Developing Physician Educational Competencies for the Management of Female Genital Cutting: A Call to Action.

Female genital cutting (FGC), also called female genital mutilation, is defined as "all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural, religious, or other nontherapeutic reasons." FGC can have significant health consequences, including multiple physical and psychological complications, throughout the life course. Despite violating numerous human rights and existing legal prohibitions, the practice continues. In the United States, FGC is becoming increasingly prevalent, however, physicians are not

I knew how it feels but couldn't save my daughter; testimony of an Ethiopian mother on female genital mutilation/cutting.

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization defines female genital mutilation/cutting as all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice is common in Ethiopia, especially among Somali (99%) ethnic groups. Even though FGM/C is labeled illegal practice according to the revised 2005 Penal Code of the country, the practice is still responsible for misery of many girls in Ethiopia. METHODS: This personal testimony is presented using woman's own words. Data were collected through in-d

Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for multiple (four) tumors.

BACKGROUND: Nephron sparing surgery (NSS) is well established as the standard of care for most surgical small renal tumors when technically feasible. While the majority of sporadic renal tumors are solitary, multifocal tumors have been reported in 5.4% to 25% of patients with tumors smaller than 5cm. We present a video where we approach, through laparoscopy, four tumors on the same kidney. CASE STUDY: Male, 58y, went through a routine abdominal ultrasound which showed a 5cm left kidney nodule. His MRI pointed a total of 4 nodules on his left kidney. The aspect suggested a papillary cancer due

Partial component-retained two-stage reconstruction for chronic infection after uncemented total hip arthroplasty: results of sixteen cases after five years of follow-up.

PURPOSE: Two-stage reconstruction with total implant removal and re-implantation after infection control is considered the gold standard treatment for infection after hip arthroplasty. However, removal of the well-fixed stem or cup may cause substantial bone loss and other complications, thereby making reconstruction difficult. We evaluated whether an infection post total hip arthroplasty can be treated without removal of the radiographically and clinically well-fixed femoral stem or acetabular cup. METHODS: Patients with a chronic infection after total hip arthroplasty, with a radiographical

Female Genital Mutilation Is a Violation of Reproductive Rights of Women: Implications for Health Workers.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for nonmedical reasons. This coercive practice is still prevalent in many parts of the world, in both developed and developing countries. However, FGM is more prevalent in African countries and some Asian countries. In this study, an attempt has been made to understand the prevalence and practice of FGM worldwide and its adverse effects on women's reproductive health. To fulfill the study objectives, the author collected ev

Chronic post-operative iris prosthesis endophthalmitis in a patient with traumatic aniridia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Post-operative endophthalmitis is a serious complication of intraocular surgery which may present acutely or chronically. Chronic post-operative endophthalmitis is characterized by decreased visual acuity, mild pain, and low-grade uveitis several weeks or months after intraocular surgery which may be responsive to corticosteroids, but recur upon tapering. Low virulence organisms such as Propionibacterium acnes are the most common culprit organisms, and treatment most often consists of both intravitreal antibiotic injections and surgery. Aniridia is a condition defined by total or p

Mini-Laparoscopy for Removal (Partial) of Adnexae at the Time of Hysterectomy.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate our technique of mini-laparoscopic adnexectomy or salpingectomy at the time of total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH). DESIGN: Step-by-step video demonstration of our technique. SETTING: The advantages of laparoscopic surgery have been widely recognized, including improved visualization and exposure, reduced operative trauma owing to smaller incisions and gentler tissue handling, and faster postoperative recovery. Continuing technological developments have allowed the use of smaller-caliber instruments while maintaining a high standard of surgical performance.

Intermittent self-catheterisation for urolgical problems caused by FGM.

This is the fourth and final article in a series on female genital mutilation (FGM). It describes the complications of FGM, with a focus on the urinary ones. FGM refers to all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia and/or damage to other female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified FGM into four types (1-4). Women who have type 3 commonly experience long-term complications of their urological tract. The first-line treatment for type 3 FGM involves surgical defibulation, but this is not always succes

Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon in Chinese children: Report of 19 cases and brief review of literature.

Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP) is life-threatening, charactered by the profound thrombocytopenia and consumptive coagulopathy associated with vascular tumors. The therapy of KMP still remains challenging. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of KMP treated in Nanjing Children's Hospital and Jinling Hospital, China, and brief reviewed the literature on KMP. From Jan. 2005 to Dec. 2014, a total of 19 cases of KMP were enrolled into this study. Laboratory results showed that seven patients had typical disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and others were atypica

Disaccharides Protect Antigens from Drying-Induced Damage in Routinely Processed Tissue Sections.

Drying of the tissue section, partial or total, during immunostaining negatively affects both the staining of tissue antigens and the ability to remove previously deposited antibody layers, particularly during sequential rounds of de-staining and re-staining for multiple antigens. The cause is a progressive loss of the protein-associated water up to the removal of the non-freezable water, a step which abolishes the immunoavailability of the epitope. In order to describe and prevent these adverse effects, we tested, among other substances, sugars, which are known to protect unicellular organism

An experimental study in six fresh human cadavers using a novel approach to avoid abdominal wall incisions in total colectomy: totally transanal laparoendoscopic single-site pull-through colectomy with J-pouch creation.

BACKGROUND: The use of transanal laparoscopic access to completely avoid abdominal wall incisions represents the most current evolution in minimally invasive surgery. The combination of single-site surgery and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES™) can be used for totally transanal laparoendoscopic pull-through colectomy with J-pouch creation (TLPC-J). The aim of the present study was to provide evidence for the feasibility of TLPC-J in adult human cadavers. METHODS: TLPC-J was performed in six fresh adult human cadavers. The procedure involved endorectal submucosal dissecti

["Protect the next generation": promote the end of female genital mutilation in the Kayes health district in Mali].

Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. FGM is not just a public health problem, but a violation of the human rights of girls and women. Equilibres & Populations and AMSOPT are developing a pilot project designed to promote abandonment of FGM in the Kayes health district by demonstrating that social change is possible and reproducible. The strategy is based on the organized diffusion of change among communities linked by marital ties

Evidence of regression of fibropapillomas in juvenile green turtles Chelonia mydas caught in Niterói, southeast Brazil.

Fibropapillomatosis is a disease characterized by cutaneous tumors affecting all marine turtle species, but mostly Chelonia mydas. The disease was first reported in 1938, and since then, the number of sightings has been increasing over the years. This disease can cause many complications in the affected animal and can lead to death, and is thus included in the many threats to marine turtle populations. It is still not known for certain what causes this disease, although many studies indicate a herpesvirus as the main etiologic agent. The incidence of fibropapillomatosis is rarely reported in a

Description, microhabitat selection and infection patterns of sealworm larvae (Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex, nematoda: ascaridoidea) in fishes from Patagonia, Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Third-stage larvae of the Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex (also known as sealworms) have been reported in at least 40 marine fish species belonging to 21 families and 10 orders along the South American coast. Sealworms are a cause for concern because they can infect humans who consume raw or undercooked fish. However, despite their economic and zoonotic importance, morphological and molecular characterization of species of Pseudoterranova in South America is still scarce. METHODS: A total of 542 individual fish from 20 species from the Patagonian coast of Argentina were

A realist synthesis of controlled studies to determine the effectiveness of interventions to prevent genital cutting of girls.

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a traditional practice which involves the partial or total removal or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Although current trends indicate that the practice is becoming less prevalent, as many as 30 million girls may still be at risk of FGM/C. Given the associated risks and violation of the human rights of girls and women, the practice is discouraged through preventative interventions. AIMS: To systematically review the effectiveness of anti-FGM/C interventions, applying a realist perspective. METHODS: Th
