OBJECTIVE: We investigated human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and detected anal squamous intraepithelial lesions by modified liquid-based cytology (LBC) and p16/Ki67 dual-staining.

The term of "cloacogenic anal carcinoma", "cloacogenic zone" and "cloacal membrane" have been widely used, but the term of "inflammatory cloacogenic polyp" (ICP) was first applied and published by Lobert PF and Henry DA in 1981. Here we present three cases of ICP to stress its inflammatory property, predilection to invade cloacogenic zone of anus and polypoid shape, and to differentiate it from its related lesions as concise as possible.

The bacteriology of anorectal sepsis in a district general hospital has been reviewed to see whether the information gained helped patient management. Forty-six patients with anorectal sepsis were reviewed, underlying fistulas were identified in nine patients (19.5%). Bacteroides species were not routinely subtyped in the department. The results after surgical repair of traumatic anal incontinence in 23 patients, 12 with simple lesions and 11 with complicated lesions, were analyzed. Overlapping suture was the standard technique in simple lesions, whereas additional procedures were necessary in complicated lesions. Fifteen patients (65 percent; 95 percent confidence limits: 43-83) had excellent results and seven (30 percent; 13-53) had acceptable results. In patients with simple lesions, the result was excellent in nine (75 percent; 43-94), and was excellent also in six patients with complicated lesions (55 percent; 23-83).
