Rates of Endophthalmitis in Prefilled versus Nonprefilled Syringes for Intravitreal Injections: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

TOPIC: This study compares rates of endophthalmitis after intravitreal injections (IVIs) using prefilled versus nonprefilled syringes (PFSs). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Intravitreal injections are among the most frequently performed medical procedures for retinal disease. Although generally safe, IVIs carry a small risk of endophthalmitis, leading to devastating vision loss. Given the high volume of injections performed annually, minimizing risk factors is essential. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Scopus following the Preferred Reporting Item

Pharmacogenomics of steroid-induced ocular hypertension: relationship to high-tension glaucomas and new pathophysiologic insight.

Adverse drug reactions are a frequent cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality. Glucocorticoids (GCs), commonly used to treat inflammatory diseases, alter gene expression with both beneficial and adverse consequences. When used in the eye, GCs cause steroid-induced ocular hypertension (SIOH) in 30-50% of patients, leading to steroid-induced glaucoma. Evidence suggests that predisposition to SIOH is genetically determined. Here we took a pharmacogenomic approach to discover DNA variants associated with SIOH. We identified 44 SNPs of genome-wide significance (p<5E-08) located at 26 risk loci o

Postoperative endophthalmitis rate associated with routine off-label reuse of single-use phacoemulsification cassettes in more than 1,000,000 consecutive surgeries.

According to a 2025 APAO survey, reuse of phacoemulsification tubing and cassettes appears to be more common in Asian-Pacific countries compared to Europe and North America. We analyzed the phacoemulsification postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) rate from 2016 to 2024 at the Aravind Eye Care System's 15 hospital network. Single-use phacoemulsification cassettes were routinely reused all day (off label) at every facility during this 9-year period. The POE rate was 0.01 % in 1,133,959 consecutive cases. This rate was consistent from year to year and compared favorably with contemporaneous POE da

Adverse events of trabecular micro-bypass minimally invasive glaucoma surgery devices: a five-year analysis from the FDA MAUDE database.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, 76 million people around the world had glaucoma, and by 2040, that number is predicted to rise to 111.8 million. Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) has become an effective method to treat open-angle glaucoma. It lowers the pressure inside the eye by improving the drainage mechanism of the eye's aqueous humor. MIGS devices, such as the iStent® and Hydrus®, aid in aqueous outflow and patency maintenance. However, their long-term safety and efficacy require ongoing post-market surveillance across diverse patient populations. It's important to know how safe implanted d
