Concomitant anorectal and posterior urethral injury caused by straddle injury: A case report.

Straddle injury is the most common cause of genital injuries in children and is defined as an injury resulting from a blunt impact to the perineum due to a fall onto a hard object. This type of injury tends to affect the anterior perineum, and the perianal area is usually spared. Herein, we report a unique case of straddle injury that resulted in concomitant anorectal and posterior urethral injuries due to an atypical impact to the posterior perineum.

AI driven interactive extraction of tomographic ultrasound imaging sequences for anal sphincter defects.

Anal incontinence is common after childbirth, often due to structural anal sphincter injury, affecting up to 42% of postpartum women, with 6% experiencing stool loss. Exo-anal ultrasound aids in detecting anal sphincter injury through tomographic ultrasound imaging (TUI), but manual TUI sequence extraction is expert-dependent and time-intensive. In this international multi-centre study, we developed and independently evaluated the performance of an interactive AI-assisted pipeline for automated TUI positioning and alignment with real-time adjustability, from exo-anal ultrasound images acquired

Preoperative anorectal manometry is associated with cuffitis but not proximal pouch inflammation after IPAA creation.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) commonly experience postoperative inflammatory complications, including pouchitis and cuffitis. While pelvic floor dysfunction has been associated with these complications, the predictive value of preoperative anorectal manometry (ARM) remains unclear. We evaluated the association between abnormal preoperative ARM and postoperative inflammatory outcomes in IPAA patients. METHODS: In this historical cohort study we assessed IPAA patients who underwent preoperative ARM with ileostomy closure

The impact of delayed reporting on forensic evidence recovery in anal sexual assault cases: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed presentation after sexual assault reduces the probability of detecting injuries or recovering biological evidence. Evidence specific to anal-route allegations and physical findings is comparatively limited. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 222 consecutive cases alleging anal-route sexual assault seen at a university forensic clinic in Türkiye (2010-2014). Examinations included standardized external anogenital inspection under magnification (colposcopy) and full-body assessment; anoscopy was not routinely available. The primary outcome was acute physical findings (compo

A three generation family with VACTERL association is found to have a rare form of diamond-blackfan anaemia.

The spectrum of congenital malformations in VACTERL association varies among patients and can be differentially diagnosed with CHARGE syndrome, Fanconi anaemia, and others (reviewed in Solomon 2011). Despite overlapping clinical findings, the genetic causes of these diseases are distinct. In this context, unbiased whole genome sequencing can assist in differential diagnoses, as well as identify new gene-disease associations. In this report, we demonstrate that whole genome sequencing of a proband with suspected VACTERL association revealed two gene variants in the ribosomal genes RPL18 (NM_000

A preoperative MRI pelvic multiparameter nomogram for predicting sphincter preservation and operative difficulty in laparoscopic total mesorectal excision for ultra-low rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Sphincter preservation (SP) during laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (LaTME) for low rectal cancer is challenged by a deep, narrow pelvis. Robust, MRI-based predictors for both SP success and operative difficulty are lacking. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 275 consecutive patients undergoing LaTME (development cohort, Jan 2022-Feb 2024). An independent, temporal validation cohort (n = 118; Mar-Dec 2024) from the same institution was used. Eight predefined pelvic MRI parameters were measured. The primary outcome was SP failure (conversion to abdominoperineal res

Association between anogenital distance and hypospadias: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: The association between hypospadias, its severity, and anogenital distance remains inconsistent. This study aims to investigate the association between anogenital distance and hypospadias through a meta-analysis. We conducted a comprehensive search in international databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, Medline) and Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, VIP database). We searched for studies on the association between anogenital distance and hypospadias. The search period extended until November 1, 2025. Thirteen studies inv

Results of manual colo-anal anastomosis for lower rectal cancer. A multicenter cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Manual colo-anal anastomosis (ACAm) is a technique used in patients with lower rectal cancer who are candidates for sphincter-preserving surgery when mechanical anastomosis is not feasible. Long-term outcomes, particularly regarding anastomotic failure and functional results, remain limited. This study analyzes the outcomes achieved with this technique. METHODS: Retrospective multicenter study of a cohort of 155 patients with ACAm between 2009 and 2018. The study included 116 cases of conventional ACAm (CAAW) and 39 with two-stage technique (TCA). The primary objective was to an

VACTERL association in screened patients with esophageal atresia: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive VACTERL screening is crucial in children with esophageal atresia (EA), as undetected anomalies can delay diagnosis and treatments for these problems. Screening practices vary widely in the literature, however. This study aimed to assess the proportion of EA patients receiving comprehensive VACTERL screening, examine screening changes over time and determine the prevalence of additional anomalies, VACTERL association and genetic diagnoses. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single center, including all neonates born with EA between 2000 and 2024.

Clinical Diversity in Currarino Syndrome: Insights From Monozygotic Twins and a Single-Center Retrospective Study.

Currarino syndrome (CS) is a congenital disorder caused by MNX1 gene mutation, resulting in abnormal caudal cell mass development. Clinical presentation varies from severe to mild forms. Classic triad of CS includes sacral agenesis, presacral mass, and anorectal malformation (ARM). We report a pair of monozygotic twins, both with the MNX1: c.780C>G mutation, presenting with different clinical phenotypes of Currarino syndrome (CS). Both were suspected of anorectal atresia in utero, and postnatal diagnosis confirmed CS with tethered cord syndrome (TCS). They underwent staged surgeries, with norm

Perianal Sonographic Approach to Fistula-in-Ano and Perianal Abscesses: A Pictorial Review.

Fistula-in-ano and perianal abscesses are common conditions in pediatric patients. Recently, the perianal ultrasound approach has been reported as a useful method for evaluating anal and perianal lesions. However, this technique remains unfamiliar to many sonographers. In this pictorial review, we aimed to describe the basic sonographic approach for assessing fistula-in-ano and perianal abscesses. A sagittal view of the anal canal is obtained by placing the probe on the proctodeum parallel to the intergluteal cleft, providing a longitudinal image of the anus and rectum. The probe is then gentl

Subpubic arch angle and occult obstetric anal spincter injury in primiparous women: a prospective observational study.

Occult obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASI) are frequently underdiagnosed after vaginal delivery and may contribute to long-term pelvic floor dysfunction. Maternal pelvic anatomy has been suggested to influence the risk of sphincter injury; however, the role of the subpubic arch angle remains insufficiently explored. This prospective observational study included 300 primiparous women aged 18–40 years who underwent vaginal delivery with mediolateral episiotomy. The subpubic arch angle was measured antenatally using transperineal ultrasonography. All participants underwent ultrasound evaluat
