Radiographic Osseointegration Appears Similar Across Synthetic, Allograft, and Mixed Grafts in Custom 3D-Printed Cage Reconstruction of the Foot and Ankle: A Short Report.

BACKGROUND: Custom 3-dimensionally (3D)-printed titanium cages are increasingly used for managing critically sized bone defects (CSDs) of the foot and ankle. Little is known regarding the optimal bone graft (allograft, synthetic, or mixed) to enhance osseointegration. In this study, we compared radiographic osseointegration across synthetic, allograft, and mixed graft formulations in custom 3D‑printed cage reconstructions of foot/ankle CSDs. METHODS: This was a single-institution retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent foot and ankle reconstruction for CSDs using a custom cage. D

Revision targeted muscle reinnervation for management of neuropathic pain in lower extremity amputees.

INTRODUCTION: Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) surgery is effective for managing neuropathic pain in amputees. However, some patients experience persistent or recurrent pain, for which revision surgery can be considered. We analyzed outcomes and patient characteristics associated with revision TMR performed for pain in the same nerve distribution as the initial procedure. METHODS: Amputees who underwent revision TMR for pain in the same nerve distribution as a prior TMR were prospectively enrolled from a peripheral nerve clinic (2017-2025). Demographics, comorbidities, surgical details, me

Concomitant Venous Disease in Patients with Advanced Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Patient- and Limb-Level Analysis.

Background: Advanced stages of peripheral arterial disease, particularly chronic limb-threatening ischemia, are characterized by unfavorable limb outcomes and a substantial risk of major amputation. Clinical evaluation traditionally focuses on arterial obstruction; however, venous dysfunction may coexist and contribute to local limb pathophysiology in advanced PAD, remaining insufficiently recognized in routine practice. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of consecutive patients with advanced peripheral arterial disease managed at the First Surgical Clinic of the Emergency C

Smartphone-Based Automated Photogrammetry for Reconstruction of Residual Limb Models in Prosthetic Design.

Accurate modeling of residual limb geometry is essential for prosthetic socket design, yet current scanning techniques can be costly, operator-dependent, or impractical for repeated clinical use. This study presents a fully automated, low-cost photogrammetry workflow capable of generating metrically accurate 3D models of lower-limb residual limbs using video and still images acquired with a standard smartphone or a full-frame digital camera. The pipeline integrates adaptive frame selection, deep learning-based background removal, robust metric scaling via ArUco markers, and open-source Structu

The adrenal stress response involves distinct dynamics of both cortisol and corticosterone in the axolotl salamander.

The axolotl is a popular model organism in regenerative biology owing to its ability to regenerate amputated limbs and internal organs. The role of injury-derived signals in initiating the regenerative response is still not well understood, but the potential involvement of the stress response is of interest, as injury and stress are temporally linked. The dominant glucocorticoid response to stress varies among species, with corticosterone generally considered dominant in most amphibians, whereas cortisol predominates in others. Here we characterize the adrenal stress response in the axolotl an

Social determinants of health and risk of lower extremity amputation in patients with peripheral artery disease in Canada: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affected approximately 800 000 Canadians aged 25 years or older in 2015 and it poses a substantial risk of lower extremity amputation (LEA). While clinical risk factors for amputation are well-established, the impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on amputation risk remains unclear, particularly in a Canadian context. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to: (1) synthesise evidence on the associations between multilevel SDoH domains and LEA (both major and/or minor) risk in Canadian PAD patients including intersectional effects of race

Non-pharmacological Interventions for the Prevention and Progression of Diabetic Foot Ulcers in Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Scoping Review.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a common complication of diabetes, significantly impairing patients' quality of life (QoL) and imposing a heavy economic burden. Previous reviews on the prevention of DFUs and their recurrence have indicated that educational interventions alone cannot definitively reduce the incidence of new DFUs or lower limb amputation rates and that non-pharmacological therapies using medical devices face challenges such as cost, the need for technical training, and infrastructure development. This study systematically mapped the existing literature on non-pharmacological the

A Case of Pseudomyogenic Hemangioendothelioma Clinically Mimicking Whitlow With Subsequent Cutaneous Metastasis.

A 30-year-old male developed bloody nodules on the fingertips that clinically mimicked whitlow. Biopsy revealed a vascular tumor showing a sheet-like proliferation of large spindle cells and polygonal atypical cells with pleomorphic nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, including rhabdoid cells. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated positive staining for CD31, FOSB, AE1/AE3, ERG, INI-1, and BRG, whereas negative staining for CAMTA1, confirming the diagnosis of pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma. Digital amputation was performed, but 2 years later, a solitary reddish nodule appeared

Manipulation of a Bent Bare Metal Needle for Breaking Calcified Obstruction via a High-Precision Orifice Puncture Into the Keystone Deep Femoral Artery (Bamboo Hook Technique).

Severely calcified ostial occlusion of the deep femoral artery (DFA) is a condition that is technically challenging to manage. Surgical reconstruction has been traditionally considered the most reliable treatment option, and evidence on feasible endovascular strategies remains limited. Herein, we report the case of a woman in her 80 s who presented with Rutherford class 5 lower-extremity arterial disease and a nonhealing ulcer of the right first toe. A long-segment occlusion of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) with heavy calcification and an ostial occlusion of the DFA were observed on ang
