Air Travel Safety in Postoperative Breast Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review.

Air travel has long been a dilemma in post-breast cancer surgery patients. Anecdotal reports have described adverse outcomes on surgical wound, implants, and lymphedema during air travel. This review aims to evaluate the best evidence from the literature concerning the air travel safety in breast cancer patients. A comprehensive review was performed of the Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane databases using a predefined strategy. Retrieved studies were independently screened and rated for relevance. Data were extracted by 2 researchers. We reviewed the best evidence on air travel safety in p

Treatment of toxic epidermal necrolysis by a multidisciplinary team. A review of literature and treatment results.

BACKGROUND: Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) are mucocutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, usually to drugs or their metabolites. TEN is the most severe involving greater than 30% of the total body surface area (TBSA). Management of these patients usually benefits from a large multidisciplinary team for both wound and medical management. Treatment of these patients varies between centers and physicians and there is lack of a standardized treatment protocol in the medical literature. OBJECTIVES: To review the literature and complete a retrospective review of

U.S. Epidemiology of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a distinctive type of T-cell lymphoma that arises around breast implants. Although rare, all cases with adequate history have involved a textured breast implant. The objective of this study was to determine the U.S. incidence and lifetime prevalence of breast implant-associated ALCL in women with textured breast implants. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of documented cases of breast implant-associated ALCL in the United States from 1996 to 2015. The incidence and prevalence were determined based on a litera

Does the Use of Acellular Dermal Matrix Increase Postoperative Complications of the First-Stage Reconstruction of Immediate Expander-Implant Breast Reconstruction: A Matched Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Controversy exists regarding complications associated with the use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM). This likely stems from the heterogeneous and unmatched patient characteristics in study groups. The purpose of this study was to analyze complications in a matched cohort to identify whether ADM use increased postoperative complications of the first-stage immediate expander-implant breast reconstructions. METHODS: A retrospective matched-cohort study was performed. We retrospectively reviewed prospectively collected data from patients who underwent immediate expander-implant breast re

Desmoid Tumor and Silicone Breast Implant Surgery: Is There Really a Connection? A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Desmoid tumors are borderline tumors of the connective tissue, arising in the musculo-aponeurotic stromal elements. A desmoid tumor (DT) has an infiltrative and locally aggressive growth pattern and usually does not metastasize; however, it has a high recurrence and complication rate. DT located in the breast (BDT) represents a rare extra-abdominal form. Recently, the presence of breast silicone implants was suggested by several researchers as a risk factor for developing BDT. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this review is to investigate the possible correlation between BDT and breast imp

Longitudinal Ultrasound Study of Breast Implant Rupture Over a Six-Year Interval.

BACKGROUND: Silicone gel-filled implants as opposed to saline-filled breast implants are the most commonly used breast implants in Europe, and this has recently also become the case in the United States. Modern implants have a multiple layer silicone shell and high to very high levels of cohesive silicone gel inside. Although breast magnetic resonance imaging is at present considered the gold standard imaging method for breast implant rupture detection, breast ultrasound (US) imaging is still the first-step investigation in Europe. The aim of this study was to verify whether or not the steplad

Predictors and consequences of intraoperative microvascular problems in autologous breast reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Microvascular complications can have devastating consequences in breast reconstruction. Because of the relatively low rate of complications, it can be difficult to identify significant predictors of failure. This study explores the importance of intraoperative microvascular problems in the development of postoperative complications and seeks to identify risk factors that may predict such events. METHODS: Three hundred and eighty-four patients undergoing 562 microvascular breast reconstructions were eligible for inclusion in this study. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regress
