Effect of transfemoral prosthetic suspension on static and dynamic postural control: A comparison between socket-prostheses and bone-anchored limbs.

BACKGROUND: Transfemoral amputation results in increased fall risk in part through compromised postural control and greater between-limb asymmetry compared to people without amputation. Bone-anchored limbs (BAL) are a rising alternative to socket-type prostheses that may alter postural control. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do static and dynamic postural control and between-limb symmetry compare for people with unilateral transfemoral amputation using a socket-type prosthesis or a BAL? METHODS: Twenty-six people with transfemoral amputation (10 socket/16 BAL) were tested during quiet standing and o

The Australia and New Zealand Diabetic and Ischaemic Foot Outcomes Study (ANZDIFOS).

OBJECTIVE: There is limited high-quality data on the factors that contribute to limb loss in patients with diabetes-related foot disease (DFD) in New Zealand and Australia. Furthermore, wound, ischaemia and foot infection (WIfI) staging has not been validated in the Australasian cohort. The aim of this study was to (1) report on the presentation, management and outcomes of DFD (wound healing, major limb amputation [MLA], amputation-free survival [AFS] and mortality at 1-year), and (2) validate the association of WIfI stage on outcomes. METHODS: This was an observational prospective study of p

Prediction of ankle kinematics and kinetics in stair ascent motion using surface EMG feature inputs of lower extremity muscle combinations.

Recent studies show the relevance of using sEMG signals and extracted features in powered prosthesis control. However, amputation technique determines the availability of residual muscles, and minimizing sensor number is to be preferred. Therefore, (i) limiting the total number of sEMG muscle inputs, (ii) minimizing the inputs from the lower leg muscles, and (iii) completely excluding the lower leg muscles will make the control algorithm economical, flexible, and practical, respectively. Using healthy population data, the aim was to conduct a systematic analysis for ranking possible muscle com

Histologic and immunohistochemical changes in amputated and scarring lizard limb of Scincella tsinlingensis.

Lizard tail regeneration and limb amputation provide contrasting amniote models for regenerative failure. A limb wound healing model was established in 48 Scincella tsinlingensis through standardized surgical amputation protocols, followed by comprehensive anatomical observation, histological evaluation, and immunohistochemical characterization of regenerative processes. Four fibrotic stages-hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling-were delineated through histopathological analysis and further categorized into five histologically distinct stages. Stages I-II (0-9 days post-amput

Role of non-homologous end joining DNA repair during limb regeneration in Ambystoma mexicanum.

BACKGROUND: Ambystoma mexicanum is renowned for its extraordinary regenerative capacity. Regardless of whether progenitor cells arise via dedifferentiation or stem cell activation, these cells must replicate DNA to proliferate before they ultimately differentiate. This rapid cell division increases the likelihood of DNA damage, requiring efficient repair mechanisms. RESULTS: We focused on the non-homologous end joining pathway, responsible for repairing double-strand DNA breaks, and investigated the effects of 2 key components-KU70/80 and LIGIV- using chemical inhibitors STL127705 and SCR130,

Flexor Tendon Tenotomy in Diabetic Toe Ulcers: Evidence and Clinical Application.

Flexor tendon tenotomy (FTT) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for neuropathic toe-tip ulcers in diabetes, caused by claw and hammer toe deformities. By transecting the flexor digitorum longus tendon, FTT reduces distal plantar pressure, promotes healing, and prevents recurrence. Evidence from cohorts, systematic reviews, and randomized trials shows healing rates greater than 90% with rapid closure and fewer recurrences than conservative offloading. Complications are minor, though long-term risks of new ulcers and amputations remain. FTT is guideline-endorsed (IWGDF 2023) as an effect

User preference in the personalized control of an ankle prosthesis: a case study.

PURPOSE: User preference is important for improving the acceptance of assistive robotic devices. However, it is not clear what factors influence user preferences or how it relates with physiological variables, such as muscle activity. METHODS: Three participants with transfemoral amputation walked on a treadmill at a self-selected speed using a knee-ankle prosthesis. In four trials conducted on the same day, participants identified their preferred push-off parameters by self-tuning the magnitude and timing of the assistance using a 2D grid interface through a self-exploration method. They were

Case Report: Destructive deep infection of the foot caused by Neoscytalidium dimidiatum leading to great toe amputation.

We report an invasive deep-tissue infection caused by Neoscytalidium dimidiatum in a diabetic patient in China. Although typically a phytopathogen restricted to superficial human infections, it caused rapid necrosis necessitating hallux amputation. This case highlights the need for clinical awareness regarding the pathogenic potential of N. dimidiatum in immunocompromised hosts.

Vasopressor-Induced Digital Ischemia: Management and Treatment Considerations.

Vasopressor-induced digital ischemia is an uncommon but severe complication of life-preserving therapy in critically ill patients, arising from profound peripheral vasoconstriction that can progress from reversible hypoperfusion to irreversible necrosis and amputation. This review synthesizes current evidence on epidemiology, mechanisms of injury, early recognition, and management strategies relevant to the hand surgeon. Early ischemic changes-digital coolness, discoloration, and delayed capillary refill-may respond to timely interventions, such as active warming, topical nitrates, botulinum t
