PURPOSE: It has been suggested that it is safer to remove the Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) in paediatric patients when they are deeply anaesthetised than when they are awake. However, the evidence regarding this recommendation is contradictory. The efficacy of prophylactic vena caval filters (VCF) in reducing morbidity and mortality from pulmonary embolism (PE) in high-risk trauma patients has been shown, but minimal follow-up data is currently available. VCFs were prophylactically placed in 110 patients between August 1991 and June 1995. There was an early VCF complication rate of 7%. Twenty-two patients died; the remaining 88 patients formed the basis for the follow-up study. In the past years increasing attention has been paid to possible adverse health effects of mercury exposure from dental amalgam fillings. To evaluate possible health effects from amalgam fillings, dental status registered by specially trained nurses was obtained from 587 subjects included in the ongoing Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA). Because of donor scarcity, 12 (39%) of a series of 31 Novacor left ventricular assist system recipients required mechanical circulatory support for an average of 125 days before transplantation (range, 61 to 303 days).
