Female Supine Urination Tech: Patent Landscape & Indicators.

PURPOSE: Female urination in the supine position is a frequent bedside need, yet common workarounds (bedpans, diapers, improvised receptacles) can be uncomfortable, increase caregiver workload, and contribute to potentially avoidable urinary catheterization. We mapped the patent landscape of non-invasive female urine-collection technologies intended for supine use and derived actionable innovation and access priorities. METHODS: We searched Espacenet (EPO), WIPO PATENTSCOPE, the USPTO database, Google Patents, and INVENES for January 2000-September 2025. Records were screened for functional r

Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation versus sham stimulation for the treatment of catheter-related bladder discomfort in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate: a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD), characterized by urinary urgency, frequency, and suprapubic pain, is a clinically significant complication following transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Current CRBD pharmacotherapy faces inherent limitations due to adverse effect profiles. Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS), a noninvasive neuromodulation therapy with demonstrated efficacy in bladder dysfunction management, shows particular promise as a safe and effective alternative for CRBD treatment. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-

Steps toward recovery-peri-operative step count as an objective Enhanced Recovery After Surgery implementation metric after gynecologic cancer surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery pathways have improved post-operative outcomes in gynecologic oncology, yet recovery trajectories vary widely. Objective measures of post-operative mobilization, such as daily step count, may serve as reliable indicators of functional recovery, but their impact remains unclear. This study evaluated the relationship between peri-operative step counts and post-operative outcomes while accounting for established clinical and surgical recovery factors. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of patients undergoing gynecologic cancer surgery at a single terti

Retrospective evaluation of clinical performance of three measurement catheter fixation methods in urodynamic studies.

BACKGROUND: Catheter displacement during urodynamic studies remains a common challenge, potentially introducing artifacts, compromising test accuracy, and decreasing patient comfort. Despite the clinical significance of stable catheter fixation, evidence-based recommendations for optimal fixation techniques are lacking. This study seeks to address this gap by comparing the effectiveness and patient comfort associated with three commonly used catheter fixation methods during urodynamic study. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from non-randomized patients who underwent urodynamic studi

Do all patients need a urethral catheter after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy?

To evaluate the safety and early functional outcomes of a urethral catheter-free protocol during extraperitoneal single-site robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (essRARP), enabled by suprapubic catheter (SPC) drainage placed through the existing incision, compared with urethral catheter (UC) drainage. We retrospectively analysed 217 consecutive men undergoing essRARP (June 2023-July 2025) at a single institution. Patients received either a urethral catheter-free protocol with SPC drainage (SPC/UC-free, n = 129) or UC drainage (UC, n = 88). In the SPC/UC-free group, after vesicourethral anasto

Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Pediatric Urethral Catheterization: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Urethral catheterization is the standard method for obtaining sterile urine in nontoilet-trained children, but the conventional blind technique frequently results in futile attempts ("dry taps") on empty bladders. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) offers the clinical advantage of confirming adequate urine volume to prevent mucosal trauma and procedural distress. However, its routine implementation may be limited by operator training requirements and potential workflow delays while waiting for bladder filling. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the efficacy of real-time POCUS-ass

Effect of ultrasound-guided anterior sacral plexus block on catheter-related bladder discomfort after transurethral prostate surgery: protocol for a single-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at a tertiary hospital in China.

INTRODUCTION: Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) is a common and distressing complication after transurethral prostate surgery (TUPS). Many patients experience moderate to severe symptoms, which may delay recovery and reduce patient satisfaction. Currently, there are no standardised expert consensus statements or international guidelines for CRBD management. The ultrasound-guided anterior approach of sacral plexus block (anterior SPB) is a novel regional anaesthesia technique that may reduce CRBD through effects on multiple neural pathways. This trial is designed to evaluate the effica

Same-surgeon vs separate-surgeon prophylactic ureteral catheterization in colectomy and proctectomy: a national retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic ureteral catheterization (PUC) facilitates ureteral identification during colorectal surgery, but little is known about the outcomes when catheterization is performed by the index colorectal surgeon rather than by a separate surgeon. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program targeted colectomy and proctectomy data between 2012 and 2024. Adult patients undergoing colectomy and proctectomy with PUC were classified according to whether PUC was performed by the index surgeon (IS-

Congenital Diarrhea: A Case Report on Challenges in Both Prenatal and Postnatal Diagnosis.

Prenatal recognition of congenital diarrhea and subsequent diagnosis can facilitate neonatal monitoring and prompt initiation of lifesaving postnatal treatment. We describe two cases with a congenital diarrheal disorder (CDD), highlighting the prenatal course and the diagnostic process. In cases of fetal dilated bowel loops, particularly with a characteristic honeycomb appearance, prenatal genetic testing for CDDs should be considered. After birth, distinguishing diarrhea from urine may be challenging in neonates with suspected congenital diarrhea. Therefore, urinary catheterization or a urine

A Case of Urinary Tract Infection Resulting From Voiding Dysfunction Caused by Sacral Herpes Zoster Involving the Left Buttock.

Herpes zoster-associated voiding dysfunction is an uncommon complication but may occur when the sacral dermatomes are involved. In immunocompromised patients, including kidney transplant recipients receiving immunosuppressive therapy, urinary retention may predispose patients to secondary urinary tract infections such as pyelonephritis. Prompt recognition and appropriate management are therefore essential. We report the case of a woman with a history of living-donor kidney transplantation who developed urinary retention and pyelonephritis following herpes zoster involving the buttock. She had

Genomics reveal Staphylococcus aureus persists during long-term urinary catheterization despite antimicrobial therapy and catheter exchanges.

Urinary catheters, the most frequently placed medical devices in the US, increase the risk of developing symptomatic catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) - the presence of bacteria in the urine - with those requiring long-term urinary catheters (LTUCs) at highest risk. While ASB and CAUTI are caused by a broad range of uropathogens, most remain understudied. We use whole-genome sequencing to investigate the understudied uropathogen, Staphylococcus aureus. Analysis of 153 longitudinal S. aureus isolates previously collected from urinary catheter
