar with those in a soft c-collar. METHODS: A retrospective review of data collected for t

Development and preliminary validation of a cognitive-physical frailty index in an older adult cohort: The NEDICES study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a multidimensional syndrome characterised by reduced physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. While traditional frailty models focus primarily on physical decline, emerging evidence supports the integration of cognitive domains for a more comprehensive assessment. We wished to develop and preliminarily validate a cognitive-physical frailty index using data from a large, prospective population-based cohort of older adults in central Spain. METHODS: We constructed a frailty index based on 12 variables spanning physical, cognitive, subj

Comparison of Cerebral Micro-Embolization Detected by Transcranial Doppler Examination Between Radiofrequency Ablation and Pulsed Field Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) can establish pulmonary vein isolation via irreversible electroporation and is believed to reduce overall complications; however, periprocedural stroke has also been reported after PFA procedures. Assessment of microembolic signals (MES) measured by transcranial doppler (TCD) allows to monitor cerebral embolization during the procedure and to identify higher risk procedural steps. This study was designed to compare the incidence of MES during different procedural steps between two different PFA systems and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). METHODS

Predictors and clinical implications of surgical site infections following glioma resection: a matched case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are uncommon but clinically significant complications following glioma resection, often disrupting postoperative recovery and delaying adjuvant therapy. These patients are particularly susceptible due to several disease- and treatment-related factors. However, data on SSI predictors, outcomes, and optimal management remain limited. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 733 adult primary and recurrent glioma patients who underwent surgical resection between 2009 and 2024. Thirty-six patients with SSIs were matched 1:4 to 144 controls by age and gend
